(Cl. d-479) The invention relates to a combination edge turning and vulcanizing die and refers more particularly to apparatus for folding cover material of trim panels over the edge of the foundation board of the trim panel and for holding the cover material in `assembly with the foundation board while the cover material is ysecured to the foundation board electronically.
It is `an object of the invention to provide an improved combination edge turning and vulcanizing die.
Another object is to provide a combination edge turning and vulcanizing die lfor use lwith electronic Sealing apparatus.
Another object is to provide a combination edge turning and vulcanizing die for use in securing the cover m-arterial of a trim p-anel to the foundation board thereof which die includes means for embossing the surface of the trim panel.
More specifically -it is an object to provide a combination edge turning and vulc-anizing die comprising a die base including means for resiliently supporting cover material for a trim panel, a die lid for positioning a trim panel foundation board on the cover material and pressing the foundation board and cover material `against the resilient support therefor, said die including means for folding the cover material against the edge of the foundation board `vvhen the foundation board 'and cover material Iare pressed `against the resilient support therefor, and glide block and sliding plate means for folding the cover material against the surface of the foundation board remote from the die base While the foundation Iboard and cover material are pressed `against the resilient support therefor and for holding Ithe cover material and foundation board in assembly while they are secured together.
Another object is to provide a combination edge turning `and vulcanizing die las set forth above wherein said die lid and the sliding plates of the guide block and sliding plate means are resiliently supported for movement toward or away from the die base.
Another object is to provide a `combination edge turning and vulcauizing die as set forth above wherein said die lid and the sliding plates of the guide block and the sliding plate means are insulated from the die base to facilitate electronic sealing of the cover material to the foundation board of a trim panel held in said die.
Another object is to provide a combination edge turning and vulcanizing die 'as set forth above wherein said die base comprises a substantially flat base plate, a bonding rule secured to said base plate, said bonding rule extending perpendicularly outwardly from said 'base plate and being in configuration of an edge seal between the cover material rand foundation board of a trim panel which it is desired to produce therewith, -a turning rule for folding the cover material into engagement with the edge of being positioned adjacent the bonding rule and outwardly with respect to a trim panel positioned on the bonding rule, said turning rule extending outwardly from .the die base a distance greater than the bonding rule, and resi-lient supporting material positioned on the base plate within the area defined by the bonding rule.
Another object is to provide 1a combination edge turning rand v-ulcanizing die las set forth above wherein the die lid comprises la substantially llat plate liingedly secured to the die base at one side thereof on a resilient mounting for pivotal movement and for movement perpendicular with respect to the die base, said die lid including means for locating a foundation board relative to the die base.
Another object is to provide -a combination edge turning Land vuleanizing die as set forth above wherein the guide block and `sliding plate means comprises guide blocks secured to said die base adjacent said turning rule and sliding plates mounted on said guide blocks for movement parallel to the base plate which sliding plates on movement toward the bonding rule are operable to turn the edge of cover material positioned between the die base and die lid into engagement with the surface of tbe foundation `board remote from the die base.
Another object is to provide a combination edge rturning *and vuloanizing die as set forth |above which is simple in structure, economical to manufacture and efficient in use.

FIGURE 2 is a section view of the combination edge turning and vulcanizing die illustrated in FIGURE 1 taken on the line 2-2 in FIGURE 1.
FiGURE 3 is a diagrammatic representation of the combination edge turning and vulcanizing die illustrated in FIGURE 1 in combination with a press and means for producing an alternating electrical signal between the press platens.
FIGURES 4 and 5, and FIGURE 6 are section views of the combination edge turning and vulcanizing die of the invention taken on the lines 4-4 and 6 6` respectively in FIGURE l and showing the die lid and sliding plates in progressive edge folding positions.
With particular reference to the figures, one embodiment of the invention will now be disclosed.
As shown in FIGURE l the edge turning and vulcanizing die 10 of the invention comprises a die base l2, a die lid 14 and a plurality of guide block and sliding plate means 16. Said die lid 14 and guide block and sliding plate means 16 are secured to the die base 12 as shown.
In the embodiment of the invention shown cover material 18 for a trim panel of an automobile or the like and bonding material Ztl are positioned on the die base 12. A foundation board 22 for the trim panel is positioned on the open die lid 14. The die lid is then closed to position the foundation board on the cover material and fold the cover material into engagement With the edge 24 of the foundation board. The cover material is next folded into engagement with the side 26 of the foundation board remote from die base 12 by the guide block and sliding plate means 16. Subsequently the die 1t) is placed in a press and the cover material is secured to the foundation board electronically.
More specifically the die base 12 as shown best in FIGURES l and Z comprises a dat base plate Z8 which -is rectangular in outline and has secured thereto the angle shaped bonding rule 30. Bonding rule Sil is formed in the configuration of the seal it is desired to produce between the cover material 18 and foundation board 22. of a trim panel as shown best in FIGURE l. The connection between the base plate 28 and the bonding rule 30 is an `electrical connection.
The die base 16 further includes the turning rule 32 secured to the bonding rule 30 by convenient means, such 3. Structure as claimed in claim l wherein said sliding plate means is resiliently mounted in guide block means for movement perpendicular to said die base.
4. Structure as claimed in claim 1 and further including `other bonding rules secured to said base plate operable to emboss a trim panel positioned within said die during sealing of the cover material.
5. A die for folding cover material around the edge of a foundation board to form a trim panel and for holding the cover material and foundation board in assembly while the cover material is electronically bonded to the foundation board, comprising a die base including a base plate of electrically conductive material and a bonding rule of electrically conductive material extending from said base plate, said bonding rule being formed to contact the periphery of a trim panel positioned within said die, said die base also including a turning rule of insulating material extending from said base plate adjacent said bonding rule, said turning rule being formed in the configuration of the edge of the foundation board around which the cover material is to be folded, said bonding rule being spaced inwardly from said turning rule with respect to a trim panel positioned in said die, and die lid means operably associated with said die base and insulated electrically therefrom for pressing the foundation board into engagement with the cover material, said turning rule cooperating with the edge of the foundation board during pressing of the foundation board into engagement with the cover material to fold the cover material into engagement with the edge of the foundation board, and guide block ,and Sliding plate means electrically insulated from said die base also operably associated with said die base for folding the cover material into engagement with the surface of the foundation board remote from the die base and for holding the folded cover material during electronic sealing of the cover material to the foundation board.

A die for folding cover material around the edge of a foundation board to form a trim panel and for holding the cover material and foundation board in assembly while the cover material is electronically bonded to the foundation board, comprising -a die base including a base plate of electrically conductive material and a bonding rule of electrically conductive material extending from said base plate, said bonding rule being formed to contact the periphery of a trim panel positioned Within said die, said die base also including a turning rule of insulating material extending from said base plate adjacent said bonding rule, said turning rule being formed in the configuration of the edge of the foundation board around which the cover material is to be folded, said turning rule extending perpendicularly from the base plate a greater distance than said bonding rule, and die lid means operably associated with said die base and insulated electrically therefrom for pressing the foundation board into engagement with the cover material, said turning rule cooperating with the edge of the foundation board during pressing of the foundation board into engagement with the cover material to fold the cover material into engagement with the edge of the foundation board, and guide block and sliding plate means electrically insulated from said die base also operably associated with said die base for folding the cover material into engagement with the surface of the foundation board remote from the die base and for holding the folded cover material during electronic sealing of the cover material to the foundation board.

A die for folding cover material around the edge of a foundation board to form a trim panel and for holding the cover material and foundation board in assembly while the cover material is electronically bonded to the foundation board, comprising a die base including a base plate of electrically conductive material and a bonding rule of electrically conductive material extending perpendicularly from, secured to, and making electrical contact with said base plate, said bonding rule being formed to contact the periphery of a trim panel positioned within said die, said die base also including a turning rule of insulating material extending perpendicularly from said base plate adjacent said bonding rule, said turning rule being formed in the configuration of the edge of the foundation board around which the cover material is to be folded, and resilient insulating supporting means within the area defined by the bonding rule for receiving the covering material thereon, die lid means operably 4associated with said die base and insulated electrically therefrom for pressing the foundation board in engagement with the cover material against the resilient supporting means to compress said resilient supporting means, said turning rule cooperating with the edge of the foundation board during compressing cf the resilient supporting means to fold the cover material into engagement with the edge of the foundation board, and guide block and sliding plate means electrically insulated from said die base also operably associated with said die base for folding the cover material into engagement with the surface of the foundation board remote from the die base and for holding the folded cover material during electronic sealing of the cover material to the foundation board.

A die for folding cover material around the edge of a foundation board to form a trim panel and for holding the cover material and foundation board in 'assembly while the cover material is electronically bonded to the foundation board, comprising a die base including a base plate of electrically conductive material and a bonding rule of electrically conductive material eX- tending perpendicularly from, secured to, and making electrical contact With said base plate, said bonding rule being formed to contact the periphery of a trim panel positioned within said die, said die base also including a turning rule of electrically insulating material extending perpendicularly from said base plate adjacent said bonding rule, said turning rule being formed in the configuration of the edge of the foundation board around which the cover material is to be folded, said bonding rule being spaced inwardly from said turning rule with respect to a trim panel positioned in Said die, and resilient insulating `supporting means within the area defined by the bonding rule for receiving the covering material thereon, die lid means operably associated with said die base and insulated electrically therefrom for pressing the foundation board against the resilient supporting means to compress said resilient supporting means, said turning rule cooperating with the edge of the foundation board during compressing of the resilient Supporting means to fold the cover material into engagement with the edge of the foundation board, and guide block and sliding plate means electrically insulated from said die base also operably associated with said die base for folding the cover material into engagement with the surface of the foundation board remote from the die base and for holding the folded cover material during electronic sealing of the cover material to the foundation board.

A ldie for folding cover material around the edge of a -foundation board to form a trim panel and for holding the cover material and foundation board in `assembly while the cover material is electronically bonded to the foundation board, comprising a die base including a base plate of electrically conductive material `and a bonding rule of electrically conductive material extending perpendicularly from, secured t0, and making electrical contact with said base plate, said bonding rule being formed to contact the periphery of a trim panel positioned within said die, said die base also including a turning rule of insulating material extending perpendicularly from said base plate adjacent said bonding rule, said turning rule being formed in the configuration of the edge of the foundation board around which the cover material is to be folded, said turning rule extending pe-rpend-icularly from the base plate a greater distance than said sonatas@ i bonding rule, and resilient insulating supporting means within the area defined by the bonding rule for receiving the covering material thereon, die lid means operably associated with said die base and insulated electrically therefrom for pressing the foundation board in engagement with the cover material against the resilient supporting means to compress said resilient supporting means, said turning rule cooperating with the edge of the foundation board during compressing of the resilient supporting means to fold the cover material into engagement with the edge of the foundation board, and guide block and sliding plate means electrically insulated from said die base also operably associated with said die base for folding the cover material into engagement with the n Ci surface of the foundation board remote from the die base and for holding the folded cover material during electronic sealing of the cover material to the `foundation board.

A DIE FOR FOLDING COVER MATERIAL AROUND THE EDGE OF A FOUNDATION BOARD TO FORM A TRIM PANEL AND FOR HOLDING THE COVER MATERIAL AND FOUNDATION BOARD IN ASSEMBLY WHILE THE COVER MATERIAL IS ELECTRONICALLY BONDED TO THE FOUNDATION BOARD, COMPRISING A DIE BASE INCLUDING A BASE PLATE OF ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE MATERIAL AND A BONDING RULE OF ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE MATERIAL EXTENDING FROM SAID BASE PLATE, SAID BONDING RULE BEING FORMED TO CONTACT THE PERIPHERY OF A TRIM PANEL POSITIONED WITHIN SAID DIE, SAID DIE BASE ALSO INCLUDING A TURNING RULE OF INSULATING MATERIAL EXTENDING FROM SAID BASE PLATE ADJACENT SAID BONDING RULE, SAID TURNING RULE BEING FORMED IN THE CONFIGURATION OF THE EDGE OF THE FOUNDATION BOARD AROUND WHICH THE COVER MATERIAL IS TO BE FOLDED, AND DIE LID MEANS OPERABLY ASSOCIATED WITH SAID DIE BASE AND INSULATED ELECTRICALLY THEREFROM FOR PRESSING THE FOUNDATION BOARD INTO ENGAGEMENT WITH THE COVER MATERIAL, SAID TURNING RULE CO-
