WALL MAP. No. 308,627. Patented Dec. 2, 1884.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE A. POOLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WALL-MAP.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,627, dated December 2, 1884-.
Application led April 12, 1884. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, ff may concer/1,:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. POOLE, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Chi cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Maps, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and-in which is repre sented the back side of a map according to my invention.
As heretofore constructed, maps printed upon paper have either been provided with muslin backs or they have been simply sheets of paper nailed directly to the stick aud roller. In the iirst-named construction the map maybe attached to its stick with considerable firmness; but the objections to such maps are the greatly-increased stiffness of the map to roll up `and handle, increased bulk, weight, and cost, and in the latter constructiomwhere stiffness, weight, and cost are reduced to a minimum, and, therefore, in those respects most desirable, the paper is too weak to. make a desirable article without a cloth backing. In order, therefore, to attain the desirable qualities of both kinds, I construct my maps as follows, viz: Upon the back, and across its upper or upper and lower ends, I paste or glue a strip of stout muslin, a a', so as to form a solid backing to that part of the map covering the stick, or stick and roller, or either,
and through this, either with or without the usual strip of narrow tape, Inail the map to the stick, or stick and roller, andthereby attain all the rmness at this part that is obtained from a inap backed wholly with muslin. Upon each vertical edge are pasted strips b, which may lap under or over the strip or strips a a, and are with it tacked to the stick,
or stick and roller, or between two halves of a roller, as shown.
In maps so constructed the map is as rmly secured to its mountings as if wholly backed with muslin, while it has all the advantages of the lightness and flexibility of a paper map, and is of about equally cheap construction.
What I claim isl. A map provided with a musliu strip, a, cemented to its upper edge over the back of its stick, substantially as specified. Y
2. A map provided with musliu strip a, cemented to its back over the back of its stick, and overlapping strips Z), united together to its stick, substantially as specified.
3. A inap provided with muslin strips a, cemented to its upper edge over the back of its stick, strips c', cemented to its lower edge, and s'trips b and split roller c, substantially as specified. r
GEO. A; POOLE.
