BROOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,396, datedN'ovemberZS, 1884.
I Application filed February 1, 18 84, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER A. YOERGENSEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Maplewood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in brooms.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby the handle may be readily detached from the broom for shipping or other purposes; and to that end it consists of the novel devices and combination of devices, as will be described and claimed.
Reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section; and Fig. 2, a section on line 1 1 of Fig. 1,.
Like letters refer to like parts in each view.
A represents the broom, to which is secured by wires, in the usual way, a rod, B, which forms part of the handle. A cap, 0, is placed over the joint formed between the broom and rod B, and thoroughly protects the parts. A divided collar, D, is placed around the protruding end of rod B, and secured thereto by means of pins a, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2. The divided collarD is screw-threaded on its outer surface, and upon it is screwed a collar, E, which, when in position, rests at its lower end in cap 0 and holds said cap in place. Collar E is of suffi cient length to extend a suitable distance above the upperend of rod B, and into said collar the lower screw-threaded end of the detachable handle F is inserted.
By the arrangement and construction of the parts as described a simple attachment is formed for connecting the broom and handle, and one which renders the handle detachable, and at the same time gives additional protection to the weakest part of the broomviz., at the joint formed between the broom and handle.
By the use of a detachable handle the parts can be packed for shipping in a much smaller space than now, and are less liable to breakage.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, with broom A, provided with rod B, of divided screw-threaded collar D, screw-threaded collar E, and screwthreaded handle F, the parts arranged as described and shown.
2. The combination, with broom A, provided with rod B, of cap 0, divided screwthreaded collar D, screw-threaded collar E, and screw-threaded handle F, the parts arranged as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' PETER A. YOERGENSEN. Witnesses:
M. J. GLAGETT, LoUIs NoL'rINe.
