To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, JOHN D. COLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenwood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Cleaning Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gun-cleaning devices; and the object of my improvements is to provide a device of the character stated comprising a swab, a swabholder, and a stem having two sections connected with each other by a swivel-joint, thereby permitting the swab when drawn through the bore of a rifled gun-barrel. by means of a cleaning-rod to follow the rifles and rotate independently of the cleaning-rod.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my gun-cleaning device, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view of the stem of same.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A and B represent the two sections of the stem, which have their adjacent ends connected With each other at a by a swivel-joint, so as to permit the said sections to rotate independently of each other. In the outer end of the section A there is formed a screwthreaded bore a to receive the end of a cleaning-rod a In the outer end of the section B there is formed a bore b,'in which there is secured the end of a swab-holder'O, comprising two wires twisted together in the manner shown and having the bristles D secured therebetween and extending laterally therefrom and providing a swab for cleaning gunbores. The swab-holder and the section B may be composed of a single piece of mate rial, especially so if a removable swab, such as cotton, cloth, or the like, is to be applied to the holder in place of the bristles. Furthermore, section A'and the cleaning-rod may be a single piece of material.
To clean a gun-bore with my cleaning device, the latter is first mounted on a cleaning-rod by screwing the latter into the opening a in the stem. The swab is then passed back and forth through the gun-bore by means of the cleaning-rod.
-The especial advantage of my device is that the swiveljoint in the stem permits the swab, whether of bristles or other material, to rotate independently of the cleaning-rod, and thus permit it to follow the rifles or grooves formed in the walls of the bore instead of crossing them, and thereby completely remove all powder-smoke, &c., from the bottom of the rifles as well as from the main or visible wall of the bore.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, a stem comprising a section B, and a section A, said section B, having at one end a swabholder and provided at its opposite end with a bore encompassed by a rim, said section A, being provided at one end with means for connecting it with a cleaning-rod and having its opposite end provided with an annular groove and inserted in the said bore in section B, the said rim of the latter section being shrunk to fit the said annular groove on section A, said sections being non-separable and independently rotatable.
2. In a device of the character described, a stem comprising a section B, having its outer end adapted to hold a swab, and provided at its opposite or inner end with a longitudinal bore encompassed by a rim; and a section A, having its outer end adapted to be connected with a cleaning-rod, and having its opposite or inner end inserted in said bore in section B, and provided near its inner end with an annular shoulder engaged by the said rim on section B, and having an annular groove located between said shoulder and its inner end, an annular portion of said rim being shrunk to form an inwardly-extending annular rib rotatably fitting said annular groove in section A.
