Description

April 2, 63 H. M. ADLER 3,083,380
MATTRESSES Filed Dec. 26, 1961 FIG. 2
INVENTOR HARRY M. ADLER I TTORN EYS United States Patent 3,083,380 MATTRESSES Harry M. Adler, 421 Whitney Ave, Hamilton, Untario, Canada Filed Dec. 26, 1961, Ser. No. 161,338 2 Claims. (Cl. -345) My invention relates to improvements in mattresses and the object of the invention is to provide a mattress arranged for combination with a supporting member therefor; wherein such combination and arrangement pro vides a mattress having a central portion furnishing a substantially firm support for the heaviest part of the body of a person lying thereon, the upper and lower end portions of the mattress supporting the head and limbs being soft in relation to its central portion.
The foregoing object is achieved by providing a flat top mattress of standard thickness at its end portions and formed with a reduced thickness central portion for support of the heaviest part of the body and defined by a transverse channel having a flat top face and extending from side to side of the under central portion of the mattress; the supporting member upon which the mattress rests being formed with a fiat top platform rib of the same size and shape as the mattress channel to be received therein and supporting of the thinner central portion of the mattress.
With the foregoing and other objectives in view, as shall be apparent as the specification proceeds, my invention consists of a mattress and supporting member therefor constructed and arranged all as hereinafter more particularly described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is an expanded perspective view of the mattress and its supporting member, and
FIG. 2 a side view, partly in section of the mattress resting upon its supporting member.
The mattress 2 is provided in any of the standard sizes and is preferably of standard uniform thickness in its head and end portions.
The bottom portion of the mattress is formed with a recess or transverse channel 3 extending from side to side of the mattress and having a flat top face 4, the channel being positioned inter-mediately of the length of the mattress to define in its width at substantially firm portion 5 for support of the heaviest part of the body of a person lying upon the mattress. The lower and upper limbs and head supporting portions 6 and 7 of the mattress are of any desired softness.
The mattress supporting member may be of any desired construction, either rigid or semi-rigid, and in the drawing I have shown it comprising a flat top hollow box-like structure 8, if necessary, suitably reinforced, as by ribs 9, and formed of any suitable material such as moulded hard plastic or plywood. The member is of substantially the same length and width as the mattress it supports and is formed upon its top face with a flat top transverse platform rib 10 of the same size and shape and in the same position as the mattress channel 3 to sungly lit 3,083,380 Patented Apr. 2, 1963 therein upon the mattress being positioned upon the supporting member, as shown in FIG. 2.
The mattress may be of any desired construction, containing coiled springs, foam rubber or the like, or a combination of springs and rubber. In FIG. 2 I have shown a coil spring mattress wherein the springs '12 in the limbs and head supporting portions are of standard length and desired resiliency, the springs 13' in the central portion 5 being shorter and stiffer and thus providing firm support for the heaviest part of the body. In the case of a foam rubber filled mattress the reduced depth of rubber in the portion 5 provides desired firm support.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have invented a very substantial improvement in mattress construction in providing properly predetermined firm support in the portion of the mattress where it is needed; where today very many people in an endeavour to overcome the support inadequacies of standard mattress and box or web spring combinations insert boards between their mattresses and supporting springs in a not very satisfactory effort to reduce body distortion with its resultant spine and pelvic ailments.
Although I have described and illustrated a preferred construction and arrangement of my invention it is to be understood that I may make any desired modifications or alterations therein, such as having the channel 3 and rib 10 shorter than the width of the mattress, without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A resilient mattress for support of the body of a person lying thereon in any natural position, the mattress being of uniform thickness at its end portions for support of the head and lower limbs of the body of a person lying upon the mattress, a recess in the bottom face of the mattress and having a flat inner face and located intermediately of the length of the mattress and forming a reduced thickness portion of the mattress for support of the area between the shoulders and hips of the body of a person lying upon the mattress, a rigid flat top supporting member of substantiall the same area as the mattress and upon which the mattress rests, and a rigid flat top rib protruding from the top of the supporting member for reception within the recess, the rib being of the same dimensions as the recess and supporting the reduced thickness portion of the mattress above the recess.
2. A mattress as defined in claim 1, wherein the recess in the mattress is a channel extending transversely from side edge to side edge of the bottom face of the mattress, the rib extesding transversely from side edge to side edge of the mattress supporting member.
