Filed June 5, 1961, Ser. No. 114,706 1 Claim. (Cl. 145-34) This invention concerns an improved hacksaw. According to the invention there is provided a hacksaw frame which is generally L-shaped in structure. Slidably fitted on one arm of the frame is a slotted support for a hacksaw blade holder. On the other arm of the hacksaw is a slotted ring adapted to engage a holder member for the blade. The slotted support and slotted ring permit the blade to be mounted in various angular positions in the frame. The blade holder is adapted to serve as handle so that the blade assembled therein can be used as an independent cutting tool away from the hacksaw frame.
It is therefore one object of the invention to provide a hacksaw frame with perpendicularly disposed arms, one arm being provided with a slotted ring adapted to engage a holder of a hacksaw.
Another object is to provide a hacksaw having an L- shaped frame with perpendicularly disposed arms, one arm being provided with a slotted ring adjustably engaging a holder member of a saw blade, a support for another blade holder member slidably and adjustably mounted on the other arm of the frame, the support having another slotted ring, and another holder member for the saw blade, adjustably mounted in the other slotted ring.
Still another object is to provide a hacksaw including a holder for a hacksaw blade adapted to mount adjustably in a support on a hacksaw frame, and further adapted to serve as a handle for the blade used as cutting tool independent of the frame.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a hacksaw embodying the invention, parts being broken away;
FIG. 2 is a front end elevational view of the hacksaw.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the hacksaw frame and support for the blade holder, parts being broken away;
FIG. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the hacksaw blade and blade holder members, parts being broken away.
FIG. 5 is a side elevational view of the hacksaw blade and holder.
FIG. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 66 of FIG. 1.
Referring to FIGS. 1-6, there is shown a hacksaw 10 including a frame 12 having mutually perpendicular short arm 14 and long arm 16. The arms are ruled with linear measuring scales 18, 20 to increase the utility of the frame which can serve as an L-square independently of the hacksaw. Arm 14 has a ring 22 formed integral therewith at its free end. This ring is formed with a plurality of angularly disposed radial slots 24.
Slidably mounted on the longer arm 16 is a bifurcated member 25. This member has an upper tubular portion 26 which fits slidably on the arm 16. The portion 26 and arm 25 may be rectangular in cross section to prevent turning of the portion 26 on the arm. Outer leg 28 of member 25 extends angularly to the arm and axis of portion 26 and serves as a handle for the hacksaw. Inner leg 30 of member 25 extends at an acute angle to leg 28 and is formed with a ring 32 at its free end. This ring is provided with angular radial slots 35 aligned with cor-' responding slots 24 in ring 22. Another ring 36 is formed at the free end of leg 28. Rings 22, 32 and 36 are all axially aligned. A thumb screw 29 is threaded in the underside of portion 26 between legs 28, 30 and bears on the underside of arm 16 for holding the member 25 in any selected position along the arm as shown in FIGS. 1, 6.
The holder for blade 40 in the hacksaw consists of two holder members 42, 44. Holder member 42 as shown best in FIGS. 1, 2, 4 and 5 has a cylindrical body 45 with central slot 37 through which the flat, elongated blade 40' may be inserted. A threaded hole 41 is formed in body 45. A set screw 48 may be threaded in hole 41 for engaging the blade. If desired holes '50 may be provided in the blade to be engaged by the set screw 48. Keys 52 are formed on the body 45 at one end at diametrally opposed positions to engage in slots 24 of ring 22.
FIGS. 1 and 6 show the assembly of frame, blade and and holder members. Screw 29 permits the member 25 to be adjustably positioned and set along arm 16. The holder members secure the blade 40 in the frame. The engagement of the keys '52 and 56 in selected slots of rings 22 and 32 determine the angular disposition of the plane of blade 40 with respect to the plane of the frame 12. The holder member 44 is axially disposed in rings 32 and 36 and held there by nut 60. Tightening of nut 60 forces the keys 56 tighter into slots 35. Movement of member 25 on arm 16 toward the free end of the arm forces the keys 52 tighter in slots 24. Tightening of screw 29 sets the position of member 25 and secures the holder member 42 in the ring 24.
FIG. 5 shows the saw blade 40 mounted in holder member 44 only. In this arrangement the assembly of blade and holder member may serve as a cutting saw independently of the hacksaw frame.
The entire assembly is characterized by simplicity of construction which enables fabrication at low cost by mass production and manufacturing methods. The structure is rugged in structure, long lasting and is adaptable to a wide range of uses for cutting, measuring, etc.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise contruction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1s:
A hacksaw, comprising an L-shaped frame with two mutually perpendicular arms, one of said arms having a ring integrally formed at a free end thereof, said ring having radial slots circumferentially spaced in one face of the ring, a bifurcated member mounted on the frame, said member having a tubular portion slidably received on the other arm, screw means carried by said tubular portion for selectively fixing the member along the other arm, said member having two angularly disposed legs, one of said legs serving as a handle for the hacksaw, the other of said legs having another ring on a free end thereof axially aligned with the first named ring, said other ring having other radial slots circumferentially spaced in one face of the other ring and aligned with corresponding slots in the first named ring, and a third ring integral with said one leg at the free end thereof and axially aligned with the first and second rings, a holder member for a blade, said holder member having a cylindrical body axially disposed in the first named ring, said holder member having at least one radially extending key at one end thereof engaged in a slot in the first named ring, a second holder member for a blade, said second holder member having another cylindrical body axially disposed in the other ring, said second holder member having at least one radially extending other key at one end thereof engaged in a slot in the other ring, said other cylindrical body having a threaded other end, and a nut threaded on said threaded other end and bearing on the third ring, each of the holder members being axially slotted from end to end whereby a saw blade may extend through each ends References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 138,362 Baggs Apr. 29, 1873 1,419,819 Chiddix June 13, 1922 FOREIGN PATENTS 58,957 Switzerland Feb. 23, 1912 490,126 Italy Feb. 6, 1954 142,623 Great Britain May 13, 1920
