IMPLEMENT FOR ATTACHING BUTTONS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,999, dated November 11, 1884.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JosErH A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deep River, in the countyof Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements for Attaching Buttons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a plan view.

This invention has relation to improvements in needles for attaching buttons; and it consists in the novel construction, of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and

particularly pointed out in the claim appended.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates the flattened body of the needle, and b the point thereof. From the point to the shoulder c the width of the needle gradually increases, the blade at the shoulder being wide enough to form a passage for the button eye. The shoulder c is concave, and from its back portion extends a loop from arm d, which is recurved toward the front of the shoulder, its termination 6 being convex in form and parallel to the front of the concave shoulder, from which it is separated by an interval or passage, 9, the breadth of which is sufficient to admit the eye of a button. The width of the loop portion (2 of the needle is less than that of the blade at the shoulder, so that said shoulder forms a guard for the loop and prevents it from catching in the cloth or leather when in operation.

In using this instrument the button-eye is passed on the loop (1, and the blade is then carried through the cloth or leather until the eye of the button is drawn through in proper position. The instrument is then disengaged from the button-eye and a fastening applied thereto. This needle is provided with cutting-edge projections z z, for cutting a wide passage through the leather or cloth.

I am aware that a needle has been constructed with the end of the finger or free side of the eye having an enlargement made beveling each way from its highest point, so that the thread may be slipped in and out of the eye with equal facility, and also that it is not new to provide a needle having the end of the loop turned over to form alap-joint, whereby the thread may be inserted without passing the end through the eye in the ordinary manner, and therefore do not claim either of them, broadly; but,
