The present invention relates broadly to a holder for a roll of paper, and more specifically to a novel and improved holder for a conventional roll of toilet tissue.
In the greater majority of holders devised heretofore for supporting rolls of toilet tissue wherein only one end of the holder is to be secured to or mounted upon a support a closing cap or plate is detachably connected to the other or free end of the holder. The closure cap or plate is customarily of a size to enclose or extend beyond the tube or core upon which the paper is wound so as to insure the retention of the roll of paper on the holder. In instances where a closure cap is not utilized it has been found expedient to employ resilient or spring actuated members mounted on the holder so as to engage the tube or core of the paper roll and thus insure its retention upon the holder during the operation of removing or unwinding the paper from the roll.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a holder for a roll of toilet tissue having a spindle or mandrel with a closure cap formed integrally therewith for retaining the roll of paper thereon.
Another object is to provide a toilet tissue holder having a spindle with an attaching base member formed integrally with one end thereof and a roll retaining member formed integrally with the other end for supporting therebetween a roll of paper.
A further object is to provide a toilet tissue holder having a spindle with an enlarged end portion whereby a roll of paper may be slidably positioned upon the spindle and retained thereon .by said end portion during normal operation thereof.
Still further objects are to provide a holder for a roll of toilet tissue which is attractive in appearance, economical of manufacture and which is efficient and durable in use.
Other objects and advantages, more or less ancillary to the foregoing in the manner in which all of the various objects are realized will appear in the following description which when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, sets forth the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated:
FIGURE 1 is an elevational view of the holder of the present invention with a suction mounting cup secured to one end and a portion of a roll of toilet tissue supported thereon;
FIGURE 2 is an elevational view of the holder per se with portions thereof broken away;
FIGURE 3 is an elevational view of a suction cup mounting means with a threaded projection for engagement with an end of the holder;
FIGURE 4 is an end view of the holder shown in FIGURE 2, illustrating another way in which the holder may be secured to a supporting surface;
FIGURE 5 is an elevational view showing a roll of toilet tissue, mounted on the holder shown in FIGURE 2;

3,@'i,999 Patented Feb. 26, 1963 Referring to the drawings there is shown in FIGURE 2 a holder for a roll of toilet tissue, comprising a mandrel or spindle 10 which is of an elongated cylindrical configuration. The mandrel 10 has formed integrally therewith at one end thereof an enlarged annular flange or base 12 which is provided with a plurality of equi-distant marginally arranged holes 14, FIGURE 4, to facilitate the mounting or securing of the holder to a suitable surface such as wall. The mandrel it? may be formed from wood, plastic or any other suitable material and is preferably hollow throughout its length in order to produce a structure that is relatively light in weight but still durable.
The flanged or base end portion of the holder is provided on the interior hollow surface with a plurality of grooves or threads 16 which are designed to engage and coact with complementary projections or threads 13 formed on the end of a stud 20 which projects outwardly from a suction cup member 22. Thus the mandrel 10 may be secured to the suction cup by screw threading the flanged end 12 upon the stud 20 so that the holder may then be supported upon any suitable surface by means of the suction cup 22.
The mandrel It) is provided on its free end or the end opposite the annular flange 12 with an enlarged protuberance or knob 24 which may be formed integrally with the mandrel or formed as a separate hollow part which can then be secured thereto in any suitable manner such as by a press fit. The portion of the mandrel 10 intermediate the flange 12 and the knob 24 is of a diameter commensurate with the diameter of a conventional hollow core 26 upon which a roll of toilet tissue is customarily wound. While the diameter of the mandrel 10 is just slightly less than the diameter of the core 26 the diameter of the enlarged protuberance or knob 24 is, throughout the major portion of its length, just slightly less than the diameter of the core 26 so that the core will have a sliding engagement therewith as the roll of tissue paper is being placed upon the mandrel 10. The knob 24 throughout the major or greater portion of its length is of a uniform and constant diameter so as to provide in comparison with its overall length, a substantially large area which is adapted to have a substantially sliding engagement with the core 26 when a roll of paper is being placed upon the mandrel it The outer or free end 28 of the knob 24 is beveled or reduced in cross sectional area so as to slope or be inclined towards the longitudinal axis of the mandrel 10 to facilitate the entry of the knob into the core 26 when placing a roll of paper upon the holder.
A shown in FIGURE 5 a roll of toilet tissue is mounted upon a holder of the type illustrated in FIGURE 2 whereby the base or flange portion 12 may be secured to a suitable surface. In FIGURES 6 through 8 there is shown an angle bracket composed of leg portions or members 30 and 32 wherein the member 3t may be fastened to a suitable supporting surface and the member 3-2 is provided with a threaded stud or projection 34 to which the flanged end portion 12 of the mandrel It is secured. In the form of holder illustrated in FIG- URES 6 to 8 the mandrel it and roll of tissue paper are disposed in a plane that is parallel to the plane of the surface to which the leg member 38 is secured.
In the use or operation of the holder of the present invention the mandrel 10 may be secured to or mounted upon a suitable surface or support by securing the flange portion 12 thereto or by utilizing the suction cup 22 or the bracket member composed of the parts 30 and 32. Regardless of which type of mounting is employed the roll of tissue paper is mounted upon the mandrel 10 by sliding the core 26 over the knob 24 until the entire core and roll of paper is supported on the mandrel. Inasmuch as the mandrel is slightly smaller than the core 3 26 the upper portion of the core and roll of paper will rest upon the mandrel with the core then being positioned against the knob 24 and below its upper surface. This positioning of the core and roll of paper will besubstantially maintained at all times as when paper is being removed from the roll the size of mandrel with respect to the size of the core, diameter Wise that is, will tend to restrict or limit the movement of the core and roll of paper with respect to the mandrel. In other words, the diameters of the respective parts is such as to materially reduce and restrict the movement of the core away from the mandrel even when the core is being rotated about the mandrel so that a segment of the cadet the core is always in abutting engagement with the knob 2-4 which insures the retention of the roll of paper on the mandrel.
Although the foregoing description is necessarily of a detailed character, in order that the invention may be completely set forth, it is to be understood that the specific terminology is not intended to be restrictive or confining, and that various rearrangements of 'parts and modificat-ions of detail may be resorted to without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as herein claimed.
I claim:
1. A holder for a roll of tissue paper which has a central opening therein defined by a core member, comprising an elongated hollow cylindrical mandrel of uniform diameter throughout and having a smooth andcontinuous outer peripheral surface, said mandrel being of a length greater than the length of the coremember, the inner diameter of said core member beinggreater than the outer diameter of said mandrel to permit friction free movement of said core member upon said mandrel, an annular flange formed integrally at one end of said mandrel and being of a greater cross sectional area than said mandrel, said mandrel having a plurality of internal annular grooves formed therein and terminating at said annular flange, a studnhaving means thereon for securing same to a wall, said stud having annular projections formed thereon engageable with the annular grooves in said mandrel, an annular protuberance formed on the free end of said mandrel, the outer surface of said protuberance throughout the greater portion of its length having a maximum diameter slightly less than the diameter of said core member with the remaining portion of the outer surface of said protuberance being inclined towards the longitudinal axis of said mandrel to facilitate the insertion of the mandrel into the core member and the positioning of said core member upon said mandrel between said end portion and protuberance.
2. A holder of the type as defined in claim 1 wherein the means on said stud comprises a suction cup for securing the holder to a supporting surface.
3. A holder of the type as defined in claim 1 wherein said means on said stud comprises a bracket including a pair of legs with one of said legs securing the holder to a supporting surface.

A HOLDER FOR A ROLL OF TISSUE PAPER WHICH HAS A CENTRAL OPENING THEREIN DEFINED BY A CORE MEMBER, COMPRISING AN ELONGATED HOLLOW CYLINDRICAL MANDREL OF UNIFORM DIAMETER THROUGHOUT AND HAVING A SMOOTH AND CONTINUOUS OUTER PERIPHERAL SURFACE, SAID MANDREL BEING OF A LENGTH GREATER THAN THE LENGTH OF THE CORE MEMBER, THE INNER DIAMETER OF SAID CORE MEMBER BEING GREATER THAN THE OUTER DIAMETER OF SAID MANDREL TO PERMIT FRICTION FREE MOVEMENT OF SAID CORE MEMBER UPON SAID MANDREL, AN ANNULAR FLANGE FORMED INTEGRALLY AT ONE END OF SAID MANDREL AND BEING OF A GREATER CROSS SECTIONAL AREA THAN SAID MANDREL, SAID MANDREL HAVING A PLURALITY OF INTERNAL ANNULAR GROOVES FORMED THEREIN AND TERMINATING AT SAID ANNULAR FLANGE, A STUD HAVING MEANS THEREON FOR SECURING SAME TO A WALL, SAID STUD HAVING ANNULAR PROJECTIONS FORMED THEREON ENGAGEABLE WITH THE ANNULAR GROOVES IN SAID MANDREL, AN ANNULAR PROTUBERANCE FORMED ON THE FREE END OF SAID MANDREL, THE OUTER SURFACE OF SAID PROTUBERANCE THROUGHOUT THE GREATER PORTION OF ITS LENGTH HAVING A MAXIMUM DIAMETER SLIGHTLY LESS THAN THE DIAMETER OF SAID CORE MEMBER WITH THE REMAINING PORTION OF THE OUTER SURFACE OF SAID PROTUBERANCE BEING INCLINED TOWARDS THE LONGITUDINAL AXIS OF SAID MANDREL TO FACILITATE THE INSERTION OF THE MANDREL INTO THE CORE MEMBER AND THE POSITIONING OF SAID CORE MEMBER UPON SAID MANDREL BETWEEN SAID END PORTION AND PROTUBERANCE.
