CARI-COUPLING.
SEPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,704, dated November 4, 1884.-.
Application filed`A|lgust 1, 1884.
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM CoNs'rAN'rlNn Bear., a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Fernandina, in the county of Nassau and State of Florida, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Car- Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art.- to which it appertains, to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to so-called automatic car-couplings or self-couplers of that class in which a coupling-pin is used which is raised automatically by the insertion of the link and dropped through the link after the end of this has passed the lower end of the pin; and my improvement consists 'in the detailed construction and combination of parts, which will behereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan View of my improved car-coupling.
A Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same with the link in the act of passing under the pin-elevating lever, and Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the link in its coupled position.
In the embodiment of my invention I employ, in connection with the drawhead A and coupling-pin B, a curved lever, (l. Said lever is pivoted upon a pin, a, in an opening, b, in the upper part, near the front or ilaied open end of the draw-head A, said opening being overhung by a rearwardly and upwardly curved chambered or hollow casting or horn, c, the function of which will be referred to farther on. The lever C is formed at its lower forward end with a beak, or, in other words, it is sharply curved or convexed upon its outer or exterior surface rearwardly or inwardly at said end, being also tapered toward its said extremity and normally resting upon the bot tom of the draw-head chamber thereat, where by it is adapted to readily yield to the action of the link as the latter is brought into contact therewith in effecting the coupling oper-- (No model.)
ation'. The upper or outer end of said lever normally rests upon the top of the draw-head, the same as before stated, projecting through an opening in the draw-head, while from its said end extends in the direction of its length a slot, d, through which passes the couplingpiu B, also passing through and guided by an aperture, e, in the upper end of the horn or casting c in addition to passing in the usual manner through an aperture in the upper part and an aperture in the bottom ofthe draw-head. The slot d is ot' such length that it will permit the outer end of the lever C to describe the required arc in its ascent as the lower end of said lever is acted upon by the entering link to effect the elevation of the pin B to the required height, said pin being reduced or provided with shoulders f and g, one above and the other below said lever, which, by projecting sidewise over or overlapping the slot d. admit of limited play or motion between the slotted end of the lever and the pin, so that the latter will always maintain its vertical position without tilting as the slotted end of the lever strikes the upper shoulder, j', in raising the pin. After the end of the lilik has passed the lower end of the pin, the latter will drop into position to couple with the link independent of lever C, the reduced part of the pin between its shoulders giving sufficient play for this purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the draw-head A, hav ing the rearwardly-curved horn or casting c, provided with aperture c, eouplingpin B, having a reduced part forming shoulders lf and g, and curved lever G, having a slot, (I, at its rear end coniined between the shoulders or offsets on the pin, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I cla-im the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM O. BEAL.
