This invention relates to safety razors and particularly to those safety razors which are meant to be of a disposable nature.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved safety razor.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved safety razor wherein the razor blade is permanently in place in the body of the razor.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved safety razor wherein the razor blade is incorporated within the construction of the razor body when the latter is cast of suitable material such as plastic.
Another and further object of the invention is the provision of a safety razor utilizing a half portion of a regular double-edge razor blade by casting two razor bodies around one blade and breaking the double-edge razor in two along weakened lines near the ends of the blade, so that when finished, there will be one half a two-edge razor in each of two razor bodies.
Another and still further object of the invention is the provision of a safety razor blade with a smoorh bar on the approach side of the body of the razor adjacent the blade itself and having a support for the middle of the bar and being cut away to permit unobstructed approach to the blade.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of an improved safety razor having holes in the top and bottom of the body portion made by registration of pins or other projections which hold the blades in position while the casting of the body portion takes place.
A still further object of the invention is the casting, simultaneously of two razor bodies about a double edge safety razor blade in such a manner that when the casting is completed, the blades may be readily severed in two pieces, leaving a half blade in each razor body with its cutting edge in position to function properly.
Still another and further object of the invention is the provision of an improved razor cast with a slightly tapered handle integral with the body of the safety razor, the handle having a tapered hollow interior.

In carrying out this invention, each of two bodies of lee two safety razors are cast around one half of a whole safety razor blade and after being fabricated in pairs, the razor bodies, held together by the whole razor blade, are broken apart, severing the razor blade at its ends or other weak parts, thus forming two complete razor bodies, each including the half blade about which it has been molded.
Referring in detail to the drawing, a handle IS is provided for handling and control of the safety razor. This handle is hollow as shown in FIGURE 9 to reduce the amount of plastic or other material from which it is made and also to cause a more nearly uniform thickness to be obtained throughout the body ofthe razor.
On the upper end of the handle 1S is the razor body portion i6, which is here illustrated as being integral with the handle 15. In FIGURES 3, 4 and 5, the underside of the body member I6 is shown as having an indentation with a rim I7 on three sides, the front, and two ends to provide for the rigidity of the razor body as a whole.
In the top orV face-contacting portion of the body portion and in the upper relatively large surface of the indentation in the body portion (see FIGS. 3 and 5) are oppositely placed holes Ida and Ib spaced opposite each other in pairs, and the spaces are caused by spacing pins 1619 and I'c (FIG. l0) which retain the proper relative position of the safety razor blade I8 in the body space of the mold while the body portions of the pair of razors are being cast. The pins lob and 17e are each four in number and also are shown as being placed with some of the pins Mb and l'c out of a straight line. These pins leb and I7c together with the heads 19a (FIGS. 7 and 9) which extend between the two body members l5, and which are on the upper ends of the sliding pins 19, act to hold the razor blade in proper registration during the time the blades are being loaded prior to casting. Special attention is invited to the arrangement of these pins Ib and I7c which are preferably out of alignment. This bends the blade as well as holds it in proper relative position in order that the cutting edges of the two parts of the blade are in proper relation to the cooperating body parts, thus insuring that the cutting edges will be in the proper positions to perform the beard-cutting function in a satisfactory and predetermined manner. These pins Idb and 17e and parts I9, i951 are not a part of this invention, per se.
In the form. of razor blade which I use, the cutting edge does not exten-d out the full length of the blade. As shown on FIG. 7, the cutting edge stops short of the length of the blade and there are provided four spaces caused by the cutaway corners ISC (FIG. 7) which allow for the provision of a guard portion on the body member of the razor which I have designated 17x which permits the passage of the razor over the skin of the user without injuring the skin. These guards are mere rounded points located in the spaces ISC when the razor blade is incorporated in the razor structure.
The blade I8, as preferably used, is similar in general construction and outline to the ordinary two-edge blade for use in the ordinary safety razor. It is provided with two cutting edges, a long opening lm on its long center line which opening extends to within a short distance of the ends of the blade. At the ends of this opening Itm, there are two narrow connecting portions which I provide with weakened lines Iy as clearly shown on FIGS. 7 and 8. These weakened lines provide for a place where the two-edge razor blade may be broken in half to form the two blades of the separated razors after they have been cast, as is clear from FIGS. 6 and 9.
rl`he action of the out-of-line arrangement of the adjusting pins ib, E70, assures a pressing downwardly by the upper pins, lob and a pressing upwardly by the 3 lower pins, 37e on the upper and lower `sides of the razor blade 1S. And since there are two sets or" pins leb and 17C for each half of a complete safety razor blade, and since they are-all set so as to press their respective surfaces ot the razor blade, thus holding the blade in proper position, the proper placing of the blade is assured.
At the front of the safety razor body, 16, there is a forward rail 2t? which forms a part of the rim 17 and extends the full length of the cutting blade.
The upper edge of this rail Ztl is rounded for proper contact with the skin of the user. Its position with relation to the cutting edge of the blade is such that it will permit the skin of the user to be closely contacted by the blade but will prevent undue pressure of the cutting edge in a manner to cut the skin. As already pointed out, .the ends of the safety razor blade are protected from cutting the users skin by the guards 17x in the same manner that the edge 2id protects the skin of the user throughout the length of the cutting edge. At the center, adjacent Ithe edge 2? is a bridge member 21 which strengthens the middle of the edge 2t) and prevents the forward central portion of the rim 17 from bending. See FG. 4.
in the manufacture of this safety razor, the whole blade is prefer-ably placed over the head or edge 19a, in position on one part of the mold, not shown, so as to be in position to have the pins 1Gb, 17C hold the blade when the mold forms are closed. When this is done, "the separating lin lg, at the upper edge of which is the head or edge 19a, extends between the positions of the ltwo back faces of the pair of body portions and extends upwardly and through the opening 18m between the halves or" the razor blade to hold it from sliding as the blade` becomes held by the pins 1619, 17C. As the mold is closed with the pins lab, 17C and the tin 19a, all in operation, the razor blade is held in its proper place for the casting of the plastic or other material used for making the body portions 16.
After the casting has taken place, it is obvious that there will be two complete safety razor bodies, 16, each body enclosing one half of the blade.
The handles of the two razors are tapered outside and inside to facilitate removal from the mould. The handle openings in the mold are provided with cores which extend into the handles. These handles and their cores are removed after the casting operation.
rl'he two bodies of the razors are held together by the weakened portions ly shown in detail in FIG. 8. By pulling apart on the lower ends of the handles, as they are shown in FIG. 9, the two razor bodies will break apart, which completes the manufacturing process.
ln the manufacture ot this razor, the parts of the mold are so closely placed that it is impossible for any ot the plastic or other material of which the bodies are made, to get to the cutting edges of the blade and avoids the necessity of clearing away the material after manufacture.
While I have illustrated and described an embodiment of my invention in detail, it is to be understood that the disclosure is merely illustrative and that modications :and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and within its scope as claimed.
Having described my invention, a razor, what l claim l. A safety razor construction comprising, in combination,
(a) a two-edge razor blade of a commercial type, the blade having a cut away portion on its center line along the long axis, leaving weakened connecting portions holding the two halves of the blade together,
(b) said razor construction having a pair of complete razor body portions,
(c) each of said body portions having a half of the said two-edge blade embedded therein, and each enclosing that part of the razor blade away from Ithe cutting edge, the two body portions being separated along the cutaway portion of the razor blade and being separable from each other adjacent the weakened portion of the blade, for separating the two bodies and the blade halves from each other,
(d) a guard means adjacent the cutting edge of each half blade to protect the skin of the user.
2. A safety razor construction comprising in combination,
(a) a two-edge blade of a commercial type, the blade having a cut away portion on its .center line along the long axis, leaving weakened connecting portions holding the two halves of the blade together,
(Zi) said two-edge blade having oppositely extend-ing cutting edges,
(c) .said safety razor construction having a pair of ,complete razor body portions, each enclosing that part .of .the razor blade away from the cutting edge, the two body portions being separated along the cutaway portion of the razor blade and being separalble' from each other adjacent the weakened portion of the blade, for separating the two bodies and the bladehalves from each other, l g
(d) each of the body portions having a half of the said two-blade embedded therein and {e) a guard means on each body portion to protect the skin of the user against being cut.
3. A safety razor construction comprising in combination,
(n) a two-edge blade of a commercial type, the blade having a cutaway portion on its center line along tthe long axis, leaving weakened connecting portions 'holding .the two halves ot the blade together,
(b) said safety razor construction having a pair of complete razor body portions,
(c) each of the body portions having a half of the .said two-edge blade embedded therein, and each enclosing that part of the razor blade away from the cutting blade edge, the two body portions being separated along the cutaway portion of the razor .blade and being separable from each other adjacent the weakened portion' of the blade, for separating the two bodies and the blade halves from each other,
(d) a guard means adjacent the cutting edge of each half blade to protect the skin of the user against injury and (e) integral parallel handles, one extending from each body portion.
4. A safety razor construction comprising in combination,
(a) la two-edge razor blade of a commercial type, ,the blade having a cut away portion on its center line along the long axis, leaving weakened connecting portions holding the two halves of the blade together,
(b) said razor construction having a pair of complete razor body portions,
(c) each of the body portions having a half of the said two-edge blade embedded therein, and each `enclosing .that part of the razor blade away from the cutting blade edge, the two body portions being separated along the cutaway portion of the razor blade and being separable from each other adjacent the weakened portion of the blade, for separating the two bodies and the blade halves from each other, v
(d) a guard means adjacent' the cutting edge of each half blade to protect the skin of the user against injury, and
(e) the two halves of the blade being in planes and at an angular relation to each other.
5. A safety razor construction comprising in combination,
(a) a two-edge razor blade of a `commercial type, the blade having a c ut away portion on its center line along the long axis, leaving weakened connecting portions holding the t-wo halves of the blade together,
(b) said razor construction having a pair of complete razor body portions, each with a respective handle,
(c) each of said body portions having a half of said two-edge blade embedded therein, and each enclosing that part of the razor blade away from the cutting blade edge, the .two body portions being separated along the cutaway portion of the razor blade and being separable from each other adjacent the weakened portion of the blade, for separating the two bodies and .the blade halves from each other,
(d) a guard means .on each body portion to protect the -skin .of the user `against injury 'and (e) :the halves of the razor blade lin each body portion being in respective planes at a predetermined angle to each other and (f) each blade half having a predetermined ,angle relative to its respective handle.
6. A safety razor construction comprising in combination,
(a) la .twoedge razor blade of a commercial type, the -blade having a cut away portion on its center line along the long axis, leaving weakened connecting portions holding the two halves of the blade together,
(b) said razor construction having a pair of complete razor bodies,
(c) each of said bodies having a half of the said two-edge blade embedded therein, and each enclos- Iing that part of the razor blade away from the cutting blade edge, the two body portions being separated along the cutaway portion of the razor blade and .bein-g separable form each other adjacent the weakened portion yoi the blade, for separating the two bodies and the blade halves from each other,
(d) a guard means adjacent the cutting edge of each half blade to protect the skin of the user, and
(e) la connecting bridge between the guard means and main portion of the body member of each razor to provide stability between the bodys main portion and the guard means.

Claims (1)

1. A SAFETY RAZOR CONSTRUCTION COMPRISING, IN COMBINATION, (A) A TWO-EDGE RAZOR BLADE OF A COMMERCIAL TYPE, THE BLADE HAVING A CUT AWAY PORTION ON ITS CENTER LINE ALONG THE LONG AXIS, LEAVING WEAKENED CONNECTING PORTIONS HOLDING THE TWO HALVES OF THE BLADE TOGETHER, (B) SAID RAZOR CONSTRUCTION HAVING A PAIR OF COMPLETE RAZOR BODY PORTIONS, (C) EACH OF SAID BODY PORTIONS HAVING A HALF OF THE SAID TWO-EDGE BLADE EMBEDDED THEREIN, AND EACH ENCLOSING THAT PART OF THE RAZOR BLADE AWAY FROM THE CUTTING EDGE, THE TWO BODY PORTIONS BEING SEPARATED ALONG THE CUTAWAY PORTION OF THE RAZOR BLADE AND BEING SEPARABLE FROM EACH OTHER ADJACENT THE WEAKENED PORTION OF THE BLADE, FOR SEPARATING THE TWO BODIES AND THE BLADE HALVES FROM EACH OTHER, (D) A GUARD MEANS ADJACENT THE CUTTING EDGE OF EACH HALF BLADE TO PROTECT THE SKIN OF THE USER.
