This invention relates to safety razors, and more particularly to a razor of the Gillette type which may be readily cleaned after shaving without taking it apart.

The objects of the invention are to provide a safety razor of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, ornamental in appearance, and very efilcient and durable in use.

With these and other objects in view there have been illustrated on the accompanying drawing two forms in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.

In the use of safety razors in the past, one of the most serious objections has been the necessity of taking the razor completely apart for cleaning it after each shave. lVith the introduction of the modern rustless steel blade, attempts have been made to clean the razor by merely unscrewing the handle part way and flushing the soap and hair therefrom by dipping it in hot water.

It has been found, however, when cleaning the razor by the above method, that it was necessary to hold the guard and razor blade to prevent them from twisting around during the washing operation. There was con- 1930. Serial No. 469,468.

sequently considerable danger of injury to the users fingers from the sharp blade.

By means of the present invention the above and other disadvantages have been avoided. This has been accomplished by providing a razor having means for automatically holding the guard and blade while washing and rinsing without any possibility of having them twist out of position, thereby not only shortening the time of the shaving operation, but also reducing the danger of injury to the fingers of the shaver. Moreover, since it is unnecessary to separate the parts of the razor, all danger of dropping the handle into the sink or drain pipe is avoided.

Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the first form of the invention is illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4. In this form of safety razor the numeral 10 indicates the handle member having knurled

11 and 12, respectively, for convenience in manipulation. The handle 10 has a reduced lower section 13 provided with a threaded socket 14 adapted to screw upon a threaded post 15 extending upwardly from a cap member 16.

The cap member 16 has upstanding lugs 17 at its four corners for fitting into the corresponding four angular recesses in the corners of the blade, not shown, for holding the latter accurately in position. By means of this construction, when the handle 10 is screwed down upon the post 15, the blade will be firmly held between the cap 16 and a guard member 18. The cap member 16 is also provided with a pair of alined longitudinal ribs 19 extending on opposite sides of the threaded post 15, and has a pair of opposed relatively short alined transverse ribs 20 located at rightangles to the ribs 19. The guard member 18 is provided with a rectangular substantially convex base and has two parallel rows of transverse teeth 21 in its opposite side edges, between which provision is made of five parallel grooves 2-2, 109

23 and 25 serve as channels to facilitate the washing away of the soap and hair from the cap, blade and guard after shaving. The

23 and 25 also serve to reduce the amount of capillary attraction between the blade and the guard member 18, avoiding the difficulty formerly present with this type of razor in which the guard had a flat bottom surface to which the blade was likely to adhere. The guard member 18 is 'also provided with a circular aperture 27 in its center adapted to fit loosely over the unthreaded lower section 28 of the post 15. The guard member 18 is further provided with an upwardly projecting knurled sleeve 29 adapted to loosely fit around the handle socket 14 for permitting the guard member,

to be manipulated without grasping the ends thereof.

A pair of transverse grooves 30 are also provided in the under surface of the guard member for a purpose to be later described. Operation In operation, when the user is through shaving and desires to clean the razor, it will be only necessary for him to grasp the ends of the cap 16 in one hand and twist the handle 10 with the other sufficientl to perinit the guard member 18 to be rotated degrees with respect to the cap. This latter operation is accomplished by shifting the fingers down the handle 10 upon the knurled sleeve 29 and rotating the latter until the pair of alined grooves 30 of the guard member snap over the transverse ribs 20. The handle 10 may then be screwed down upon the post 15 for holding the parts firmly during the washing and rinsing operation. The excess water may then be removed by shaking the razor sharply without permitting th parts to twist about.

The modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is identical in all respects with the first form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4 except that instead of employing transverse and longitudinal ribs on the cap member for cooperating with the trans verse grooves 30 on the guard member, a square boss 31 is provided on the cap member 32 at the base of the post 32a, and a pair of short upstanding pins 33 are provided near the ends ofsaid cap. The boss 31 is adapted to fit within a square socket 34 in the central aperture of the guard member 35, and the pins 33 are adapted to fit within a pair of. alined sockets 36 in the base of said guard member 35.

The blade to be used with this form of razor and which is shown in Fig. 8 has apertures shaped to fit about the boss 31 and pins 33 respectively.

The operation of thisform of device is exactly similar to that of the first form described above.

While there have been disclosed in this specification two forms in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limitedto the specific disclosures but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the'scope of the following claims.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:

1. In a safety razor, a cap member, a guard member, a handle having means for engaging said cap member to hold a' blade tightly between said cap member and guard member, and means on said cap member interfitting with said guard member to positively hold said guard member against rotation when twisted 90 degrees from shaving position.

2. In a safety razor, a cap member having a threaded post, a guard-member having an aperture fitted around said post, a handle having a threaded lower socket to screw upon said post, and cooperating interfitting means on said cap and guard members to positively hold said guard member in a cleaning and rinsing position at an angle to the shaving position.

3. In a safety razor, a cap member having a threaded post, a guard member having a central upstanding sleeve loosely surrounding said post, a handle having a lower thread ed socket to screw upon said post within sa1d sleeve, and cooperating interfitting means on said cap and guard members to positively hold said guard member in a cleaning and rinsing position at an angle to the shaving position.

4. In a safety razor, a cap member having a threaded post, a guard member having a central upstanding sleeve loosely surrounding said post, a handle. having a lower threaded socket to screw upon said post within said sleeve, said cap member having longitudinal ribs, said guard member having longitudinal grooves to fit said ribs to hold sa1d guard in shaving position, said guard member also having transverse grooves to fit sa1d ribs and hold said guard in cleaning and rinsing position.

5. In a safety razor, a cap member having a threaded post, a guard member having a central upstanding sleeve loosely surrounding said post, a handle having a lower threaded socket to screw upon said post within sa1d sleeve, and said cap member having transverse and longitudinal ribs, said guard mem ber having -longitudinal grooves to fit said longitudinal ribs to hold said guard in shaving position, said guard member also having transverse grooves to fit said longitudinal ribs and hold said guard in cleaning and rinsing position.

6.- In a safety razor, a cap member, a guard 'member having a central groove, a handle adjustably connected with said cap member to hold a blade between said cap and guard members, and a plurality of parallel longitudinal grooves in the base of said guard member on each side of said central groove for facilitating the cleaning of the razor and for reducing the capillary attraction between the guard and blade, said cap member having a longitudinal rib to fit into said central roove.

7. n a safety razor, a cap-member, a guard member having a central groove, a handle adjustably connected with said cap member to hold a blade between said capand guard members, and a plurality of longitudinal grooves in the base of said guard member on each side of said central groove for facilitating the cleaning of the razor and for reducing the capillary attraction between the guard and blade, said cap member having a longitudinal rib to fit into said central groove.

8. In a safety razor, a cap member, a guard member having a central groove, a handle adjustably connected with said cap member to hold a blade between said cap and guard members, and a pair of parallel longitudinal grooves in the base of said guard member on each side of said central groove for facilitating the cleaning of the razor and for reducing the capillary attraction between the guard and blade, said cap member having a longitudinal rib to fit into said central groove.
