MA H/M ATTORNEY Dec. 4, 1962 w. G. MccRossEN DOUBLE LINE DERRICKS 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed March 13, 1961 INVENTOR Wmunm 6. Ma denied Arron/5y United States Patent 3,066,804 DOUBLE LINE DERRICKS William G. McCrossen, 6550 W. Forest Home Ave., West Allis 14, Wis. Filed Mar. 13, 1961, Ser. No. 95,105 1 Claim. (Cl. 212--55) This invention relates to improvements in derricks, and more particularly to a novel derrick of the double line type.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the type having a conventional lift cable, and a second cable operated by the relative movement of the free end telescoping elements.
Another object of the invention is to provide a derrick which will be especially efficient in turning and other handling of loads to be carried. I
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side view in elevation of a derrick embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a view taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a view taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a view taken on line 44 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a detail view partly in elevation and partly in section of the free end of the device.
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary plan view of the outer end of the derrick showing the conventional cable.
FIG. 7 is a fragmentary plan view of the outer free end of the device showing the engagement of the auxiliary cable.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 refers to the largest and main beam of a derrick receiving the telescoping median beam 11 and the telescopic outer end beam 12. In practice, it is often necessary to handle a load 13 with two lines or cables 14 and 15, and in the present device, the separate ma- 3,066,804 Patented Dec. 4, I962 nipulation of the lines 14 and 15 is very conveniently effected.
As shown in FIG. 1, the main line 14, connected with a power Windlass (not shown) passes over pulley 17, top pulley 18 on outer end beam 12, and the end pulley 19 to terminate in hook 20 engaged with hitch 21.
The secondary line 15 is fastened by means of the binding at 23 to the member 24, thence passing around the pulley 25 back to and around pulley 26 up under the pulley 27 and over the top pulley 28 to terminate in the hook 29 engaged in the hitch 30.
It will be apparent that the operator of the derrick can shorten or lengthen the free end of the secondary line 15 by telescoping movement of the outer end beam 12 within the median beam 11.
It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
In a derrick, a main beam, a plurality of telescoping beams slidably retained thereon, pulley means on said beams, a main cable operable over said pulley means for attachment to a load to be lifted, and a secondary cable for attachment to a load which may be held on the main cable, said secondary cable being anchored to one telescoping beam and alternately connected by a series of pulleys to that and a beam engaged with it whereby relative movement of said beams will shorten or lengthen the secondary cable to lift or lower a load with or without the main cable.
