WITNESSEb: INVENTOR.

HORACE L. I-IEATON, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF. ONE-HALF TO FRANK WOODBRIDGE, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,334, dated October 7. 1884.
Application filed February 15, 1884.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE L. HEATON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved sash lock or holder. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, showing its interior construction and arrangement. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a slightly-modified construction, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as applied to the windowcasing.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of sash locks or holders which are actuated by gravity, in eontradistinction of those in which the catch bolt or look is actuated bya spring; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of parts of the improved sashlock of that class, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
. In the accompanying drawings, A denotes a metallic box having screwholes a for its attachment, either to the stile of the windowsash or to the window-casing, the lock being equally well adapted to be used upon the sash and fixed casing. Inserted transversely through the lower part of the box is a bolt, F, the projecting outer end, F, of which engages the stops S, while its inner end is reduced, as shown atf. The sides of the box A have two apertures, b and 0, one of which is of such a size that it will fit and guide the projecting outer end, F, of the bolt, while the opposite aperture 0, is only large enough for the insertion of the reduced end f of the bolt. The body F of the latter is constructed with a notched projection, K, adapted to engage the lip H of the finger-lift or. lever G, the outer end, G, of which projects through a slot, (1, in one side of the box. The finger-lift G H is (No model.)
hung upon a stud, D, which projects inwardly from box A, and may either be cast in one piece therewith or inserted into it from the outside. it
If desired, box A may be provided with a fixed finger-rest, as shown at G in Fig. 3, and the projecting outer end, G, of the finger-lift should be weighted, so as to be snfficiently heavy to force the enlarged end of bolt F out through the aperture b. Instead of making the parts f and F of the sliding bolt in one piece, they may be made in two separate parts, and the reduced part f screwed into the part F, as shown in Fig. 3. \Vhere this construction is adopted the part f may be provided with a head or stop, f, so that by screwing the part f farther into or out of F the projecting end F of the bolt may be regulated in length according to the distance between the sliding sash and the fixed casing, or according to the width of the stops with which the bolt engages. Substantially the same result may be accomplished by constructing the part K with a series of notches or recesses adapted to engage the lip of the fingerlift, so that by shifting the lip H of the lift from one of the notches to another the outer end of the bolt may be made to project more or less, as circumstances require.
Having thus described my invent-ion, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the box A, the bolt consisting of the body F, having notched projection K and projecting outer end, F, the guide piece f, screwed into the rear end of bolt F, and provided with the lip or stopf at its projecting outer end, and the finger-lift or lever G, constructed with the lip H, adapted to en gage the notched part K of the bolt, and having the projecting weighted finger-piece G, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE HEAION.
