JOHN Z. \VALLING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DENTISTS FILE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,298, dated October '7, 1884:.
Application filed March 28, 1884. (N0 model.) i
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN Z. WALLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Dentists File, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to file-holders for vet-, erinary dentistry; and it consists of a holder.
.in which the file is set by a side adjustment and a set-screw, and the objects of my invention are to protect the mouth of the animal while using said file, and to facilitate an easy I accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my holder with file detached. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my holder with the file attached. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my invention and file.
In the practice of equine dentistry the files used have been open to the following objections, viz: XVhen the edges of the file were exposed, the animal would become restive, owing to the injury accompanying the use of said file. When the files were adjusted by side bars or slots, the side adjustment (which is very beneficial, for reasons to be shown here inafter) was entirely 10st, and in this holder the file is more expensive onaccount of the cost of beveling the longer end. I obviate these difficulties byplacing the file on the holder, which has suitable recess to receive it from one side, the other side forming a guard for the tongue or gum, as shown in drawings, Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A is the handle, provided with the holder B, having the shoulders O O grooved under to receive the beveled edge of the file D, as shown in drawings, and the rear piece or guard, E. Dis double file, having the ends beveled, as shown in drawings, and held in place by the set-screw F.
In the use of my invention the following is to be observed: The instrument is placed in the mouth of the animal, having the guard in ward toward the tongue and the file resting on the crown of the tooth, when, as will be seen, the instrument may be operated'without danger 0f irritating the animal by rasping his tongue with the edge of the file.
In the use of the instrument shown in Fig. 2 the file will be placed on the side of the -tooth,with the guard resting against the gum,
JOHN Z. \VALLING.
