Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVENDER ELLIS, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,570, dated November 6, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLVENDER ELLIS, of New Britain, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVashing-Machinos; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawings; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the drawings, in which theA same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of this improvement consists in the combination of a perforated, toothed, or corrugated plate, fitted to, and turning upon a fixed shaft or spindle, secured in the center of the bottom of atub, and having a toothed or corrugated conical revolving cylinder', the shaft of which is secured in boxes, one on the center shaft of the tub, and the other on a shaft secured on the side of the tub, and a pressure is produced on the two ends of the cylinder shaft boxes, by means of springs which hold the conical cylinder closely to the revolving plate, and so that it will yield to the unequal thickness of clothes passing through between the cylinder and the perforated, toothed or corrugated plate, which is held in a horizontal position by a friction wheel, secured to the tub, the under side, and near the outer edge of the said plate, and directly underneath the shaft of the conical cylinder g. Thus when the suds are put into the tub in a proper quantity, and the clothes (about to be washed are laced on the revolvinO P e plate, motion is given to the conical cylinder, and by the action thereof, the clothes are caused to change their position continually, while at the same time the dirt is being worked out of them, and deposited below the said plate, on the bottoni Aof the tub.
In the accompanying drawings, a is the tub.
o, is a fixed shaft or spindle secured in the center of the bottom of the tub a, by means of a iange hub c.
CZ is a revolving plate, having a hub flange e, secured thereto, and is fitted to the spindle b, on which it (the plate d) revolves, and nearly lls the inside circumference of the tub a. a free passage from or into the cavity f, be tween the plate CZ and the bottom of the tub.
The upper side of the plate is toothed or orrugated so as to produce a working surace.
g, is a conical shaped cylinder provided with teeth or corrugations to work in combination with the surface of the plate d. Said cylinder is secured on a shaft 7L, one end of which takes its bearing in the box z', on the spindle b. The other end takes its bearing in the box y', on the spindle Z, which is secured to the side of the tub. The springs la on the spindles o, and Z, are provided, to allow the cylinder g, to adjust itself to the clothes passing between their surfaces. l
m is a friction roll secured directly underneath the plate and cylinder g, for the purpose of keeping the plate d in a horizontal position with the tub.
a is a crank by which the machine is operated.
Now in using this machine a suitable amount of suds is first placed in the tub, so that the clothes laid upon the plate d shall be thoroughly saturated when motion is given to the cylinder and plate by means of the crank n, producing a continuous movement of the clothes and action of the plate and cylinder thereon, which eii'ectually removes the dirt from the clothes, with less hard labor, while the dirt removed is deposited in the cavity f below, and by this arrangement I am enabled to produce a cheaper and more durable machine which will only occupy the room of a common tub.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ism The combination of the conical cylinder g, with the revolving plate al, arranged within a tub a, having the adjustable features described, arranged and operating together for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I- have hereunto set my hand and aiiixed my seal this 18th day of July 1860.
