Be it known that I, JACOB M. CRULL, of more of these tags may be used upon each Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Return RegisteringEnvelope, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to provide an envelope that may be used over and over again, the envelope being more especially intended for use by express companies for valuable packages, and in the postal service for transmitting registered letters and packages through the mails.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank used in making my new and improved envelope. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the complete envelope with two tags. Fig. 3 showsin plan a single and double tag and one of the double washers or shields with key-holesh aped openings, and Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the envelope taken upon the line 00 m of Fig. 2.

The blank A is formed with the side flaps a a, end flap, b, and back flap, c, which latter is of the same size as the face portion (1 of the envelope, and may be provided with the side flaps c, to be folded in upon the part c, for the purpose of strengthening the envelope at the edges. The flap c is provided near its free end with the headed metal pin or stud e, which is held in place by the shield f, pasted over the head a" of the pin or stud, as shown clearly in Fig. at. envelope, according to the use for which the envelope is intended. 'mitting registered matter through the mails, two tags will be used, as shown in Fig. 2, one of the tags being adapted to have the regular address of the package written upon it, the other to have the names of the postal clerks, route -agents, and postmasters through whose hands the package passes registered upon it, instead of upon the body of the envelope, as is now the practice, thus providing entirely against defacing the body of the envelope by writing. p

Instead of using single or separate tags 13, as shown in Fig. 2, the double folded reversible tags B (shown in Fig. 3) might be used, both sides of the tags being adapted for writ ingsurfaces.

The tags 13 or B are to be placed upon the pin or stud c after the envelope has been closed by bringing the flap 7) down and placing it upon the stud e. The washer g 1/ is then to then the key h is to be put in place upon the pin or stud, and over this key sealing-wax may then be placed, which effectually seals the envelope and secures the tags B.

The washer g 9 might be plain separate washers; but I prefer to make them double, as shown in Fig. 3, and to form each part of the double washer with the peculiar key-shaped opening 9 f, which, when the parts g of the washer are folded together, stand opposite to each other-that is,with the larger portions 5' i of the openings pointing in opposite directions. The smaller portions t" z" of the keyshaped openings y stand near the center of the parts g r of the washer, and coincide with each other when the parts 1/ of the washer are folded together, and these smaller portions of the keyshaped openings are made of a size to just fit around the reduced portion 6 of the stud or pin awhile the larger portions 6 i of the said openings are made of a size to readily pass g ver the head c of the said stud or pin 0. The other part, 9, of the washer will then be placed over the head 6 of the stud e, the part c of which will stand in the reduced portion 2" of the key-shaped opening, and thus, together with the part and head 6 furnish a lock for the tags B B and for the flap I), as will be understood from Fig. 4.

An envelope made in the manner described is cheap, and by means of the removable tags B or B it may be used over and over again by simply removing the tags B B and supplying new tags with each use.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the envelope-flap c, of the pin or stud 0, having channel a, op- 20 posite heads e" e at its opposite ends, the washers g, and the key h, whereby the flaps and tags may be held, as shown and described.

2. The combination,with an envelope-blank, A, provided with a face portion, (1, having 25 perforated side flaps a, perforated end flap, b, and back flap, 0, provided with stud e, of the tags B B, secured to said stud, substantially as shown and described.

3. The envelope A,having the stud 6, formed 0 with the head 6', in coinbination'with-the tags B or B and double washer g 9, having keyshaped openings,substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
