COMBINED TAG BROOKLYN, NEW' YORK:
AND ENVELOPE.l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Reissued Letters Patent No. 10,488, dated June 10, 1884i Original No. 271MB, (lated May 8, 1893. Application for reissue filed March 18, 1.884.
To all whom it nm-gf concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPHl T. DUNHAM, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a newand Improved Combined Tag and Envelope, of -which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.A
My invention consists in atag provided with means for attaching it to the merchandise, and
' with an envelope or pocket to receive a bill or it opened.
the same, showing it closed; and Fig. 3 is ai' invoice of the merchandise.
In order that vvmy invention may be the bet- .ter understood, reference may be had to the -accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein I have shown my comn bined tag and envelope in its preferred form.
Figure l is a longitudinal view of myfimproved combined tag and envelope, showing Fig. 2 isa longitudinal view of longitudinal sectional elevation of the saine on the line z z, Fig. 2. I will now describe my invention' as shown in the drawings. l v
An envelope, A, preferably made of strong water-proof paper, is provided with an end flap of sufficient size to substantially lcover the side of the envelope. An eyelet-hole, C, is arranged in the end of the envelope' opposite to that at which the Hap B is at tacked, and the flap B is p-rovided at its free end with an eyelet-hole, D, which coincides w ith eyolet-hole C when the ap is folded over on the envelope. The full address of the con- Signee is written on the inner face of iiap B, as Shen-n in 1. The name, business-address, (rade-mark.. 5to., of the consignor or shipper -irc printed on the outer face of flap B, and the initials or mark, Src., of the consignee and the destination of the invoice are written on the outer face of flap-B as shown in Fig. The following or similar information is printed on the outer faceof iiap b: Express or railroad companies can always find the full name and address of the consignee ou the under side of this flap.
The combined tag and envelope is used in the following manner: The bill or statement is placed in the envelope A, and the flap B is folded over the envelope A, and a cord, hook, or other device for holding the tag to the box,
barrel, package, dro., is passed through the eye-"- lets C D, and is then secured to the package, dac., whereby it'will hold the flap closed over the envelope; or the envelope can be tacked to` the barrel, box, Src., andthe free end of the 55 flap is passed undera metal, rubber, or oilcloth strip tacked over that end of the envelope opposite'to the one to which the flap is fastened, whereby the flap will be held closed over the envelope, and in either case cani easily 6o be opened in case an employ of a railroad or express company wishes to road the address Written on the under side of the flap.
By using the above-described combined tag' and envelope the bill or invoices can be sent with the goods, which isa matter' of great imrportancaespecially if the goods are perish able, as it is desirable that the purchaser be lformedin regardtorthe pricesof the mens.. chandisel as soon as'possi-ble', so thathe can sell immediately. Furthermore, the address is concealed, and dealers cannot ascertain the addresses of the-customers of theirv competitors. v At the same' time the express and railway companies can easily ascertain the addresses by raising the nap B. v
l If 'desired, the address, &c., shown in Fig. 3 can be printed or otherwise produced on the back of the envelope,` and the flap plac'ed un'- der the envelope in attachingJ the name. 8o
,Bythe means for attachingthe tag tothe merchandise, I refer. to the holes O and D, through lwhich the oord or hookgis passed. These, as intimated, are re-enforced by eyelets of some suitable material.
The cord or hook employed for securing the tag to the merchandise also serves, as' shown, to close or secure the envelope and prevent its contents from escaping in transit. A
Having thus described my invention, I claimM 1 1.,A.combined tag and envelope, substantially as described, Wherein'thev flap which 'closes the mouth ofthe envelope is fastened down by the cord or other device which se- 95 cures. the tag to the merchandise, as set forth. J 2. A combined tag an envelope, substantially as described, the nap having an eyelet- 'hole which, when the said ,flap is folded down i on the envelope, coincides with an evelet-hole roe in the envelope, whereby the cord or hook for In witness wereof 1 have hereunto signed attaehxng the tag may be passed through bot-h my neme in the Wesenee of two subscribing holes.v substantially as set forth. witnesses.
3. "in a combined tug and envelope.l the eom- 5 bnatiou, with an envelope, A, having a. Hap, y J OSEPII T. DUNHAM.
