UNIT D STATES PATENT Orrrcno JOHN MOIVER, OF NE'VVPORT, VT., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, FRANCIS O. BATES, OF SAME PLACE, AND JOSEPH O. TODD, OF IATERSON, NE\V JERSEY.
STRAP-FASTENER..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,840, dated September 9, 1884. Application filed June 23, 1884. No model.)
To (tZZ'u/hmn it may concern' Be it known that I, JOHN MOIVER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in i the town of Newport, county of Orleans, and
State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strap-Fasteners,
fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
threaded, and with a metallic loop adjacent to the slots, and under which the strap is passed to lock the whole firmly in place.
' It also consists in the combination therewith of a strap and of a strap and snap-hook, by which it is fully adapted for use as a tiestrap for horses.
' The construction will be understood by reference to the drawings, in which Figure l is a side view of the snaphook, fastener, and strap, with the fastener proper shown in sec tion. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same parts except the strap. Fig. 3 is an end view of the plate and guard-loop. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the fastener combined to the buckle.
F is asnap-hook,having its shank formed as a fiat plate, G, at the extreme end of which is a loop, D, arched across the plate at a suffi- 0 cient distance to allow the insertion of aleather strap, E, beneath it. Three slots, A B C, are formed across the plate, the one lettered O, nearest the loop D, being adapted to receive the end of the strap, and to be secured in said slot by the body of the strap passed under the loop. The strap is inserted through the slots 0, B, and A in the order named, the end of the strap being first fitted into the slot 0 from the side next the loop, and the body of the strap is then passed through the loop D and drawn tightly down over the end part of the strap, which is inserted into the slots 0 and B, and thus locking the end firmly therein. The loop D forms a throat, D, from which the 5 strap emerges in the direction of the plate itself, and the hook F is thus attached to the end of the strap in the proper position for use. The buckle shown at F in Fig. 4 is joined to the plate G by extending its sides beyond the This invention consists in a plate providedwith three slots, through which the strap is cross-bars b, and casting the buckle and plate all in one piece.
This fastening may thus be used to secure buckles, loops, or any other part of a harness to the end or' middle of a strap with great facility, and as it does not require any cutting, punching, or other preparation in the strap, it affords a great facility for repairing any breaks that may occur in the straps at a time when tools and mechanics are not accessible.
I am aware that strap-fasteners have been made with cross-bars of different kinds; but, having fully set forth the nature of my invention,it will be readily distinguished from others in which the strap is secured by different means. Thus in United States Patent N 0. 96,16&, of 1869, a construction is shown combined with a snap-hook for an analogous purpose, but is not provided with a guard-loop,
D, to prevent the withdrawal of the end of the strap from the slot in which it is inserted.
It will be noticed thatthe snap-hook shown in the drawings is not a necessary adjunct of the invention, as a buckle or tug-loop might be substituted therefor and secured to a leather strap by my fastener in the manner described.
It will, however, be noticed, that my inven- 'tion is not restricted to halter-clasps, nor to the fastening of horses by means of a strap, but is adapted as well for fastening a strap to any article of harness. Such article as a buckle would then require to be cast with the plate G, having the slots A B O and guard D arranged as described.
My invention differs from others inhaving the three slots formed in a simple fiat plate, whereby the construction is greatly simplified and the strap held more firmly by the abrupt bends formed therein by its passage through the slots. I therefore disclaim the said Pat ent N0. 96,16I, or any other construction not containing the flat plate G, having the slots A B O and guard D, all arranged as described; and, having thus distinguished my invention from others,
I claim my invention as follows:
1. The combination in one piece, with a snap-hook, buckle, or other metallic harness attachment, of the strapfastener consisting of the Hat plate G, provided with the contiguous slots A B O, and the guard-100p 1), ad-
jacent to the slot 0, and adapted to retain a strap when applied thereto, substantially as 5 shown and described.
2. The e01nbinati0n,with the strap-fastener formed of the flat plate G, having the slots A, B, and O, and the guard D,arranged as de scribed, 01" the strap E, having its end insert- 10 ed in the slot next to the guard and threaded through the slots A. and 13 and uudertheguard ]),substantia1ly as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof -I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing; Witnesses.
JOHN MOIVER.
