Description
Aug. 7, 1962 P. J. HOWARD 3,047,971
HANDLE AND CARD CARRIER Filed Jan. 17, 1961 NAME OF DER GREETING NAME ETC OF S EN INVENTOR. 8404 l/ //0 1444/50 3,047,971 HANDLE CARD CAR Paul J. Howard, 458 N. Barrington Ave, Los Angeles 49, Calif. Filed Jan. 17, 1961, Ser. No. 83,301 4 Claims. (Cl. 4-0-10) This invention relates to handle and card carriers and included in the objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a handle and card carrier which although adapted for use with various containers or cartons is particularly adapted for use in conjunction with the Multiple Plant Container which is the subject matter of a co-pending patent application Serial No. 80,071, January 3, 1961; issued April 10, 1962, Patent No. 3,028,705.
Second, to provide a handle and card carrier which incorporates in a handle structure means for receiving an address and greeting card as well as means for receiving a card identifying or describing the contents of the container or carton; thus providing a means which is particularly suited in conjunction with the gift packaging plants or flowers.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side view of the handle with the card carrier partially inserted and the handle mounting tab shown fragmentarily.
FIGURE 2 is an end view thereof.
FIGURE 3 is a partial top view, partial sectional view thereof taken through 3-3 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse sectional view thereof taken through 44 of FIGURE 3.
The handle and card carrier includes a housing or grip member 1 in the form of an open end tube which is essentially triangular in cross section with rounded corners. The sides 2 have greater areas than the base 3 and are provided with windows 4.
Extending downwardly from the midportion of the base 3 is a web 5 which may have reinforcing ribs at its lateral extremities. A hand slot 7 is provided in the web 5 adjacent the base 3 of the housing. The lower end of the web 5 is provided with an inverted channel 8 which fits over the rim of a container.
In the construction illustrated the web is particularly arranged for connection to the aforementioned multiple plant container forming the subject of a co-pending patent application. The web continues below one side of the channel 8 to form an attachment tab 9. The means of attachment of the web is, of course, dependent upon the container or carton to which it is attached and varies accordingly.
The housing 1 receives a card holder or carrier 10 which is triangular in cross section corresponding to the cross section of the housing. Similar to the housing, the carrier 10 is in the form of an open end tube. The ends of the tube are adapted to be closed by caps 11. The carrier 10 is made sufiiciently smaller than the in side dimensions of the housing in order that its opposite sides may receive cards 12. The caps 11 fit over the ends of the cards to retain them on the holder and dimensioned so as to fit within the ends of the housing 1.
The housing 1, reinforced by the carrier 10 and end caps 11 provides a sturdy and comfortable handle or grip even when used with containers having substantial weight. The slot 7 receives the fingers of the users hand,
3,047,971 Patented Aug. 7, 1962 and the rounded undersurface of the base 3 distributes the load over the surfaces of the fingers.
By reason of the triangular shape of the housing ll, the two cards 12 are tilted from the vertical so as to be more readily read from an elevation above the handle.
While particular embodiments of this invention have been shown and described, it is not intended to limit the same to the exact details of the constructions set forth, and it embraces such changes, modifications, and equivalents of the parts and their formation and arrangement as come within the purview of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A handle and card carrier, comprising: a handle structure including means for attachment to a container and an open-ended tubular grip member of essentially triangular cross section having upwardly converging sides and windows in said sides; and a card holder of essentially triangular cross section including upwardly converging sides and means for mounting cards on said sides, said card holder dimensioned for insertion in said tubular grip member.
2. A handle and card carrier, comprising: a handle structure including means for attachment to a container and an open-ended tubular grip member of essentially triangular cross section having upwardly converging sides and windows in said sides; a tubular card holder of essentially triangular cross section including upwardly converging sides and dimensioned for insertion in said tubular grip member; and triangular caps closing the ends of said card holder, said caps having flanges fitting over and retaining the end margins of cards overlying the upwardly converging sides of said card holder.
3. A handle and card carrier, comprising: a handle structure including a web having a hand opening therein, means for attaching said web to a container, and a tubular grip member at the upper end of said web, said grip member being essentially triangular in cross section and having a base side forming the upper margin of said hand opening and upwardly converging side walls, said side walls having windows therein; and a card holder of essentially triangular cross section including upwardly converging sides and means for mounting cards on said sides, said card holder dimensioned for insertion in said tubular grip member.
4. A handle and card carrier, comprising: a handle structure including a web having a hand opening therein, means for attaching said web to a container, and a tubular grip member at the upper end of said web, said grip member being essentially triangular in cross section and having a base side forming the upper margin of said hand opening and upwardly converging side walls, said side walls having windows therein; a tubular card holder of essentially triangular cross section including upwardly converging sides and dimensioned for insertion in said tubular grip member; and triangular caps closing the ends of said card holder, said caps having flanges fitting over and retaining the end margins of cards overlying the upwardly converging sides of said card holder.
