UMBRELLA AND PARASOL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,076, dated August 26, 1884.

Application filed August 2, 1853.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHI GTON COHEN, of No. 33 Greenwich avenue, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting and Ornamenting Parasols and Sunshades, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to construct and place upon an ordinary parasol or sunshade an additional cover for the purpose of protection against rain or dampness, as well to allow a change to be made in the exterior appearance thereof, by using different covers at different times, as may be desired.

Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a plan view of an ordinary parasol, B B, as covered by my cover G, the latter being cut away to show the true cover B 13 attached to the frame beneath. Fig. 2 is avertical crosssection of an ordinary parasol with my cover attached or placed thereon, in'which A A represent the frame or ribs of the parasol; B, the true cover attached permanently thereto; 0, the additional cover placed over the latter. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on an enlarged scale of a portion of a parasol and cover, showing the means of fastening such cover to the frame.

Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts in the above-described drawings.

The additional cover is provided with a flexible loop or orifice, D, Fig. 1, in the center thereof, through which the top E, Figs. 1 and 2, of the parasol projects, the flexibility of the loop holding the cover firmly against such top, and yet allowing the same to be readily removed when desired.

cover 0, in number corresponding with the ribs A A of the parasol, each of which tags are provided with an orifice, G, Fig. 3,through or into which is passed the ends of each of the ribs A, the material of the true parasol furnishing a shoulder against which the tags are pressed, and which holds them steadily in their places.

In order to place this cover upon a parasol, before the latter is raised, the top end is passed through the flexible orifice D. The tags F F are then slipped over the ends of each of the ribs, the flexibility of the latter allowing this Then when the parasol is raised the cover is raised with it, and is held fast thereto by the flexible ring or orifice D and tags F F.

The material of this cover may bewaterproof, as a protection against rain or dampness, or it may be made of silk or any other material, differing in appearance from the material or fabric permanently attached to the frame, for the purposes above mentioned.

The umbrellas and 'snnshades to which these covers are attached are intended to be carried in the hand by means of the ordinary handle always attached thereto.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a parasol or sunshade, the cover 0, flexible loop D, tags F F, in combination with cover B, ribs A, and top E, all arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
