l FLAG-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 1917.
Application led September 19, 1916. Serial N o. 121,023.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN I-I. BREWER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Louisville, in lthe county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flag- Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention provides a very simple and effective cover for flags which is arranged so that it is always connected `with some part of the flag or staff and is therefore always ready for use and not likely to be lost. In one position the cover incloses the flag and provides a dust and water-proof case for it, and in another position the cover is rolled around the staff below the flag where it is out of the way and yet ready for promptly covering the flag again. The-invention also enables flags to be used for drilling implements in addition to their ordinary use as will be described later.
The characteristics and advantages of the invention will be further described so far as may be necessary in connectionvwith the detailed description of the accompanying drawing which shows certain exemplifying embodiments of vthe invention. It is to be understood, however, that the invention may be embodied in other forms and I do not limit myself to details, except as claimed.` v
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the flag unrolled and the cover wrapped and tied about the pole.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the flag rolled and the cover wrapped and tied about the flag.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailshow-ingloneV method of attaching the cover to the pole.
Fig. 4 is an elevation ,of a modification showing the cover spread out'to exhibit oneA method of attaching the cover to the pole.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail of the attachment device of Fig. 4.
Figs. Sand 4 show the lcover 1 spread out and attached to thev pole below the flag in two different ways. tially rectangular piece of fabric of any suitable kind to afford the necessary protec- The cover is a substantion, such as plain or Water-proofed canvas, or a composition rubber fabric or the like. At one corner, 2,`the cover is attached to the pole 3 near the lower edge of the flag 4. This attachment may be as shown in Fig. 3, by slitting the cover at 5 to form a tongue 6 and this tongueis lashed to thepole by va cord 7. When this method of attachment is used, when the flag is unfurled the cover is Aplaced in the position shown in Fig.4r 3 and rolledabout thepole as shown in Fig. 1 and lashed by the lashing cords 8, andfin this position the side 1a of the cover will be outermost. When the flag is furled the cover is unlashed and opened and then turned up so that the other side lb of the cover-is outermost, and then the cover is `rolled about the flag and again lashed as shown in Fig. 2, affording a complete protection tothe flag against dirt and moisture.
In this position of thecover the flag is tightly secured about the pole and the entire device then becomes substantially a wand which may be used as a substitute for a gun or other weapon in drilling.
When it is desired to have the same side of the cover outward in eitheriof its positions such an attachment as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 may be used, consistingof a stud or button 9, secured to the shaft and passing through an eyelet or buttonhole 1Q in the corner of the cover. In this case the cover may be'swung around on the stud as a pivot and rolled in either position with the same side outward.
Evidently, other methods of 'attachment may be employed and thel shape and mode of fastening the cover, and other details may be varied considerably within the principles of the invention as explained.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a flag or banner and its staff, of a cover consisting of a sheet of fabric secured to the'stafl' near one edge be rolled about the iag when furled or about the staff below the iag and means for. edge of the flag, and fastening devices on fastening the cover when rolled in either the cover, the parts being constructed and position. arranged so that the cover may be rolled 10 3. The combination With a flag and its about the flag When furled or rolled about 5 stad of a cover consisting of a piece of the staff below the flag and secured in either fabric secured to the staff near one of its position. corners at a place on, the staff near the lower JOHN H. BREWER.
