GARTER.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS T. MALLo-N, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to garters and has for its object t provide a simple and efficient device of the class specified, particularly adapted for sustaining half-hose on the leg.

My improvements comprise features illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the drawing accompanying this specification, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of one form of my improved garter, the ends of the sustaining cord being omitted. Fig. 2 is a view similar to that of Fig. 1, and showing a modification of my improvements. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, with a portion broken away to show the construction of the device. Fig. 4 is an end view corresponding with the showing of Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 5 is a top view of my improved device, illustrating one type of the leg encircling member. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the form of Figs. 2, 3 and 4, showing the device in use on the leg. Figs. 7 8 and 9 are end elevations of the device and illustrate successive steps, respectively, in applying the garter to the stocking. Fig. 6 is about three quarters size, while all the other figures are about full size.

Referring now to the details of my improvements, in Fig. 1 grip member 2, of flat construction, preferably has a width greater than its height and is preferably of semidisc shape, the curved portion being at the lower edge and having a straight upper edge 2*. Said grip member is preferably of semirigid construction and preferably includes mid-portion 3, Fig. 4, of semi-rigid mar terial, such as celluloid, and an outer covering 4 of flexible material, such as cloth. This covering is preferably in one piece and is folded over at the top edge 2*, thereby covering both faces of mid-portion 3. The covering 4 and mid-portion 3 may be secured together by stitches 5 around the lower or curved edge of the grip member, Fig. 1. Or, as in Figs. 3 and 4, said covering may be secured to mid-portion 3 by an adhesive, not shown. When an adhesive is used, mid-portion 3 may be perforated, as at 6, to assist in holding said adhesive.

lVithin upper folded edge 2 of covering 4, Fig; 1, a cord or ribbon 7 may be inserted, and preferably slidably held therein. Said cord is preferably of sufficient length to twice encircle the leg and tie, as shown in Fig. 6. Or, if desired, said cord 7, particularly if of flat ribbon shape, may be arranged as in Fig. 5 with a clasp 8 and adjustable takeup 9. In some cases I prefer to provide grip member 2 with means adjacent the ends of its upper edge for slidably attaching the cord thereto. The preferred form of such means comprises opposite l'oops 10, 10 of cord or tape, secured by known means such as cement, not shown, within the folded over upper edge 2 of grip member 2, Figs. 2, 3 and 4.

Figs. 7, 8 and 9 show the process of engagement with the upper portion 11 of the stocking S. Said upper edge 11 is first folded over outwardly to overlap the standing portion of the stocking a distance equal to about twice the width of the grip member 2, Fig. 7 Said grip member is then laid against the upper portion of the folded over stocking portion 11, with the curved edge of said grip member pointing downwardly. Then the lower portion of stocking portion 11 is folded upwardly to cover said grip portion, Fig. 8. Then the grip member, within the fold of stocking portion 11, is turned over inwardly with said folded portion 11, to the position of Fig. 9. Edge 2 of grip member 2 is thenuppermost, adjacent the infolded top edge of the garment and the ends of the cord are pulled taut and passed about the leg and tied as shown in Fig. 6. The grip member is thereby drawn tight within the stocking fold and securely held therein. There is thus provided a simple and highly serviceable garter, easily ap plied and easily removed, yet secure in use. The term cord as used herein will be understood to include round or flat cord or ribbon.

I claim:

1. A garter including in combination a grip member of flat construction of semidisc shape comprising a mid-portion of semi-rigid material, an outer covering secured thereto, and having means adjacent its upper edge for slidably attaching a cord thereto.

2. A garter including in combination a grip member of flat construction of semidisc shape comprising a mid-portion of semi-rigid material, and an outer covering of flexible material secured thereto, said grip member having means adjacent the ends of its upper edge for slidably attaching a cord thereto.
