(Cl. 30-43) This invention relates to improvements in electric shavers and particularly to the construction of the casing for mounting the electric motor and cutter elements.
According to the invention, the shaver case has a pair of sections which register in opposed relation to form a compartment housing the electric motor and provide a mounting for the cutter elements, having latching members detachably engaged with portions on each casing section for retaining the casing in assembled relation without the use of screws and without requiring use of special tools for assembling and disassembling the shaver. Some of the latching members may also be constructed and arranged to detachably mount the cutter elements on the casing. With such an arrangement the cutter elements and electric motor drive for the cutters may be completely assembled with the casing by means of the latching members. The latching members provided by the invention are formed of sheet metal strips or similar material, have central portions for embracing outer portions of both casing sections across the abutting edge portions and projections on opposite ends arranged in opposed relation to engage attaching portions on the casing in cooperative relation to hold the casing sections to gether. These attaching members are made so they may be manually snapped onto the casing. The cutter elements may also be snapped onto the casing and held by selected attaching members. The projections on opposite ends of each attaching member are in the form of resilient fingers to facilitate economic manufacture and a convenient structure for application and removal from the casing.

The shaver includes a casing generally indicated by the numeral 1 which is formed of a pair of oppositely formed substantially symmetrical casing sections 2 and 3. These casing sections may be formed in any suitable man ner and as illustrated in the drawings, are shown as being formed of molded plastic material to provide two half sections. Each half section is oppositely formed so that it will provide an imperforate outer wall portion merging into edge wall portions extending in substantially perpendicular relation to the imperforate wall portion with the peripheral edge portion of each casing section termimating in a position so that when the sections are assembled together, the peripheral edges are registered and engaged to form a closed casing. The assembled casing houses an electric motor within the compartment formed between sections 2 and 3 by the several wall poltions. The casing sections are formed with supporting portions 4 on one side which cooperate to support the cutter elements 5. The cutter elements 5 may include one or more shaver heads having inner and outer cutters, three being illustrated in the drawing. These may be mounted on supporting plate 6 having outwardly and upwardly extending ends 7 used to provide suitable parts for cooperation with latch members to detachably secure the cutter elements on the shaver casing.
Both casing sections are formed on the lower side as shown in FIGS. 1, 4 and 5, with attaching portions 8 in the form of elongated ribs. These ribs are formed adjacent the peripheral edge of the casing and extend outwardly in a direction opposite to the periphery of the casing, as shown in FIG. 5. A clamping member 9 is formed of channel cross section having the free edges turned inwardly, as shown in FIG. 5, for embracing ribs 8 in the manner shown in FIG. 5, to detachably secure casing sections 2 and 3 in assembled relation at one side of the shaver. As illustrated in the drawing, attaching member 9 is located at the opposite side of the shaver casing from the portion having the supporting portions 4 and cutter elements 5.
For the purpose of securing the casing in assembled relation adjacent to the cutter elements 5, each casing section is provided as shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, with recesses 10 in the outer surface of supporting portions 4. These recesses provide ribs or shoulder projections 11 on each casing section 2 and 3, as clearly shown in FIG. 3, for cooperation with attaching members 12 in securing the casing sections in assembled relation at the opposite side portion of the casing from attaching member 9. Attaching members 9 and 12 cooperate in securing the several parts of the casing and shaver together.
Attaching members 12 are formed of sheet metal strips having a center longitudinal rib portion while opposite ends of the metal strip are extended at substantially right angles to the central portion to form end portions or fingers 13. End portions 13 have terminal portions formed to provide inwardly extending securing fingers 14 arranged to engage in recesses 10 so that end portions 13 detachably interlock with projections 11 in detachably securing sections 2 and 3 of the shaver case in assembled relation at opposite ends of supporting portions 4. Attaching members 12 are formed of resilient sheet metal so that fingers 14 and ends 13 can flex relative to the center portion of the strip for convenient manual engagement into the assembled position shown in FIG. 3 for holding the shaver sections together.
Attaching members 12 are also formed in the central portion with resilient attaching fingers 15 extending from the side of attaching members 12. An angle end portion 16 is formed on the end of each finger 15, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. When attaching members 12 are slipped into position to hold casing sections 2 and 3 in assembled relation, as shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 inclusive, resilient attaching fingers 15 on the attaching members are arranged at opposite ends of supporting portions 4 on the casing to detachably engage over projecting ends 7 of base plate 6 carrying the cutter elements for detachably retaining the cutter elements detachably assembled in outwardly projecting relation on the shaver casing, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
Each casing section 2 and 3 is formed, as illustrated in the drawings to provide a motor compartment for an electric motor diagrammatically indicated at 20 of a wellknown form of construction. The inner walls of each casing section are provided with a plurality of the inwardly extending bosses 21 formed with recesses 22 at spaced intervals about the sides of each section. Motor supports made of resilient compressible material such as composition rubber, are indicated at 23 having supporting portions formed to engage the inner face of bosses 21 and projections from one side thereof engaged in recesses 22 for holding members 23 in position on the bosses. When an electric motor is assembled in the compartment in the casing between sections 2 and 3, fixed portions of the sides of the motor will engage motor supports 23 so that when the casing sections are clamped together supports 23 on one casing section will engage the opposite sides of the motor from the motor supports 23 carried by the other casing section. In this way the motor will be held by the supports between the two casing sections through the operation of the clamping members hereinabove described.
Casing sections 2 and 3 are also constructed to provide an aligning means for holding the casing sections in substantially aligned coincident relation when assembled as shown in the drawings. This aligning means includes projections 25 formed on casing section 2, as shown in FIGS. 3 and 5, which project outwardly from the periphery of casing section 2 in locations approximately at opposite ends of supporting portion 4. Casing section 3 is formed with recesses 26 in the periphery of the casing section in a position to receive projections 25, so that when projections 25 are engaged in recesses 26 both casing sections will register with one another to provide an assembled casing having a neat and smooth appearance about the meeting edges between the two sections.
The drawings have omitted illustration of a detachable casing section forming a hair pocket, in order to show the attaching members '12, although the casing and supporting portions 4 are constructed so supporting portions 4 will be housed within the detachable casing section also enclosing the shaver heads in a manner well-known in the art. A latch is shown at the left hand side of the shaver casing in FIGS. 1 and 2 below supporting portions 4 providing means for detachably connecting the d detachable casing section thereto in a manner well-known in the art. At the right hand side of FIG. 1 and in the center of FIG. 2 the starting wheel for the motor is illustrated and forms a type of construction also well known in the art.
With the casing constructed in the manner above described, the sections 2 and 3 are assembled by first hav ing rib portions 8 engaged in the in-turned edges of attaching member 9 after the motor has been positioned within one section ,of the casing against motor supports 23. The casing sections have the opposite sides in spaced relation to one another so that the casing sec.- tions extend in angular relation away from member 9. The starting wheel and the latch are positioned between the casing sections and they are then moved toward each other until projections 25 engage in apertures 26 which provides the final alignment of the sections in assembled relation. Attaching members 12 are then snapped into the positions shown in FIG. 3 for completing the assembly of the casing with the motor firmly held by motor supports 23 which are compressed under pressure in the casing. Cutter elements 5 may then be mounted on the shaver casing by snapping plate 6 into position so that ends 7 are engaged by latch fingers 15.
This completes the assembly of the shaver so that the 4 detachable casing section forming the hair receiver can then be added.
FIGS. 6 and 7 show a modified form of construction in which the shaver casing has supporting portions 30 for supporting the cutter elements. Attaching member 3 1 is formed of a strip of sheet metal having the opposite side edges bent laterally to form spring fingers 32. The central portion of the strip is formed with an aperture to receive the oscillator arms for the cutter elements. With this construction of attaching member 31, the casing is assembled in the same manner as in the construction above described so that when the supporting portions are in contacting relation, attaching member 31 has spring fingers 32 engaged over opposite sides of the supporting portions 30 for firmly clamping the casing sections together in assembled relation. The cutter elements may then be applied by suitable means not shown and the other parts of the shaver applied to complete the assembly.
The invention claimed is:
l. A casing for an electric shaver in combination with an electric motor and cutting means operated by said motor, comprising a pair of casing sections formed in opposed relation cooperating to provide a compartment housing said motor and supporting said cutting means with marginal portions of said sections engaging in opposed coincident relation, pairs of attaching portions formed on said casing sections in opposed relation, clamping strips each having opposite ends formed with opposed clamping fingers, each clamping strip engaging one pair of opposed attaching portions on said section for detachably retaining said casing sections in assembled relation, said casing sections being formed with motor engaging and supporting portions engaged with and retaining said motor housed firmly between said sections on said supporting portions and fingers on a pair of said clamping strips for detachably supporting said cutting means on said casing, said strips cooperating with said motor engaging and supporting portions to mount said motor within the casing and the fingers detachably mounting the cutting means on said casing.
2. A casing for an electric shaver in combination with an electric motor formed with positioning means and out ting means operated by said motor and formed with holding means, the combination of a pair of easing sections formed in opposed relation to provide a compartment housing said motor, supporting portions formed on an outer portion of each of said sections cooperating to support said cutting means in outwardly extending relation there on, pairs of attaching portions formed on said casing sections at opposite sides of said supporting portions in opposed relation, said casing sections having motor engaging elements cooperating with said positioning means for retaining said motor in assembled relation, and clamping members one at each side of said supporting portions enibracing said casing sections between a pair of adjacent attaching portions and having terminal elements engaging said attaching portions for securing said casing sections in assembled relation, and means on said clamping members engaging said holding means and detachably mounting said cutting means on said supporting portions.
3. A casing for an electric shaver as claimed in claim 2, having aligning means on said casing sections aligning said sections in assembled relation with each other.
4. A casing for an electric shaver having an electric motor and mounting cutting means operated thereby, the combination of a pair of easing sections formed in opposed relation to provide a compartment housing said motor and supporting said cutting means with marginal portions of said sections engaging in opposed coincident relation, attaching portions formed on each of said sections for cooperation with each other in opposed relation, means clamping said sections together including at least one member having an intermediate strip portion and end portions, said end portions engaging said attaching portions and cooperating therewith to retain said sections in assembled relation, selected of said clamping means having portions detachably securing said cutting means on said casing, said casing having complementary portions interengaged with parts of said electric motor for retaining said motor in position in said casing in assembled relation, and said means clamping said sections together in cooperation with said complementary portions forming the means for securirng said casing sections, motor and cutting means in assembled relation.
