Description

p 1950 P. J. J. VAES 2,952,909
DRY-SHAVER COMPRISING A REMOVABLE OR TILTABLE CUTTING HEAD Filed Aug. 25, 1958 INVENTOR PETRUS JOZEPHUS JOHANNES VAES BY M AGENT United States Patent DRY SHAVER COMPRISING A REMOVABLE OR TILTABLE CUTTING HEAD Petrus Jozephus Johannes Vacs, 'Drachten, Netherlands, assiguor to North American Philips Company, Inc., New York, N.Y., a corporation of Delaware Filed Aug. 25,1958, Ser. No. 756,828 Claims priority, application Netherlands Sept. 20, 1957 3 Claims. (Cl. 30-43) This invention relates to dry-shavers having a removable or tiltable cutting head comprising a cutting plate, secured in the cutting head, and a cutting member arranged behind it, the cutting member being enclosed by an enclosing member to prevent falling out.
In known cutting heads of the above-mentioned kind, the cutting plate is secured by means of a separate member with the use of screws, whilst a small mobile plate is provided for enclosing the cutting member. This plate may be displaced to a position such that the cutting member is freed and may be removed from the cutting head.
According to the invention, only one member is provided for securing the cutting head and enclosing the cutting member, so that a simplified construction is obtained.
According to a further feature of the invention, the enclosing member is arranged to be tiltable so that the cutting plate and the cutting member together may be readily removed.
In order to avoid that in a dry-shaver having more than one cutting plate, the associated cutting members are interchanged, which is not desirable in view of the matched polishing of the cutting member and the associated cutting plate, the cutting plates are each provided with an enclosing member in a manner such that tilting up one enclosing member has the eflect of locking the other enclosing members.
The construction according to the invention may be realized in a simple manner by giving the enclosing member the form of a U-shaped spring, the limbs of which engage the shaving plate and are resiliently enclosed behind an upright edge of the cutting head, while the junction piece between the limbs is articulated to the cutting head.
The invention also relates to a separate cutting head having one or more cutting plates with associated cutting members each provided with an enclosing member according to the invention.
In order that the invention may be readily carried into effect, it will now be described more fully, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a cutting head according to the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of Fig. 1, taken along the line IIII.
In the figures, a cutting head comprises a plate or shaver head frame 1 provided with apertures in which cutting plates 2 and 3 are arranged. Behind and adjacent to the cutting plates there are arranged the associated cutting members 4 and 5. Keeper members such as U-shaped springs 6 and 7 with their junction pieces or bight portions 8 and 9 are rotatably secured to the plate 1. The springs 7 is shown in its active position, in which the limbs 10 and 11 engage the plate 1 and also enclose the cutting member 5. The extremities of the limbs 10 and 11, which can resiliently be moved in the direction of the arrows, are enclosed behind an upright edge or groove-like retaining means 12 of the cutting head.
The spring 6 is shown in the position partly tilted up. By tilting over the spring in Fig. 2 farther to the right, the cutting plate 2 with the associated cutting member 4 may readily be lifted out of the aperture of plate 1. In the completely open condition, the position of spring 6 obstructs the opening movement of spring 7 and thereby prevents the spring 7 from being tilted open.
The shape of the junction pieces 8 and 9 is slightly curved so that the junction pieces also assist in the securing of the cutting members in the plate 1. Furthermore, it is thus rendered possible, despite the very small spacing which exists between the cutting plates 2 and 3, that tilting over one of the springs completely liberates the associated cutting plate.
What is claimed is:
1. A pivotal dry shaver head assembly comprising a shaver head frame, a cutting plate in said frame, a cutting member located under said cutting plate and in cutting engagement therewith, and a hinged keeper member secured to said shaver head frame for enclosing said cutting member in juxtaposition to said cutting plate While permitting the free movement of the former in one plane, said keeper member being a U'shaped spring, and means for holding the legs of said U-shaped spring in said shaver head frame.
2. A pivotal dry shaver head assembly as claimed in claim 1 wherein said means for holding the legs of said U-shaped spring in said shaver head frame is an elongated retaining groove located in the latter.
3. A dry shaver head assembly comprising a shaver head frame having an annular opening therein being provided with a cutting plate and a cutting member in superposed relationship therein, the wall of said opening having a groove-like retaining means, a resilient U-shaped keeper member positionable in said groove-like retaining means for enclosing said cutting plate and cutting member in said annular opening while permitting the free rotational movement of said cutting member therein.
