GATE AND DOOR SWING.

Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 30,327, dated October 9, 1860.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, F. W. KROEBER, of the town of Forbestown, in the county of Butte and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Self-Adjusting Gate and Door Swing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the application of the inclined plane, the wheel, the lever and the spring, to the adjusting of gates and doors to any required position.

To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I make the gate or door of any of the usual forms, and hang it upon two hinges, so as to allow it to describe as large an arc as is required. I then fasten permanently to the top of the gate or door post my in clined plane (nearly semicircular) of such dimensions or of such inclination as will give the gate or door the required motion, as is represented in the drawings by the letter A. I then place the lever B on the top of the gate or door, fastened at the point C by the foot piece represented by the two parts D, D. In the end of the lever I place.

a small wheel E, so as to roll on the inclined plane A, and the lever so made is held forcibly against the inclined plane by the spring S, which is made spiral, as is represented by s, in the ligure, or made of any other form. IVhen therefore the gate or door is opened, the spring and lever acting through the wheel on the inclined plane will cause it to shut. The letter F in the iigures represents a hollow cylinder having a slot in which the lever may move vertically but not laterally, and made to secure the spiral spring S, when a spiral is used. All these parts represented by the letters A, B., D, D, E, F, and S, I make of good and durable metal.

In the explanation I would say that the lower hinge in the model is inverted for the purpose of security in transportation and for that alone.

IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The application of the inclined plane, the wheel, the lever and the spring to the adjusting of gates and doors to any required position.
