Description
UNITED STATES- PAENT OF ICE.
HENRY S. LESI-IER, OF BROOKLYN, NEXV YORK.
DIAPERPIN.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 30,232, dated October 2, 1860.
To all whom t may concern:
' Be it known that I, HENRY S. LESHER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Diaper-Pins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification. Figure l, is a top view of the improved pin, as it appears when closed. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3, is a cross section of the same. Fig. et, is a top view of the same, when opened.
Similar letters in the figures refer to corresponding parts.
rIlhis invention consists in combining with a curved or circling pin jointed to the end of a tube made in the form of a segment of a circle, corresponding with the circle of the pin, in the opposite end of which the sharpened end of the said pin-enters, a spring hook bar, which extends to, and hooks on, the portion of the pin directly opposite, in such a manner as to enable the pin to be secured in place when passed through the portions of the diaper required to secure the same, with its sharpened end or point sheathed in the tube.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The portion of the pin A, which passes through and secures the diaper, is made a little greater in extent than a semicircle, and is jointed or pivoted at its blunt end to the end of a segmental tube B, whose radius corresponds with the radius of the pin, so to enable the two, when the point of the pin enters and is sheathed in the opposite end of the tube the required distance, to form a complete circle. To the o-pen end of the segmental tube B, is secured the end of a spring hook bar O, which extends inward therefrom radially, the required distance to cause its opposite hooked or bent end, to hook on or against the out-side of the pin A, at the proper distance from the hinged or jointed end to hold the pointof the same rmly within the tube, after being passed through the diaper or other article to be secured.
By referring to Fig. i, in the drawings it will be observed 'that the tubular portion B, and bar C, when the pin is open as represented, form a convenient body or handle to grasp in forcing the pin through the folds of the diaper or other article to be secured. After the pin A, is forced through the required distance, the said tube B, and bar C, are closed upon it, so as to brine' and sheath its point within the former sutliciently far to entirely shield it, and thereby prevent it from sticking the child wearing the diaper, or the nurse. The spring bar C, is then hooked over the pin, immediately opposite the open end of the segmental tube B, to which the opposite end of said bar is attached. which holds the said pin lirmly closed within the end of the tube B, against the outward or opening pressure exerted b y the diaper on the same.
To detach the pin from the diaper or other object, it is only necessary to press one finger and thumb on the curved tube B, and on the portion of the pin immediately next where the hook bar C ishooked thereto, and the said hook bar wll disengage itself from the pin, and thus leave the pin free to be withdrawn from the diaper or other article to which it is attached.
In case it is desired, a curved notch may be made in the outer periphery of the pin, near its point, and a corresponding projection made at the end of the tube B. as represented in Fig. 2, in such a manner as to cause the point of the pin to be held within said tube, by its outward spring or pressure forcing the notch against the projection.
`What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ism Combining with the pin A, and tube B, jointed together in the manner before de scribed, the cross hook bar O, or its equivalent for holding' the point of the pin A, in place within said tube, substantially herein set forth.
H. S. LESHER.
