Be it known that I, JACKSON OGDEN BEL- KNAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in toys; and it has for its objects, first, to provide a toy with means whereby two figures may be made to advance toward and retire from each other; "second, to provide means whereby two figures may be made to advance toward and retire from each other, and a third figure made to appear and disappear during the movements of the other figures; third, to provide means whereby two figures may be made to advance toward and retire from each other, and to exercise a movement similar to that of the butting of a goat;

and, fourth, to provide means whereby two figures are made toadvance toward and retire from each other, and to exercise a movement similar to that of the butting of a goat, and a third figure adapted to appear and disap pear during the recoil butting of the other figures.

With these ends in view my invention consists, essentially, of a suitable frame having a hand-piece, and provided with standards adapted to reciprocate to and fro on the frame, and provided with toy animal or human figures or other objects, and with a third figure, which may be made to appear and disappear with the advancement or retirement of the other figures.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and on which like letters of reference indicate similar or corresponding features, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved toy; Fig. 2, an end elevation thereof; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section through a portion of the frame, showing a modified means of connecting the figurestandards therewith; Fig. 4:, a longitudinal sectional view taken through the frame and the handle, showing the relative arrangement of the several parts; Fig. 5, a detached side elevation of the figure-standard, showing the same in a modified form 5 Fig. 6, a plan view thereof; Figs. 7 and 8, detail views of the operating-rods; and Fig. 9, a section through a portion of the frame, showing another modified means of mounting the figure therein.

The letter A designates a strip of metal or wood, the same being provided with atubular handle, B. The upper edge of the said strip is preferably provided with a groove constructed either by cutting away the material or by bending the side pieces constituting the same toward each other, as shown in Fig. 2.

At either end of the said strip I attach suitablesprings, C, (in the present instance of india-rubber,) to the inner ends of' which are attached, respectively, the figure-standards D.

These standards consist, preferably, of a piece of wire having an eye, E, formed therein near its base, to which an actuating-string (to be loops or rings for the reception of the fingers.

On the standards D are mounted in the present instance figures representing goats, though I do not confine myself to any particular animal, as Icontemplate mounting thereon such figures as my fancy may dictate. On the operating-rod I, I mount afigure, in (the present instance representing the head of a man.) around and beneath which, and also mounted on the beam A, I place a hollow structure representing a portion of a barrel. The effect of this operation is to cause the head to avoid the blows of the goatheads,and at the same time the natural move ments of the minature figures present an amusing and pleasing appearance.

The design of the toy as represented in the present instance is a caricature or humorous take-off of a popular subject, though I contemplate Varying the animals and figures at pleasure.

As represented in Fig. 3, the figure-standard is constructed to oscillate to and fro, so as to give the required movement to the figure, though not to move back and forth, the lower end of said standard being pivotally connected with the strip K, rigidly mounted upon the strip A. The spring 0 is connected with the strip A and with the loop in the wire, so as to make it stand normally in the position shown, and to cause it to return to that position when thrown therefrom by the action of the cord G, which in this instance passes through an aperture in the strip, and is provided with a ring at its free end, the operat ing-rod J being dispensed with. This arrangement of the string may also be applied to the devices, as shown in Fig. at, by dispensing entirely with the rods I and J and allowing the cords G and H to pass down through the aperture in the strip and through the handle.

In Fig. 5 the figure-standard is constructed as represented in Fig. 4:, save that a roller, L, is applied to the lower end thereof, whereby the same can be made to roll easily over a plane surface, it being contemplated to use this device on a large scale in a theater or museum. A further modification of the figure-standard is shown in Fig. 9, in which the same ismounted on a rocker-shaped base, the spring 0 being attached to one end thereof and the actuating-cord to the other, whereby when the latter is pulled the figure is made to rock.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a toy, the combination, with a plurality, of figures, of another or intermediate figure, the former constructed to be advanced toward the latter, and the latter constructed to be actuated simultaneously with such advancing movement of the former.

2. In a toy, thecombination, with the frame and the figure standards having figures mounted thereon, of the intermediate figurestandard having a figure mounted thereon, the former constructed to advance toward each other and to be given an oscillating movement, and the latter constructed to be simultaneously withdrawn.

3. In a toy, the combination, with the strip and the sliding figure-standards, of the vertical figure-standards, said standards being connected together, and the former constructed to slide toward each other and to be given an oscillating movement, and the latter to be simultaneously and vertically actuated.

. 4. In atoy,the combination, with the grooved strip, the sliding figure-standards, and the springs connecting them with the strip, of the intermediate verticallyoperating figure-standard and the connecting-cords and actuatingrods, one set of which is adapted to advance the sliding standards, and the other set of which is adapted to simultaneously oscillate the sliding standards'and actuate the vertical standard, so as to withdraw the center figure.

5. In a toy,the combination,with the grooved strip having a handle, the sliding figure-standards, the springs, and the actuating cord and rod, 'of the intermediate figurestandard and rod,and the cord connecting the same with the sliding standards, whereby the sliding standards are made to advance and retire to and from each other, and are given an oscillating movement si multaneouslywith the withdrawal of the center figure.

6. In a toy, the combination, with a sliding figure-standard having an anti-friction roller journaled thereto, of the spring and the operating-cords attach ed thereto, whereby a sliding and oscillating movement may be imparted to the figure.
