Description

INVENTOR fldolf Gulzvl WITNESSES ATIOR/VEYS ADOLF GUND, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ANIMATED TOY.
Specification of Letters'latent.
Patented Mar. 3, 1914.
Application filed February 27, 1913. Serial No. 751,002.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLF GUND, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Animated Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved animated toy in the form of a doll or simulating an animal, and arranged when alternately pressed and released to actuate certain members of the body, such as the arms, legs, wings or the like, and at the same time cause the production of sounds similar to those emitted by the simulated child or animal.
For the purpose mentioned use is made of a frame held in the body of the toy, a soundproducing device mounted on the said frame and having movable actuating parts, and levers fulcrumed on the said frame and connecting the said movable body members with the said actuating parts to simultaneously sound the sound producing device on alternately pressing and releasing the same, and to actuate the said movable body members.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the animated toy in the form of a doll, parts being shown in section; Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of the actuating device, parts being shown in section; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The animated toy, as shown in Fig. 1, is in the form of a stuffed doll provided with a body A having a fabric cover B, to which are attached fabric arms C, C and legs C, C carrying solid arms D, D and feet D, D, respectively, the body A, arms C, C and legs 0', C being preferably covered by an outer garment covering E of a fabric material.
Within the body A is arranged a light frame F, preferably made of sheet metal, and having cut-out portions F at the sides. In the frame F is mounted a sound-producing device G consisting essentially of two side plates G, G connected with each other at the front, rear, top and bottom by a fabric material G to provide a sound box. One of the side plates, as shown the side plate G, is provided with a sound producer G, of any approvedconstruction, arranged to produce sounds slmilar to those emitted by the toy or animal simulated. The side plates G, Gr are held normally pressed apart by a spring G so that the covering G is held in a stretched position with the side plates G, G resting against the sides of the frame F above and below the cut-out portions F (see Fig. 1).
The upper ends of the side plates G, G are provided with staples H engaging uide rods I held on the upper portion 0% the frame F, and the side plates G, G are provided at their lower ends with staples H engaging a guide rod I held on the lower portion of the frame F. B the arrangement described the sound-pro ucing device G is supported within the frame F and the side plates G, G are guided on the guide rods I, I. Now when the user of the toy presses the sides of the toy a pressure is exerted on the side plates G, G so as to move the same toward each other against the tension of the spring G", and in doing so the air contained in the box-like body of the sound-producing device is forced out through the sound-producer G to produce sounds simulating those of a child or animal. When the pressure on the sides is released the spring G returns the side plates G, G to outermost position and in doing so air is sucked in by way of the sound producer G into thesound-producing device.
The staples H are pivotally connected by links K with the inner ends of levers L having loops L through which extend transverse pivots N attached to the front and rear of the frame F so that the levers L can freely swing on the said pivotes N and slide transversely thereon, it being understood that the links K have a loose connection with the staples H as well as with the levers L (see Figs. 1 and 2). The outer ends of the levers L are provided with blocks L of cork or other suitable material to which the inner ends of the fabric arms C are attached so that when the side plates G and G are moved toward each other a swinging motion in an upward direction is given to the levers L and consequently to the arms C and hands D, and when the side plates G G are relieved of pressure and return to outermost position by the action of the spring G then the levers L swing downward thereby moving the arms C and hands D in a like direction.
The staples H are pivotally connected by links K with loops L on levers L having loops L through which extend pivots N similar to the pivots N and likewise. attached to the front and back of the frame F. The outer ends of the levers L are provided with blocks L similar to the blocks L and connected with the upper ends of the fabric legs C, as shown in Fig. 1. Now when the plates G, G are alternately pressed and released as above described then the links K impart an alternate up and down swinging motion to the levers L thereby imparting a similar swinging motion to the legs C and the feet D.
It will be noticed that by having the loose connections described, the arms and feet can readily swing into any desired direction, that is, can swing forward and rearward as well as up and down and independent of the mechanism used for giving an up and down swinging motion to the said arms and legs when alternatel pressing and releasing the said plates G,
It is expressly understood that when the user of the top shakes the body thereof, the legs and arms move freel owing to the loose connections above descri ed.
The animated toy shown and described is very simple in construction and the several parts can be readily assembled.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
