, G. W. LINGLE.
PROTEQTIO'N TIP FOR OAR BLADES. No. 301,903. Patented July 15; 1884.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.GEORGE LINGLE, OF STRYKER OHIO.
PROTECTIONLTIP FOR OAR-BLADES. g
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,903, dated July 15, 1884.
Application filed March 19, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LINGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stryker, in the county of Williams and State of Ohio, have invented certainnew and use ful Improvements in Protection-Tips for Oar- Blades; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to guards or protection-tips for oar-blades, and has for its object the provision of a tip adapted to be applied to an oar, and having suitable indentations to avoid formation of sharp angles or corners in the tip;
To the accomplishment of the above my invention consists of the tip constructed and applied to an oar-blade, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a tip as it appears in the blank before being applied to the oar-blade. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tip in position upon the blade, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the tip as it appears when in position upon the blade.
Similar letters of reference in the several drawings denote like parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the blank, made in the form shown, and having the cut-away portion a 1. at its sides and rounded ends a".
The dotted lines b show .the points at which the sides are bent upward when the blank is applied to the blade.
c 0 represent cuts or slits extending from the outer edges of the blank to points thatintersect the lines I). The slits a are in line with the side edges of the oar-blade.
d (1 represent .indentations formed in the blanks at the points occupied by the lower corners of the blade when the latter is in position within the tip. l
The dotted lines (1 d represent the points at which the end portions of the blank are folded upon the blade.
6 f represent apertures formed in the side 'and end flaps of the blank for the passage of rivets, whereby the tip is held in position upon the blade.
The blank, prepared as above described, is
applied to the oar-blade as follows: The end flaps, first being bent upward, have their sides bent against the sides of the blade, after which the side flaps are bent upward and into the position shown in Fig. 2. Rivets are now passed through the apertures e f and the oarblade. When the tip is in position, thelower corners thereof will appear rounded,as shown in Fig. 2, the indented portions dbeing pressed into the wood of the oar, the bottoms of said indentations being, upon the dotted line m.
Said indented portions (1 serve to give arounded lower corner to the tip, whereby the tip is strengthened and sharp angles avoided, as will be readily understood. 1
Modifications of the form of blank may be madeas, for instance, the out-away portions a a may be restored. Therefore I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact form shown, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
I am aware of Patent No. 191,923, and do not claim the construction therein shown and described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
1. Aprotection-tip for oar-blades, constructed substantially as described, havingtransverse slits on a linewith the side edges of the oarblade, and indentations arranged between the inner ends of said slits, substantially as de scribed, and for the purpose set forth.
2. A protection-tip for oar-blades, having transverse slits terminating at their outer ends in cut-away portions, indentations ar-, ranged between the inner ends of said slits, and apertures for rivets, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
3. A protection-tip for oar-blades, having slits and apertures, the ends of the tip overlapping the central or body portion thereof, the same, substantially as described, and for substantially as shown and described. the purpose set forth. 1o
4. Aprotection-tip for oar-b1ades,construet- In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in ed substantially as described, having end presence of two Witnesses. 5 flaps folded against the blade and side flaps GEORGE XV. LINGLE.
folded against said end flaps and riveted there Vitnesses: to, said tip having indentations that form \V. B. KITZMILLER,
rounded corners to the tip for strengthening L. K. BOOTHMAN.
