(Cl. 20G-48) 'Ihis invention relates to a combination pack for ciga rettes and matches, and it particularly relates to a pack of this type wherein the matches and cigarettes are simultaneously movable from a protected hidden position within the pack to an exposed position wherein each is available for use.

There have heretofore been provided various different types of combination cigarette and match packs. However, none of these prior packs were suiiiciently easy to use and efficient for their purposes, since the cigarettes and matches were usually either disposed on opposite sides of the pack so that it was necessary to turn the pack one way for a cigarette and the other way for a match or, even when the matches and cigarettes were on the same side, it was necessary to open separate compartments by separate manipulations in order to reach the cigarettes and matches.

It is one object of the present invention to overcome the above as well as other ditiiculties inherent in prior devices of this kind by providing a combination pack wherein the cigarettes and matches are simultaneously movable into and out of exposed position on the same face of the pack.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a pack of the aforesaid type which is relatively simple in construction and easy to use.

Other objects of the present invention are to provide an improved pack, of the character described, that is easily and economically produced, which is sturdy in construction, and which is highly eicient in operation.

With the above and related objects in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully understood from the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:

Referring in greater detail to the drawing wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts, there is shown a combination pack, generally designated 10, comprising a generally rectangular outer casing 12 having side walls 15, the casing 12 being open at both ends, as at `14 at the top and 16 at the bottom. At approximately the median portion of the front wall 17 of the casing 12 there is provided a slot 18 extending transversely across the width of the casing 12. This slot 18 is defined by `a relatively straight vertcal lower lip 20 and by an inwardly indented upper lip 22 overlapping the lower lip 20.

Slidably positioned within the casing 12 is an insert envelope 24 comprising side walls 40 and a rear wall 26 having integral upper and lower hinged closure aps 28 and 30 respectively. The iiap 28 is also integrally hinged to actuating and securement ap 32. It will be noted that the transverse dimension of flap 28 is substantially the same as that of the outer casing 12, that edges 29 of flap ICC 28 project enough beyond the insert side walls 40 to overlie the casing side walls 15, thus requiring that the insert envelope 24 be opened only through the open top end 14 and preventing the insert from being pushed through the open bottom end 16.

To facilitate closing the flap 28 into the outer casing 12, the closing iiap 32 has its maximum transverse dimension substantially the same as the maximum internal transverse dimension between the casing side walls 15, as shown at 31 for a slight distance, and this edge portion 31 of ap 32 is further reduced in dimension as at 33, the edge portion 33 being connected to edge portion 31 by a curved bevel edge portion 35. This construction of flap 32 facilitates easy opening and closing of flap 32 into the outer casing yet provides suiiicient frictional contact against the inside of the side walls 15 of casing 12 to keep the flap 28 hat against the top when in closed position. The ap 30 is also integral with a hinged support iiap 34, this flap 34 serving as a support for a packet of matches 36. The matches 36 are preferably of the ordinary paper safety type and extend up from a common base 318. The base 38 is stapled, glued or otherwise secured to the ap 34.

The insert envelope 24 is also provided with a pair of oppositely-disposed side flaps 40 which are integrally hinged to the rear wall 26. These side flaps 40 combine with the upper and lower aps 28 and 30 to form a retaining means or envelope for cigarettes indicated at 42 which are preferably wrapped in a foil wrapper 44. This retaining means or envelope is open at the front to permit easy access to the foil-wrapped cigarettes when they are pulled out of the casing 12 (as in FIGS. 5` and 6).

The bottom edge of the front wall 17 of the casing 12 is provided with a scratch strip 46 for igniting the safety matches 36 after they have been torn away from the base 38.

'Ihe matches 36 are so arranged that when the envelope 24 is pulled up into4 the exposed position (as in FIGS. 5 and 6) the inwardly extending lip 22 effects a Cam action whereby the matches 36 cammed through the slot 18 and into an outwardly inclined, exposed position (shown in FIG. 6) where they are easily accessible for being individually torn away from the base 38.

In this exposed position, it is possible to pull away a section of the foil 44, obtain a cigarette 4.2 and pull oi a match 36. Then, when the match 36 and a cigarette 42 have been taken, a mere downward push on the ap 28 and 32 moves both the cigarettes 42 and the matches 36 back into their concealed storage position, and then the match 36 is struck on the match strip 46, the remaining matches 36 being Safely concealed behind lip 20 against accidental ignition. In this storage position, the flap 32 is inserted within the outer casing 12 with its edge portion 31 helping to hold the device in closed position.

Although this invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as being illustrative rather than limiting, since the invention may be variously embodied, and the scope of the invention is to be determined as claimed.

Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of this invention, what is claimed is:

l. A combination cigarette and match pack comprising an outer casing having at least one open end, a transverse slot on one portion of said casing, said slot being defined by opposite lips at least one of which extends inwardly of said casing to provide a cam surface, and the other of which overlaps said one lip, a retaining means slidably positioned within said casing and movable through said open end, said retaining means being constructed to hold a plurality of cigarettes in stacked arrangement and having secured thereto the corresponding ends of a packet of matches, the opposite ends of the matches extending freely toward said slot and against said cam lip surface 3 and behind said overlapping lip and actuating means to slidably move said retaining means relative to said casing.

2. The pack of claim 1 and said cam lip surface being inwardly inclined relative to said retaining means.

3. The pack of claim 1, said retaining means being defined at opposite ends by hinged flaps and having an open portion to permit access to the cigarettes held therein.

4. The pack of claim 1, said retaining means having a hinged ap on one end, said flap being arranged to serve as saidactuating means when in one position and as a closure means in another position.

`5. Acombination cigarette and match pack comprising a generally rectangular, substantially flat, hollow casing having at least one open end, a slot extending transversely across one face of said casing, said slot being dened on its opposite longitudinal edges by a pair of overlapping lipsyone of said lips extending angularly inward to form a camsurface, a generally rectangular, substantially ilat envelope telescopically slidable Within said casing and movable through said open end, said envelope having one open'face complementary to that face of the casing provided with said slot and having a packet of matches secured at corresponding ends to said envelope below said open :face vand'extending toward said slot into contact with said'cam surface.

6. The pack of claim 5, said envelope being provided vat opposite ends with a hinged Vclosure flap, the matches being secured to one of said closure flaps.

7. The pack of claim 6, the other of said closure aps having an actuating and securement flap hinged thereto, said actuating and securement ap being arranged to provide a pull tab when in one position and to form an insertable securement means when tucked into said casing.

8. The pack of claim 7, said secu-rement flap having a reduced transverse dimension adjacent its free end.

9. The pack of claim 7, said other closure ilap having a transverse dimension greater than the internal transvverse dimension of said casing, thusilimiting downward movement of said envelope into said casing.
