LOCKING MEANS FOR SASI-ILESS WINDOWS Original Filed June 16, 1958 ilufllrllyii Tilli fi il BY do 6 ATTORNE United States Patent 3,017,212 PANEL LOCKWG MEANS FOR SASI-EESS WINDOWS Romuald Migneault and Fernand W. Migneault, both of 332 St. Andre St., Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Original application June 16, 1958, Ser. No. 742,294, now Patent No. 2,949,647, dated Aug. 23, 1960. Divided and this application June 26, 1959, Ser. No. 823,187
2 Claims. (Cl. 292-202) This invention relates to a device for locking or clamping together the glass panels of sashless windows. This application is a division of application Serial No. 742,294, filed June 16, 1958, now Patent No. 2,949,647 granted August 23, 1960.
In sashless window structures, it is usual to provide a locking device for clamping the two glass panels together and thus render them immovable with respect to each other. Frequently, such locking device is effective only in the closed position of the window. Moreover, it ordinarily requires the mounting of one of its members in one of the panels which may be a costly and difficult operation.
It is an object of this invention to provide a panel locking device for sashless windows which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture, which does not require mounting in a glass panel, which is effective in closed or any open position of the window, and which is convenient in operation.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of a sashless window structure embodying the invention,
FIGURE 2 is a side elevation of the panel locking device, and
FIGURE 3 is a plan view, partly in section, of the panel locking device.
In the drawing, the window assembly illustrated comprises a wood frame 1 having sill 2, jambs 3 and 4 and head piece 5. A pair of sashless glass panels 6 and 7 are slidingly mounted in the frame in groove 8 in the sill and groove 9 in the head piece. Grooves 10 in the jambs receive the outer edge portions of the panels. In the closed position of the panels, as shown in FIGURE 1, the meeting inner edge portions thereof overlap in conventional manner.
In ordinary use, panel 6 remains in substantially fixed position in the frame while sliding movement of panel 7 with respect to the frame and panel 6 is effected to open and close the window. To facilitate such sliding movement, a pull 11 may be provided on panel 7.
A locking device 12 in accordance with the invention is mounted on the sill opposite panel 7 and in slightly spaced relation to the overlapping portions of the panels. A similar locking device 12 may be mounted on the head piece 5, as shown.
The locking device 12 comprises a base plate 13 adapted to be adjustably mounted on the sill 2 as by means of screws 14 extending through slots 15 in the plate 13. Pivoted at 16 to the base plate is a clamping knob 17 having a projection 18 provided with a non-metallic tip 19 for engagement with the panel 7. The tip 19 is formed 3,017,212 Patented Jan. 16, 1962 of a resilient, high surface friction material such as rubber or plastic composition, for instance, polyethylene, and is provided with a rearwardly extending shank 20 which is rigidly and frictionally seated in a socket 21 in knob 17. The knob 17 has manually engageable curved surfaces 22 for easy manipulation thereof. A stop 23 carried by the base plate is engageable by knob 17 to define the locked position thereof. It will be apparent that, by rotating knob 17 to swing its tip 19 out of engagement with the glass panel, the latter is freed for sliding movement. To lock panels 6 and 7 together, it is simply necessary to swing the knob to apply pressure on panel 7 and thus press panels 6 and 7 against the rear wall of groove 8. This clamping pressure is suflicient to prevent relative movement of the panels. Moreover, it will be apparent that the locking device is effective for clamping action in closed or any partially open position of panel 7. The tip 19, being relatively soft with respect to the glass of the panel, imparts no injury thereto.
We claim:
1. A device for locking slidable glass panels in any position along a sill of a sashless Window structure comprising: a base plate fixedly mounted on the sill, a knob, means pivotally mounting said knob on said base plate, a rigid projection on one side of said knob adjacent a glass panel, said projection having an axially aligned socket therein facing towards said glass panel, a resilient glass panel engaging tip fixedly positioned within said socket, a stop positioned on said base plate adjacent said knob, stop engaging means on said knob preventing said pivotal movement of said knob in one direction when said tip is engaged with said glass panel to lock said panel in any position along the sill, and concave finger receiving surfaces on second and third opposed sides of said knob adapted to be grasped to pivot said tip into and out of engagement with said glass panel at any position of said glass panel along said sill.
2. A device for locking slidable glass panels in any position along a sill of a sashless window structure comprising: a base plate fixedly mounted on the sill, a knob having fiat sides extending perpendicularly to said panels and positioned at the bottom of the knob, means pivotally mounting said knob on said base plate, a rigid projection on one side of said knob adjacent a glass panel, said projection having an axially aligned socket therein facing towards said glass panel, a resilient glass panel engaging tip fixedly positioned within said socket, a stop positioned on said base plate adjacent said knob, one of said flat sides forming a stop engaging meanson said knob, preventing References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Leger June 23, 1908 Riddell Mar. 7, 1950
