' J. HAMILTON.
MINERS LAMP.
110,301,495; Patented July 8, 1884.
N. PETERS. Pmmljthognplmr. Washington. 04 a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HAMILTON, OF BELLEVUE, PENNSYLVANIA.
MINERS LAMP.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,495, dated July 8, 1884.
Application filed October 6, 1883. (No model.) I
To all 2072 0111 it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN HAMILTON, of Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Miners Lamps; and I do here by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in miners lamps; and it consists in providinga means for securing the lid intbe mouth ofthe lamp and preventing the spreading of the side seam.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improvement in miners lamps. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the ring I eniploy for holding the upper edge of the mouth of the body in form and preventing the spreading of the side seam, and also for grasping the flange of the lid.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the body of the lamp, B the lid, and C the metallic ring, having two flanges, e f. The upper edge of the mouth of the lamp is slightly flared outward, and is placedbetween said flanges. The outer flange, e, is secured to the upper edge of the mouth of the lamp by the soldering process, thereby preventing the spreading of the side seam, g, of the body of the lamp, which side seam is often separated by rough usage, which separation will by this arrangement be obviated. The flange f acts as a circular spring and clasps the flange D of the lid 13, thereby holding the lidin place and preventing the escape of oil at the mouth of the lamp, the advantage of which will be ap parent to the manufacturer and user of miners lamps.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim is- In a miners lamp, the ring 0, having flanges e f, in combination with the body A and lid B, substantially as specified.
J OHN HAMILTON."
