PACKAGE AND BOOK HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,979, dated June 24, 1884.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HUFF, a citizen of the United States residing at St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package and Book Holders, of which the following is a description.
- The drawing represents a perspective view of my package and book holder.
My invention relates to improvements in package and book carriers; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed outin the claims.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a right-angular frame formed of a single piece of wire, and consisting of the parallel horizontal arms a, provided with loops b at their outer ends and bent-up vertical arms a at their opposite ends, joined together at their upper ends by the bent horizontal arm (1, the arms 0 and d forming three sides of a rectangle, and constituting, with the horizontal arms a, the main frame of the carrier, formed of a single piece of wire bent into the shape described. The horizontal arms a of the right-angular frame A are connected together by meansof wire rods 6 at right angles to the parallel horizontal arms a and diagonal wire rods h, said wire rods serving the double purpose of tying the horizontal arms a together and preventing the escape of any matter in the package at the bottom of the frame A, or small books passing through the space between the horizontal arms a.
B represents a spring-frame made of a single piece of wire, forming three sides of a rectangle, and provided with hooks 'i i at the lower ends of the longitudinal sides 9 g of the springframe B, which engage with the loops b at the outer ends of the horizontal arms a. The upper end, 70, of the rectangular frame B is formed by bending the wire constituting the frame B at the upper ends of its longitudinal sides 9 g. The upper horizontal part, k, of the rectangular spring-frame B is provided with a bent-up loop, Z, for engaging with a rack in the handle, hereinafter more fully described. The springframe B has its longitudinal sides g g convexed or curved inwardly, and is provided with one or more cross-pieces, m, each beveled on its inner face, and provided with staples or eye bolts 41, secured to the cross-piece on near its ends,and passing around the longitudinal arms 9 of the spring-frame B, by means of which construction the cross-piece m can be adjusted or slid up and down on the arms 9 g, so as to grasp packages or books inserted in the carrier. Similarly-constructed adjustable crossbars m may also be applied to the vertical arms c c of the right-angular frame A. The handle O of the carrier, which is pivoted to the horizontal arm (I of the main right-angular frame A, is formed of a single piece of wire, D, and is constructed as follows: One end 0 of the wire D is provided with a hook, 0, at one end, and the part 0 of the wire proceeds horizontallyto the left a short distance, and is bent at right angles downward to form the part 0 of the handle, which at its lower end is bent abruptly and folded on itself at 0 forming the loop 0, which passes partly around the horizontal arm d of the main right-angular frame A, and plvoting the handle at that point to the main frame A. The part 0 of the handle passes upwardly from the loop 0, and is bent horizontally, forming the part 0 ,which at its righthand end is bent vertically downward,forming the part 0, the lower end of the part 0 belng formed into a loop, 0, partly surrounding the horizontal bar (2 of the frame A. The part 0 of the wire is then bent upon the part 0 and proceeds a short distance upwardly, when it 1s again bent horizontally to the left, forming the part 0 of the wire, which. at its inner end 18 bent vertically downward,forming'the part 0 which passes through the hook 0 in the wire, and is finally bent outwardly and under the" arm cl of the frame A to form the rack R,'the corrugations of which are adapted to engage with the loop Z of the spring-frame B.
p representsaspring coiled around the lower part of the handle and around the upper crossbar, d, of the frame'A, and thence projectlng forward,and provided with a loop or loops, 1), at its forward end,adapted to engage with the forward end of the wire forming the rack R. The tension of the spring 19 is exerted upwardly, and when its loop 1) ispassed over the end of the rack it forces the rack R upwardly, and holds the rack in engagement with the loop Z in the horizontalupper part, 70, of the spring- IOO frame B. When it is desired to remove the package or books from the carrier, the spring 1) is pressed downward, so as to release its loop 1) from the outer end of the rack, and the v 5 spring-frame Bis moved outwardly, so that the package or books can be readily removed from the carrier.
Having thus described myinvention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the right-angular frame A, spring frame 13, pivoted thereto, handle 0, hinged to the upper cross-piece of the frame A, and provided with the rack R, and I 5 means adapted to hold the rack in engagement with the frame 13, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the right-angular frame A,made of a single piece of wire, of the spring-frame B,made of a single piece of wire, hinged at its lower end to the frame A, and provided at its upper end with the loop Z, handle 0, and rack R, both madeof one piece of wire and pivoted to the upper end of the main frame A, and spring 1), provided at its frame B, made of a single piece of wire, and
having hooks i i at its lower ends,wl1ich engage with loops I), and its longitudinal sides 9 curved inwardly, and beveled cross-piece m, adjustably secured to the longitudinal wires 9 g, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a package and book holder, the handle O and rack It, both made of a single piece of wire, constructed substantially as shown and described.
