Description

(No Model.)
W. H. BLAKE, 2d.
TUB AND BOX FASTENER. No. 300,942. Patented June Z l', 1884.
- ."t WI TJVESSES 1.1V VENTOR aflttbr'neys NITED STATES VILLIAM H. BLAKE, 2D, OF SNVANTQN, VERMONT.
I TUB AND BOX FAS'TENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,942, dated June 24, 1884.
Application filed April 10,1882. Renewed November 15, 1883. (No model.) Patented in Canada July 11, 1883, No. 17,206.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. BLAKE, 2d, of Swanton, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inTub and Box Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved tub and box fastener, andFig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class-of fastening devices for the covers of tubs (such as butter-firkins) and boxes, which consist of a narrow sheet-metal strip having a tack inserted. through each end; and it consists in the improved construction of such a fastener, in which the securing tacks or nails are inserted through the strip, near the ends of the same, whereupon the ends of the strip are doubled back over the heads of the nails or tacks and soldered down, as hereinafter more fully de scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the strip or narrow plate of tin or other suitable sheet metal, through opposite ends of which tacks B B are inserted, and held in place by doubling the projecting ends of the strip over the heads of the tacks, as shown at a a. To prevent this doubled end from being bent up at right angles in handling the fasteners, or the tubs or boxes on which they are used, they are soldered down upon the body of the strip by a thin layer of solder, (shown at 0,) which also has the effect of stiffening the ends of the fastener-strip,besidcs giving a bet ter finish to the article.
I am aware that it is not new, broadly, to make a box or tub fastener by inserting tacks or nails through opposite ends of a sheet-metal strip, and I make no claim-thereto but What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The tub or box fastener herein shown and described, having its doubled ends a a soldered down upon the body A of the strip over the heads of the tacks B B, as an improved article of manufacture,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of 'two witnesses.
WVILLIAM II. BLAKE, 2D.
