No. 791,135 3 Claims. (Cl. 311--2) This invention relates to furniture used within and around buildings of various kinds including homes, offices, and other habitable quarters and particularly to the structural and ornamental features which contribute both to the appearance and utility of such furniture.

The invention relates specifically to furniture of novel or unusual appearance and structure, and which is more or less rustic or casual and therefore appropriate for use in dens, trophy rooms, cellars, patios, camp cottages, swimming pools, and the like.

Furnishings determine to a large degree the nature of living quarters including the attractiveness and individuality thereof and they exert an influence upon the spirits and attitude of those present.

It is an object of the invention to provide relatively simple, inexpensive, and sturdy furniture, of attractive and unusual appearance, and susceptible of use in various areas and locations both indoors and out.

Another object of the invention is to provide furniture which can be easily produced, of readily available materials, and will serve multiple purposes including that of a support, a work surface, a container both for liquids or solids, and as a novel decorative article.

Afurther object of the invention is to provide furniture susceptible of adjustment or slight modification for the adaptation of the same to the use for which it is to be employed and in order that by such flexibility of design a maximum use and advantage to the owner can be obtained.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:

FIG. 1 is a perspective illustrating one application of the invention with the top omitted;

FIG. 2, an end elevation thereof and with the top in section;

FIG. 3, a vertical longitudinal section on the line 3--3 of FIG. 2;

FIG. 4, a section on the line 4-4 of FIG. 3;

FIG. 5, a side elevation of a modified type of structure; and

FIG. 6, a vertical section on the line 6-6 of FIG. 5.

With continued reference to the drawing an article of furniture in accordance with the present invention, as disclosed in FIGS. 1 to 4 of the drawing, comprises a support in the form of a table top 10, a series of legs 11, and an intermediate barrel or keg 1-2 serving as a bracing member.

The top may have a glass top 13 retained by a molding or rim and the table top may have a stepped opening 15 therethrough for the reception of a dual diameter plug 16 and a pin 17 for preventing its being withdrawn, such plug being provided to raise the glass top 13 sufficiently that it may be easily removed.

The table top 10 is mounted on the barrel or keg 12 by means of upper and lower coupling plates 18 having internally threaded sockets in which are received an externally threaded pipe section 20, the plates 18 being secured by fasteners 21 to the underside of the table top and the top of the barrel or keg.

In manufacturing the device the coupling plates are attached and the externally threaded member is threaded into the internally threaded socket of the lower coupling plate and then into the internally threaded socket of the upper coupling plate is threaded over such 3,007,756 Patented Nov. 7, 1951 pipe section 20. After the barrel or keg and the top are assembled the legs 11 are applied, each being secured in place by a pair of bolts and nuts 22, and a hook 23 is added held in place by a bolt or screw 24.

In the manufacture of the device, before the legs are secured in place they may be provided with rubber tips 25 so that the tip at the lower end increases the gripping of the floor on which the device is placed and the tips at the upper end also may serve to supoprt the table top 10.

The keg or barrel 12 may have a head 26 at one or both ends and with one of which provided. with

27 and 28, for receiving a spigot 29 and a plug 30 retained in place by means of an anchoring chain 31. The barrel or keg may have a drain plug 32 in its bottom With an attached retaining chain 33. The spigot 29 and the

30 and 32 are employed for ornamentation and when both heads of the barrel are in place for a utilitarian function. If desired, one or both of the heads 26 may be omitted and the device used as a holder or container for newspapers, magazines or other objects, in which event the bolts 22 may have their inner extremities covered with caps 34 so that they will not snag clothing and injure the arm.

In FIGS. 5 and 6 there is disclosed a table of a different character having a top 35, a keg 36 and legs 37. The keg in a manner similar to that in which the top 10 is which it is attached by bolts and

38 and 39, and with spacing sleeves 40 interposed between the legs of the keg about the bolts 39. The top 35 is mounted on the key in a manner similar to that in which the top 10 is mounted on the barrel 1 2 or in other words, by means of a pair of plates with internally threaded socket coupling members 41 connected by an externally threaded sleeve 42, the table top having an opening 43 through which and the sleeve 42 a measuring stick 44 extends into the keg 36 through the upper head 45 of the keg 36. if desired, rubber tips 46 may be applied on one or both ends of the legs 37.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that novel attractive articles of furniture are provided of great practical use and which are inexpensive although extremely desirable.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is illustrated in the drawing and described in the specification, but only as indicated in the accompanying claims.

What is claimed is:

1. An article of manufacture comprising a flat table top, a supporting structure for and beneath the same comprising a barrel, a plurality of spaced apart legs secured to the sides of said barrel, said barrel serving as a bracing and spacing member for the legs, the lower ends of said legs extending below the barrel and the upper ends of said legs extending upwardly with their tips in contact with the under side of said table top and means for adjustably and detachably holding said table top against the upper ends of said legs, said holding means comprising a fitting extending upwardly from the uppermost surface of said barrel, a fitting extending downwardly from the underside of the table top and a connector between said fittings for adjustably and detachably holding said top at the desired distance above said barrel and in contact with the upper ends of said legs.

An article of furniture comprising a. fiat table top, a supporting structure for and beneath the same compris ing a barrel, a plurality of spaced apart legs secured to the sides of said barrel, said barrel serving as a bracing and spacing member for the legs and being disposed horizontally between said legs with both ends exposed, the lower ends of said legs extending below the barrel and the upper ends of said legs extending upwardly with their tips in contact with the underside of said table top, and means for detachably holding said table top against the upper ends of said legs, said holding means comprising a fitting extending upwardly from the curved uppermost surface of said barrel, a fitting extending downwardly from the underside of the table top, a connector between said fittings for detachably holding said top at the desired distance above said barrel and in contact with the upper ends of said legs.

3. An article of furniture comprising a flat table top, a supporting structure for and beneath the same comprising a barrel, a plurality of spaced apart legs secured to the sides of said barrel, said barrel serving as a bracing and spacing member for the legs and being disposed vertically between said legs, the lower ends of said legs extending below the barrel and the upper ends of said legs extending upwardly with their tips in contact with the underside of said table top, and means for adjustably and detachably holding said table top against the upper ends of said legs, said holding means comprising a fitting extending upwardly from the flat upper surface of said barrel, a fitting extending downwardly from the underside of the table top, a connector between said fittings for adjustably and detachably holding said top at the desired distance above said barrel and in contact with the upper ends of said legs, .the top end of said barrel having an opening leading thereinto, the table top having an opening above and aligned with the barrel opening and a measuring stick removably located in said openings.
