I I} I I l i i WITNESS: ATTORNYEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE W. ELLIOTT, 0F GREENFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WALTER A.
GRAY, OF GREENFIELD, OHIO.
DISPLAY-RACK.-.
Application filed April 2,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE WV. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Display-Racks, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my )resent invention is the provision of a simple, durable inexpenslve and advantageous display rack that is susceptible of being shipped in a knocked down state and readily set up wlthout the assistance of skilled labor and is adapted to be manipulated so as to show off goods to excellent advantage and thereby promote the sale thereof.
Another object is the provision of a display rack capable of being built up unit by unit as conditions require.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof p Figure 1 is a broken side elevatlon of a" display rack constructed in accordance with my invention. 4
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary diame'trical section of the same, with some parts in elevation.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of amodification.
Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrative of another modification.
Similar numerals designate corresponding parts in Figs. 1 and 2 to which reference will first be made.
The shelves 1 of my novel rack may be of glass, wood or other appropriate material, and each is characterized by a central aperture 2.
In addition to the shelves 1 the rack comprises a base 3 of any desired material, the said base being preferably, though not necessarily, provided with feet 4:. Superimposed on and fixed at 5 to the base 3 is a base plate 6 into which is threaded the lower end of a tubular section 7, of gas pipe or other appropriate material. The said tubular section 7 is arranged under and supports a plate 8 upon which is superimposed the lowermost shelf 1. The said plate 8 is provided with a threaded aperture 9, and arranged in and extending above the plate 8 is the threaded end portion 10 of a rod member 11, said rod Specification of Letters Patent. Patented'Dec. 20, 1921,
1921. Serial No. 458,139.
portion 11 being preferably tubular and being socketed in the tubular section 7 as indicated. Surrounding the rod section 11 and superimposed upon the lower shelf 1 is a Washer 12 of felt or analogous material and threaded on the upper end of the rod section 11 is a cup 13 in which is an interior thread 14 for the engagement of the lower threaded end of the tubular section 15 that is interposed between the lower shelf 1 and the intermediate shelf 1. At its upper end the tubular section 15 rests under a second plate 8 1n which is threaded a second rod sectlon 11, which rod section 11 has its threadedportion 10 extended through the intermediate shelf and equipped with a felt washer 12 and a nut 13 similar with those before described. Threaded in the intermediate nut 13 and arranged under a plate 8 similar to those before 'describedis a third tubular section 7 in which is socketed a third rod section 11. \Vhen the said rod section 11 is the uppermost one as appears in Fig. 1, the nut 13 that is threaded on said rod section is provided with an upwardly extending stem 20, designed to carry in appropriate manner a price card 21 or the like. It will also be understood that between the nut 13 and the upper shelf 1 is interposed a felt washer 12 similar to those before described.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that each of the shelves 1 is clamped and strongly held between opposed clamping means on a rod section 11, and that each rod section 11 is removably arranged in a tubular section 7 below it. From this it follows that each shelf and its appurtenances are adapted to be handled as a unit, and that, therefore, the rack may be built up as high as is desirable, and this without the employment of skilled labor. It will also be apparent that the shelves 1 may be turned about their common axis for the display of goods to the best advantage. In this connection it will be apprcciated'that the intermediate tubular section 15 will turn with the lower shelf, and the upper tubular section 7 will turn with the intermediate shelf 1, so that goods propped against said tubu lar section as appears in Fig. 1 will be turned with the shelves. In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the lower and outer tubular section 7 is superimposed upon the base late 6, and the said base plate 6 is provi ed with a threaded aperture 6' for the engagement of a lower inner rod section 11 that is threaded at its lower end for engagement with the threaded aperture 6" and is provided at 30 with a diametrical aperture.
t will also be noticed that the outer tubular section 7 a is also provided with an aperture 31. These diametrical apertures 30 and 31 are provided in order that the tubular section '7 and the rod sect-ion 11 may be turned through the medium of a nail or the like in the connection and disconnection of the parts. At its upper end the outer tubular sect-ion 7 is arranged in threaded engagement with a plate 8, disposed under and fixedly connected to the lower shelf 1. The said shelf 1 is preferably of wood and is provided by preference with an upstanding marginal flange 1 to prevent the accidental displacement of goods. In the shelf 1 is a central aperture through which extends the intermediate tubular section 7 that is threaded at its lower end into the plate 8.
The before mentioned rod section 11 is carried through the lower and intermediate tubular sections 7 and to a point above the intermediate section 7 where it is threaded into a union arranged under the intermediate plate 8, which, in turn, is arranged under and fixed to the intermediate shelf 1. It will also be noticed that the intermediate tubular section 7 is provided with a diametrical aperture 31 for the purpose before described, and the upper portion of the rod section 11 is also provided with an upper aperture 30. Threaded at its lower end into the intermediate late 8 is the upper tubular section 7 W ich extends through an aperture in the intermediate shelf 1 and serves to receive a rod section 11 that is threaded at its lower end into the union 35. The said upper rod section 11 has its upper end arranged under the plate 8 of the upper shelf 1, and it also will be noticed that the plate 8 has a threaded aperture 8 to receive the lower threaded end of a rod 20, preferably of wood, and which rod 20 extends through a central aperture in the upper shelf 1 and is designed to carry in appropriate manner at its u per end a tag or card indicated by 21. n this modification it will be manifest that the rack is adapted to be assembled and disassembled without employment of skilled labor, and that the rack is also adapted to be built up as high as desirable by the addition of fresh units.
In the embodiments shown in Fig. 4 the shelf 1 is preferably of glass plate, felt washers 12* are arranged above and below the said glass plate; the upper washer being interposed between the shelf 1 and a lock nut 1 on the lower threaded portion of the intermediate tubular section 7.
In all of the modifications ofmy invention it will be apparent that the construction is characterized by simplicity and strength, and that in all of the embodiments is pre served the scheme of building up the rack unit by unit as high as desirable, according to the goods to be displayed.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:-
1. A display rack comprising an apertured shelf, outer tubular sections above and below the shelf, a plate below the shelf, and an inclosed rod section extending through the apertured shelf and threaded into the said plate, in combination with a member threaded on the inclosed rod section above the shelf to clamp the shelf against the plate.
2. In a display rack, the combination of spaced apertured shelves, plates disposed under the shelves and having threaded apertures coincident with the apertures of the shelves, outer tubular sections arranged with their upper ends under the plates, inner rod sections socketed in the outer tubular sections and threaded in the plates and extending above the shelves, washers on the shelves and around said rod sections, and nuts superimposed on the washers and threaded on the rod sections and having interiorly threaded portions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HORACE W. ELLIOTT.
