LIFTING ATTACHMENT FOR GLASS TABLE TOPS Filed July 14, 1948 Fig-.2. 7
Fig. 3.
Charles 0. Shel/man INVENTOR.
Patented Oct. 16, 1951' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LIFTING ATTACHMII ESTTSFOR GLASS TABLE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and use- :ful improvements in devices to facilitate lifting of glass table tops which are recessed in the tops ,of tables or other furniture.
An important object of the invention is to pro- 'vide a lifting attachment for the glass top which iis secured in its position under the table and :arrange for lifting one edge of the glass top to ;permit lifting thereof by the fingers of a person -when removing the glass top for the purpose of (cleaning the glass or the table.
A further object of the invention is to provide :an attachment of this character which is simple ;and practical in construction, efficient and reli- :able in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more :fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings iforming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer ito like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a table showing the lifting attachment in position thereon;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view of the table and lifting attachment secured thereto; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on a line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates a coffee table including a ,top 6 in which a glass top I is recessed substantially flush with the surface of the top 6.
In order to facilitate removal of the glass top 1 I provide a vertical rod or plunger 8 which is lfilidable in a tubular vertical guide 9 in top 6 --with the upper end of the rod engaging the under side of glass top I and with the lower end of rod -,;8 projecting downwardly below the top 6.
A lever or handle [0 is pivoted on a pin ll carried transversely in an inverted U-shaped bracket l2 secured to the under side of the top 6 by ,screws or the like 13.
The upper edge of handle l0, adjacent its pivoted end, is rounded to form a cam surface [4.
In the operation of the device the lever 10 is :normally supported in a substantially horizontal position, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings and with the cam edge I4 engaging the lower (end of rod or plunger 8.
Upon its downward movement of lever It the cam edge 14 will ride under rod or plunger 8 to cause a raising movement thereof whereby to lift the adjacent edge of said top 1 sufficiently to enable the fingers of a person to grip the raised edge of the glass top and thus remove the top from the table.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
The combination with a table of the type including a top having a recess therein and a removable glass plate in the recess, of a lift for the plate comprising a tubular guide mounted vertically in the top, the upper end of said guide being flush with the bottom of the recess and the lower end of said guide being flush with the under side of the top, an inverted U-shaped bracket mounted on said under side of the top in engagement with the guide and having an opening in its bight portion aligned therewith,'a rod slidable in the guide and the opening for elevating the glass plate, a cam pivotally mounted in the bracket and engaged beneath the rod for supporting and actuating same, and an operating lever integral with said cam.
