SELF-WAITING TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,269, dated March 24, 1903.
Application filed February 7, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN V. 'HAMMAOK, a citizen of the United States, residin g at'lhalia, in the county of Princess Anne and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Waiting Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention consists in certain improvements in the details of construction of self-waitingtables whereby a table of such character is provided which will be very convenient in use and easy to operate and will not materially shade the main table below, and thus be objectionable, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referringto the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a table embodying my said invention; Fig. 2, a central section through the upper portion thereof, and Fig. 3 a top plan showing a modified form of the serving-table.
The main table Ais of any desired form 2 5 round, square, or octagon-as shown being preferably of equal dimensions on the several sides. It is mounted on a suitable frame and legs, such as shown, or of any approved form. It is provided with a'centr'al perforation, and 0 on the under sidea plate 1) is secured to furnish the required 'stiifness and support and afiord a socket in which is mounted a vertical rod 1, the head being countersunk into said plate to prevent it from turning. Said tion in said table to the height desired and has a screw-threadedtop. On the top of said table is a sleeve or hollow standard 2, mounted around said rod, in the top of which is formed 40 half a ball-race for the balls 3, on which the serving-table B is mounted. Said servingtahle B is formed with a solid center and several radial arms B, preferably in the form of a star, the arms or points being adapted to serve as rests for the dishes which are to contain the articles toube served. The spaces between the arms orpoints may be filled with plates of glass 19*, held in place by a band b as shown in Fig. 4, to. make a Wider surface Serial No. 93,013. (No model.)
the table below. Said table is provided with a metal ring 6 on its lower side, having an aunular groove in its face, which serves as a bearing for the balls 4 in the ball-race of standard 2. It is also provided with a similar ring I) on its top surface, having an annular groove in its face, which constitutes part of a ball-race for the balls 4:. Said table is centrally perforated and mounted on the rod 1 and is secured thereon by a not 5, mounted on the screw-threaded upper end of said rod, and formed with an annular groove in its lower face, which constitutes the other half of the ball-race for the balls 4. By this means said table is supported and adapted to turn on ball-bearings both above and below, which renders its operation very easy and its support very rigid. On the top of nut 5 is formed or mounted a small shelf 6,which may be used for the support of a lamp, a vase of flowers, or
any ornament or other article desired. By this arrangement the serving-table will not materially interfere with the use of the table below by making the space beneath it dark, and a very convenient table for the purpose is provided.
In providing the table with a cloth it will -be necessary to make a central aperture in said cloth of the size of the rod 1, when it may be put in place by first removing the serving-table B and other parts by taking ofi the nut 5, when the cloth can be put in place and said parts replaced, as will be readily understood.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a self-waiting table, the combination, of the main table-top, a central pivot-and-tie rod extending up through said table-top, a 0
hollow supporting standard having a large base and top and mounted around said central rod with its base resting upon said table-top,
the serving-table mounted to rest upon the top'of said hollow standard and supported thereon and adapted to rotate around said central rod, and a nut on the top of said rod for securing the several parts together, said several parts being separable by removing said nut, whereby they may be removed for 10s the purpose of placing a table-cover upon or removing it from the main table-top, substantially as set forth.
2. In a self-waiting table, the combination, of the main table-top, the central rod extending up through said table-top, a hollow supporting-standard with wide base and top surrounding-said central rod and resting upon said table-top, the serving-table mounted to rest upon the top of said standard and revolve around said central rod, ball-races in the top of said standard and adjacent face of said serving-table, balls mounted in said ball-races, the-nut on'the top of said rod for securing the parts together, ball-races in the lower face of said nut and adjacent face of said serving-table, and balls mounted in said ball-races, the several parts being separable by removing said nut, substantially as set forth. I
3. In aself-waiting table, the combination, of the main table-top, a central rod or post extending up through said table-top, a 1101- low standard mounted around said rod and to rest upon said top,the revolving star-shaped serving table mounted on the top of said standard above said main table top, said serving-table being formed with a central surface of sufficient size to support dishes to be placed thereon and having radial tapered arms projecting from said central portion, the
spaces between said arms being filled with.
