Description

1961 E. J. DOEHLER HOLDER FOR LIDS OR CAN COVERS Filed March 22, 1961 I u n I I u IN V EN TOR. W 2% BY AT T ORNEYS United States Patent Ollice 3,006,497 Patented Oct. 31, 1961 3,006,497 HOLDER FOR LIDS R CAN COVERS Emil J. Doehler, 58 Dundee St., Buffalo, N.Y. Filed Mar. 22, 1961, Ser. No. 97,585 7 Claims. (Cl. 220-18) This invention relates to means for holding and protectmg covers or lids of cans or receptacles, such for example as garbage cans, when the 'covers or lids are removed therefrom.
Whenever garbage is collected, for example by a municipality, the lids are removed from the cans and frequently they are roughly handled and thrown around and bent or otherwise damaged so that they cannot be readily replaced on the cans.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide means for mounting a can cover in a more or less permanent position in such a manner that it will be out of the way when removed from the can and positioned Where it is not apt to be damaged and where it is readily replaceable on the can. Another object is to provide a mounting for can lids or covers in a convenient location and providing guide means for placing the can in correct relation to the cover so that the cover can be easily replaced correctly on a can. It is also an object of this invention to provide a cover holder of this type which is of simplified construction and which can be easily applied to a lid or cover and to a building or other support.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example one embodiment of my invention:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation of a can or container having a lid or cover positioned thereon and secured to a holder which facilitates the removal of the cover from the can and the supporting of the cover in convenient and out of the way position when removed from the can.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view thereof approximately as seen from line 2-2, FIG. 1.
FIGS. 3 and 4 are sectional elevations of the holder on lines 3-3 and 44, respectively of FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view thereof on line 55, FIG. 1. a
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary sectional elevation thereof on line 66, FIG. 2.
In the construction illustrated 7 represents a can or container of any suitable type, such as a garbage or trash can having a cover 8, and 9 represents an upright support, such for example as a wall of a building, to which the cover may be attached. The cover is of the type which fits over the top edge of the can and may be of any suitable construction, and is preferably provided with a handle 10 by means of which the cover can be removed from or placed on the can or container. The lid is made of sheet metal or other material and has the usual reinforcing bead 11 at the edge thereof.
In accordance with my invention I provide a holder for hinging or pivoting the cover on the building or support 9. For this purpose I preferably provide a holder which includes an upright plate 12 which may be secured to the building or other support in any suitable or usual manner, for example by means of screws or other fasteners 14. This plate 12 supports an outwardly extending shelf or ledge 15 which may be in the form of another plate having openings 16 therein and having a rear edge which abuts against the upright plate 12 and which has projections which extend into openings 13 of the plate 12 to hold the shelf from shifting laterally relatively to the plate. The rear edge of the shelf extends over a knob or projection 17 of the upright plate 12 and these two parts of the holder may be connected by any suitable means, such for example, as a pin 18. Also the ledge or shelf 15 is supported from the plate 12 by a brace 20 which may be in the form of a sheet metal strip having one end formed for securing to the upright plate 12, for example by means of a rivet 21 and having the lower end bent horizontally for securing to the shelf or ledge 15 by means of rivets 22.
A hinge connection is provided between the shelf and the cover 8. For example a part of this hinge may be formed by the brace or strap 20, and for this purpose the end of the brace may be provided with a turned over edge 24 forming a part of the hinge.
The other part of the hinge is formed by means of another metal strap 25 which is shaped to be secured to the lid 8, and also to be hinged to the brace member 20. The hinge connection may be of any suitable type. For example the parts 20 and 25 may be provided with turned over parts 28 extending into alignment with each other and connected by means of a hinge pin 30. It will con sequently be evident that this hinge supports the lid 8 when positioned over the container 7 as shown in FIG. 1 and also when the lid is swung about the hinge upwardly beyond its dead center position it will rest against the building or support so that it will be held by gravity in an open position, as indicated by broken lines in FIG. 1.
The ledge or shelf 15 is provided on the outer edge thereof with a curve or arc-shaped surface 32 which is formed to fit against the upper edge of the can 7. Con sequently when the can has been emptied and it is desired to again place the same in position to be covered, the can is supported in correct relation to the cover by the curved edge 32 of the ledge or shelf 15. Consequently when the cover is then swung from its upper position it will fit accurately on the container 7.
The hinge member or strap 25 may be secured to the lid or cover in any desired manner and preferably it is constructed so that it can be readily applied to the cover by a householder or other person Without requiring mechanical skill. For this purpose the strap or hinge member 25 is provided with an extension 35 which is bent around in such a manner as to extend into contact with or into close proximity to the interior surface of the cover or lid 8 and around the bead 11 thereof. This extension is sufliciently flexible to permit a portion of the bead and cover to be inserted between the extension or clip 35 and the body portion of the strap 25. When correctly positioned in this manner, the cover and strap 25 may be connected by means of a bolt 36 or other fastening device. To further ensure the maintaining of the cover in correct relation to the strap 25, I provide at opposite sides of the strap flanges or projections 38 which extend into gripping engagement with the flange of the cover and which further serve to hold the cover and strap 25 in correct relation to each other.
It is also desirable to provide means for supporting the lid approximately in horizontal position when the can is removed. For this purpose I provide the ledge or shelf 15 adjacent to the opposite sides thereof with upwardly extending lugs or projections 40 on which the edge of the cover may rest independently of the container when the cover is in horizontal position, as shown in FIG. 6.
By means of the construction described the garbage can lid will be held on the support 9 without damage. By means of the cover support device the container can be readily positioned in correct relation to the cover so that when the cover is lowered it will fit correctly on the container. When the container is removed, the cover will be in an upright position out of the way and not apt to be damaged or lost.
It will be understood that various changes in the details, materials and arrangements of parts, which have been herein described and illustrated in order to explain the nature of the invention, may be made by those skilled e 1. A holder for a container cover, said holder includ-' ing an upright plate adapted to be secured to a support, an outwardly extending plate secured in fixed relation to said upright plate, a hinge having a part supported on said outwardly extending plate and a part secured to said cover, said outwardly extending plate having its outer edge shaped to conform to the contour of the upper portion of a container to guide the same into correct relation to said holder to receive the cover.
