(Cl. 2-144) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in neckties and i-t is primarily the objectV of the invention to provide la novel device of this character wherein the improved necktie is worn in combination with a cord, or a band, which encircles the neck of the wearer.

It is also an object of this invention to provide a novel device of this character wherein the necktie is provided with a V-shaped aperture in one end portion through which the opposite end portion is inserted to give the appearance of a necktie of the four-in-hand type.

Another object of the invention is to provide a novel device wherein the necktie is folded upon itself to provide an upper end portion and a lower end portion of substant-ially the same length, the lower end portion being provided with a V-shaped slit, and which slit is fo-r the purpose of forming a tongue portion which can be moved rearwardly to provide an opening permitting the upper end portion to be inserted and drawn through the opening after the necktie has been combined with la cord, or band, about the wearers neck, the original lower end portion will now overlie a major portion of the upper end portion inserted therethrough, the remaining portion of the upper end portion being exposed within the contines of the opening giving the appearance of a knot of the four-inhand type without forming a knot therewith.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a necktie that can be folded with one end upon the other, a V-shaped slit in one-half portion thereof and the opposite end inserted therethrough, and with saw teeth type notches formed in the opposite edges of the portion of the necktie inserted through the slit, to embrace the lower portion of the necktie at the upper and widest part of the V-shaped slit.

Further, it is an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character which will be simple in construction, the necktie produced from one or more pieces of plastic, or leather, or other kindred materials secured together to form a continuous strip, eiicient and advantageous in practice and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a necktie consisting of a necktie of the class described consisting of inner and outer end portions folded and arranged one upon the other when the tie is in use, the outer end portion of the tie having a V-shaped slit providing an opening extending therethrough, said opening forming a V-shaped passage opening through both surfaces of said outer end portion when the portion of the necktie within the contines of the slit is pushed rearwardly, and a major pont-ion of the inner end portion of the tie being adapted to pass inwardly through said opening and leaving a V- shaped minor portion thereof exposed adjacent said opening at the outer surface of the outer end portion of the necktie.

With the Iabove and other objects in View the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings which illustrate practical embodiments of the invention, l@ designates the folded necktie in combination with a cord, or band i2, which encircles the neck of the wearer when worn. Said band 12 can be of endless design, or it can embody free ends whichmay be tied together or secured in any desired manner. The necktie lil may be constructed of a single piece of material I4, such as plastic material, leatherette material, suitable fabrics, and the like, having both surfaces nished, as shown by FIGURES 3 and 4. The necktie may be made of leather, as shown by FIGURES 5, 6 and 7 where the top surfaces l5 of the skin of animals providing the leather is tanned, and made smooth leaving the lower surfaces 16 rough and unchanged.

The upper end portion I3 of the one-piece blank of the necktie, as shown in FIGURES 3 and 4 embodies the top surface 19 and lower surface 20; the lower end portion 22 of the blank embodies a top surface 23 and a lower surface 24. A substantially V-shaped slit 25 is provided in the lower portion of the blank a short distance below the fold line 26. A pair of saw teeth type notches 27 and 2nd are provided in the upper end portion i8 of the blank of the necktie a short distance above the fold line 26. The portion of the blank within the contines of the substantially V-shaped slit forming a tongue 3d, and whenever said tongue 30 is pressed from the plane in which the blank is arranged, the displaced tongue effects an aperture, or opening 3l of V-shaped conhguration.

The necktie 1 0-A may be constructed of leather, as shown by FIGURES 5, 6 and 7. The upper end portion of the necktie being composed of a one-piece of leather 32, the lower end thereof composed of one-piece of leather 33. With leather the pieces have fa smooth side 15 and a rough side 16. Therefore, end portions of the leather pieces with the rough surfaces 16 must be secured together by glue 35, or secured in any suitable manner as shown by FIGURE 6, whereby both the upper surfaces of the folded necktie will be upright when folded upon each other as shown by FIGURE 7. rthe necktie iti-A embodies the same V-sh-aped slit 25, tongue 3i) and opening 31 as shown with the one-piece necktie. The leather two-piece necktie also embodies therein the same saw teeth type notches 27 and 28 as shown by the one-piece necktie. These notches 27 and 28 are so arranged that when a major portion of the upper portion of the tie is inserted and drawn through the opening 31, the two saw teeth type notches will keep the portion 13 of the tie representing a four-in-hand knot from sliding down into the opening formed by the V-slit and becomingflat;

. and since the lateral distance D between the notches 27 and 28 is greater than the width W at the base of the tongue 30, said portion 13 will bulge outwardly.

By examination of the drawing, shown by FIGURE 7, the necktie lll-A constructed of two pieces of leather, the smooth surface 15 of the upper and lower portions of the necktie are clearly shown. The upper layer 32 has been inserted and drawn through the aperture 31 of layer 33 leaving `a bulging portion 13 of the layer 32 between the notches 27 and 23 within the contines of the V-shaped slit 25.

In the use of a necktie having this improvement therein, after the tie has been assembled with a band about the wearers neck and folded, as shown in FIGURES l, Z and 7, the bulging portion 13 of the one piece of the necktie between the notches 27 and 28 along the sides thereof gives the `appearance of a four-in-hand knot without a knot being tied, presenting a new and novel type of necktie and suitable for long wear since the necktie portions are not folded over, and over, causing the crushing and wrinkling of the tie material.

By this type of necktie a proper effect of the tie is always assured.

Accordingly, the present invention provides a novel wearing apparel or neckwear construction which can be applied to the wearer furnishing an article of wearing apparel having a four-in-hand appearance, and providing a new construction of clothing novelty having a simplified design.

In the foregoing description, certain terms have been used for brevity, clearness and understanding; but no unnecessary limitations are to be implied therefrom beyond the requirements of the prior art, because such words are utilized for descriptive purposes herein and not for the purpose of limitation and are intended to be broadly construed.

Moreover, the embodiment of the improved neckwear construction illustrated and described is by way of example and the scope of the present invention is not limited to the exact details of construction of the various parts described or illustrated.

Having now described the features of the invention, the construction of a preferred embodiment thereof, and the new and useful results obtained thereby; the new and useful necktie, constructions, arrangements, combinations, and reasonable mechanical equivalents thereof, not obvious to those skilled in the art, are set forth in the -appended claims.

l claim as my invention:

l. A necktie comprised of inner and outer end portions folded and arranged one upon the other when the tie is in use, the outer end portion of the tie having a V-shaped slit providing yan opening extending therethrough, said opening `forming a V-shaped passage opening through both surfaces of said outer end portion when the portion of the necktie within the confines of the slit is pushed rearwardly, and a major portion of the inner end portion of the tie being adapted to pass inwardly through said opening and leaving a V-shaped minor portion thereof exposed adjacent said opening at the outer surface of the outer end portion of the necktie.

2. A necktie comprised of inner and outer end portions folded and arranged one upon the other when the tie is in use, the outer end portion of the tie having a V- shaped slit providing an opening extending therethrough, said opening forming a V-shaped passage opening through both surfaces of said outer end portion when the portion of the necktie within the confines of the slit is pushed rearwardly, and a major portion of the inner end portion of the tie being adapted to pass inwardly through said opening and yieaving a V-shaped minor portion thereof exposed adjacent said opening `at the outer surface of the outer end portion of the necktie, said V-shaped passage opening being arranged between the folded mid-section of the necktie .and the free end of said outer end portion.

A necktie comprised of inner and outer end portions folded and arranged one upon the other when the tie is in use, the outer end portion of the tie having a V-shaped slit providing an opening extending therethrough, said opening forming a V-shaped passage opening through both surfaces of said outer end portion when the portion of the necktie within the confines of the slit is pushed rearwardly, and a major portion of the inner end portion of the tie being adapted to pass inwardly through said opening and leaving a V-shaped minor portion thereof exposed adjacent said opening at the outer surface of the outer end portion of the necktie, said V- shaped opening being arranged close to the folded midsection of the necktie and between it and the free end of said outer end portion yand notches in the edge portion of the inner end portion engaging the walls of said slit to retain said inner end portion against relative displacement.

A necktie comprised of inner and outer end portions folded and arranged yone upon the other when the tie is in use, the outer end portion of the tie having a V-shaped slit providing an opening extending therethrough, said opening forming a V-shaped passage opening through both surfaces of said outer end portion when the portion of the necktie within the confines of the slit is pushed rearwardly, and a major portion of the inner end portion of the tie being adapted to pass inwardly through said opening and leaving a V-shaped minor portion thereof exposed adjacent said opening at the outer surface of the outer end portion of the necktie, said V -shaped opening being arranged close to the folded mid-section of the necktie and between it and the free end of said outer end portion and notches located in the edge portion of the inner end portion of the necktie for engaging the boundary wall of said opening to effect said inner end portion between the notches to bulge outwardly and retain said inner end portion against relative displacement.

A rectangular shaped necktie formed of two rectangular pieces of leather with smooth and rough side surfaces, one end of each piece having the rough side surfaces secured togethcr forming a continuous one piece blank, one end portion of which is provided with a V-shaped slit effecting a V-shaped opening through ywhich the other end portion of the tie is adapted to be threaded from the upper side surface of the first named end portion of the necktie to the other side surface thereof leaving a portion of the second named portion outside the opening so as to expose a smooth portion of the second named end portion of the necktie between the boundaries of said V-shaped slit to give the appearance of a fourin-hand knot.

6. A leather necktie having inner and outer end portions with smooth outer side surfaces and rough under side surfaces, the outer end portion having a V-shaped slit arranged therein effecting a V-shaped opening to form a passage therethrough the smooth front and rough rear side surfaces of said outer end portion, and the inner end portion of the tie being adapted to pass through said passage leaving a portion thereof between the boundaries of the opening and effecting the appearance of a V-shaped knot, and the boundary wall of said opening retaining said end portions against relative displacement when the tie is in use.

In an improved necktie to be worn in combination with a band encircling the neck of a wearer, comprising a blank of material with first and second end portions, the first end portion folded upon the second end portion when worn by the wearer, the second end portion having a V-shaped slit therein with the widest part thereof arranged slightly below the fold line in the mid-section of the necktie, the first end portion so located when worn by the wearer that the free end thereof extends through the opening formed by said V-shaped slit and extends below and juxtaposed the free end of said second end portion, whereby the section of the first end portion projecting above and adjacent said V-shaped slit will give the appearance of a V-shaped four-in-hand knot.

8. An improved necktie to be worn in combination with a band encircling the neck of a wearer, comprising a single piece of material, the blank said material being of substantially rectangular configuration and having first and second end portions, the first end portion folded upon the second end portion when Worn by the wearer, the second end portion having a V-shaped slit therein with the widest part thereof arranged slightly below the fold line in the mid-section of the necktie, the first end portion so located when worn by the wearer that the free end thereof extends through the opening formed by said V-shaped slit and extends below and juxtaposed the free end of said second end portion, whereby the section of the first end portion projecting Iabove and adjacent said V-sh-apcd slit will give the appearance of a V-shaped fourin-hand knot.

9. An improved necktie Ito be worn in combination with a band encircling the neck of a wearer, comprising two pieces of material, the two pieces of said material having an end portion of each secured together to form a continuous blank of material with first and second end portions, the first end portion folded upon the second end portion when worn by the wearer, the second end portion having a V-shaped slit therein with the widest part thereof arranged slightly below the fold line in the mid-section of the necktie, the first end portion so located when worn by the wearer that the free end thereof extends through the opening formed by said V-shaped slit and extends below and juxtaposed the free end of said second end portion, whereby the smooth section of the first end portion projecting above and `adjacent said V-shaped slit will give the appearance of a smooth surfaced four-inhand knot.

10. As a new article of manufacture, 'a necktie formed of a single piece of material, the blank portion of the material being substantially rectangular in configuration, the end portions of the necktie being folded one upon the other when worn by the wearer, the first end portion having a V-shaped aperture therein adjacent the fold line in the mid-section of the tie, the opposite end portion being inserted and drawn through said V-shaped aperture with the ends of the tie in juxtaposed relation, a suitable portion of the necktie extending within the confines of the V-shaped aperture forming a bulged portion representing a V-shaped knot,

As a new article of manufacture, a necktie formed of two rectangular pieces of leather, the two pieces of leather each having a smooth and rough side thereof, the two pieces of leather having one end of each secured together to form a continuous rectangular shaped strip, the continuous strip forming a necktie blank with two free end portions, the necktie when worn by the wearer being folded one end portion upon the other, the first end portion having a V-shaped aperture therein adjacent the fold line in the mid-section of the necktie, the opposite end portion being inserted and drawn through said V- shaped aperture with the ends of the tie in juxtaposed relation, a suitable portion of the leather necktie extending within the confines of the aperture formed by the V- shaped slit and effecting a bulged portion representing a smooth surfaced V-shaped leather four-in-hand knot.

12. As a new article of manufacture, a necktie formed of two rectangular pieces of leather, each piece having smooth and rough outer surfaces, the rough surfaces at one end of each leather piece secured together to form one continuous leather necktie blank of rectangular configuration, the smooth outer surface of the lower end of the necktie arranged outwardly when worn by the wearer, the upper end of the necktie folded upon the lower end with the smooth side outwardly, the lower portion of the necktie blank having a V-shape slit therein with the widest part thereof located slightly below the fold line in the mid-section of the necktie, the upper end portion of the necktie blank having a notch arranged in each of the two edge portions thereof, opposite each other, and slightly above said fold line. the distance between said notches being greater than the distance between the widest part of said V-shaped slit, the upper `end of the necktie so located when worn by the wearer that the free end thereof extends through the V-shaped aperture formed by said V-shaped slit and extends below and juxtaposed the free end of said lower portion, whereby the exposed section of the upper end of the necktie prevented from extending through `said V-shaped opening by said notches, is caused to eect a V-shaped section which bulge upwardly since the lateral distance across the tie between the notches is greater than the distance across the widest part of the V-shaped opening and thereby giving the appearance of a V-shaped four-in-hand knot.

13. As a new article of manufacture, a necktie of rectangular configuration with parallel sides and free end portions of the same width, there being a V-shaped slit formed in the one end portion of said necktie providing an opening located near the mid-section thereof for the accommodation of a notched side portion thereof located slightly away from said slit and toward the opposite end of the necktie, said notched portion being of greater width than the widest part of said V-shaped slit and said opening, which opening permits the wider portion of the tie to pass therethrough and leaving the notched portion of the necktie to bulge outwardly with a V-shaped configuration giving the appearance of a four-in-hand knot.

14. As a new article of manufacture, a necktie formed of two rectangular pieces of leather, each piece having smooth and rough outer surfaces, the rough surfaces at one end of each leather piece secured together to form one continuous leather necktie blank of rectangular configuration, the smooth outer surface of the lower end of the necktie arranged outwardly when worn by the wearer, the upper end of the necktie folded upon the lower end with the smooth side outwardly, the lower portion of the necktie blank having a slit therein, the upper end of the necktie so located when worn by the wearer that the free end thereof extends through the aperture formed by said slit and extends adjacent the free end of said lower portion.
