Description

(ModeL) J. E. A. MGALLISTER.
TOY.
S 3 M n M W ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES JAMES E. A. MOALLISTEB,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,097, dated June 10, 1884.
Application filed February 13, 1884. (Morleh) To all whom it 11710111] concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. A. MGAL- LISTER, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a 113w and Improved Toy, of which the following is thrown against headed pegs held in apertures in'a board. If the ball strikes apeg, the head enters the ball and the peg is withdrawn from its aperture in the board.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all,the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my new toy. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation ofthe board fo'r'holding the pegs on the line .00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is aside view ofthe ball, showing, it closed. Fig. 4. is a side view of the same, showing it opened. Fig. 5 is across-sectional elevation of the same, showing itholding a peg. a
e A board, A, having a slightlyinclined top, is provided with a series of apertures, B, on the top for receiving pins or pegs 0, having ballheads 0. A ball, D, is formed of two semispherical sections,D, hinged to each other and cut away to form an opening, E, diametrically opposite the joint. The ball is provided with a circumferential groove, F, in which an annular spring or rubber, G, is held, which presses the sections D together. A spiral spring, H,
fastened to a cord or an india-ru'bber band or strand, is secured to the ball at thej oint, and at the opposite end the cord is provided with a ring, J or loops, which can be passed over the finger. The ball is thrown at the board A, and is immediately drawn back in the hand by the elastic string. If the ball strikes one of the ball-heads O,the sections of the ball are forced apart by the ball-head and grasp it, thereby withdrawing the corresponding peg or pin when the ball is drawn back into the hand by the elastic band. The ball is thrown successively until one or all of the pins or pegs are withdrawn from the apertures in the board A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The ball D, formed of two hollow semispherical sections hinged to each other, provided opposite the hinge with an opening, and pressed against each other by a spring or elasas herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the ball D, formed of two semi-spherical hollow sections hinged to each other and pressed together bya spring or elastic band, 'and having an opening opposite the hinge, of an elastic string secured to the ball at the joint or hinge, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the hollow semispherical sections D, each having a groove, F, and cutaway to form an opening, E, of the 6o tic band surrounding the ball, substantially spring or elastic band G in the grooves, anda hinge uniting the two sections, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with a hollow ball formed of two hinged and spring-pressed sections, provided with an elastic cord at its hinge or joint, of the board A, provided with apertures, B, and the pins 0, provided with heads G, substantially as herein shown and described.
