SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,166, dated May 27, 1884-..
` Application nica March 12, 1884. (No man.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RIcIIARn M. RocxEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nora, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combined Milk-Cooler and Refrigerator, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a combined refrigerator and milk-cooler; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, and effective in use for cooling milk and preserving perishable articles.
With these ends in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and com binations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, the doors being opened for the reception ofthe milkcans and other arti- Fig. 3 is alongitudinal section.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to corresponding parts in the figures, A represents a box or casing constructed, preferably, of wood, and made substantially rectangular in form. This box or casing Amay be provided at any suitable point upon its sides or ends with a door, B, and is provided with a hinged cover, C, having strips a.
D represents an inner casing, which is constructed of thin sheet metal, the upper edges being bent at an angle upon the top edges of the casing A, and secured thereon by strips Z). This metal casing D is so arranged as to leave a space, c, between itself and the casing A, to allow of the free circulation of air, and to keep the inner casing from contact with the outer air, thus rendering it much easier to cool and keep cool the same. The side of the casing D, at the point where the door B is located, is provided with an opening, d, to the sides of which is secured a sheet-metal box or casing, C', the front end of which is opened, so that access maybe had to the samebymeans of the door B, the casing being situated so that its bodyportion is entirely within the casing D.
To the under side of the hinged cover C is provided a sheet-metal lining, e, which is creased or formed with longitudinal depressions or grooves f, which register with openings g, formed in the sides of the strips a, in order that the air may freely circulate above the cans which are to be placed Within the casing D, thus carrying off any odors that may arise from the milk.
E represents an inlet tube or pipe, which is arranged upon the upper end side of the casing, and through which water may be introduced from a hydrant or pump by means of a pIpe.
F represents the outlet-pipe, which is .arranged upon the lower end side of the casing opposite the inlettube, and communicating with any suitable waste-pipe.
In the application of my improvement the water-tight cans for containing the milk are placed within the casing D, and the water fed directly thereto through the inlet-pipe. In using the same for the preservation of vegetables, meats, Snc., the same are placed within the box C', and as this box is within the casing D, are subjected to the cooling action of the water. It Will therefore be seen that my improvement is applicable for cooling milk, and preserving perishable articles of food, and that its construction is simple and durable.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a combined milk-cooler and refrigerator, the combination, with an outer box or casing, of an inner easing constructed of thin sheet metal, and arranged within the outer casing to form an air-space, and a box or casing arranged upon the inner side of the inner casing, access being had thereto by means of an opening in the side of said casing, and a door for closing the same, substantially as set forth.
2. In a combined milk-cooler and refrigerator, the combination, with an outer and an inner casing, of a hinged cover having a lining of sheet metal provided with longitudinal grooves or recesses, and openings in the sides of the cover communicating therewith, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a combined milk-cooler and refrigerator, the combination of an outer and an inner casing, a box or casing secured therein,
ICO
an opening in the side of the inner easing, a In testimony that I claim the foregoing as door communicating With said boX, inlet and my own I have hereto affixed my signature in outlet tubes suitably arranged, and a hinged presenee of tWo witnesses.
cover having a lining of sheet metal provided RICHARD M. HOCKEY. with longitudinal grooves, the sides of the Witnesses: v cover having openings registering With said ALPHONSO E. RICKER,
grooves, substantially as set forth. i, MYRON II. BURR.
