Description

(No Model.)
J. SCHERLING.
PAD PASTENINGTOR HORSE GOLLARS.
Patented'May 13, 1-884.
JOHN SOHERLING, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO L. D. RANDALL 8t 00., OF SAME PLACE.
PAD-FASTENING FOR HORSE -COLLARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,626, dated May '13, 1884.
Application filed March :1, 1884.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN .SOHERLING, of Dubuque, in the State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastening Pads to HorseCollars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to horse-collars; and it consists in the special construction of a corn bined wire safety pin and hook for fastening the pads to the collars, the same device being also useful for attaching pads to other parts of a harness.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows a perspective view of the invention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent modifications. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a part of the collar with the fastening applied thereto. Fig. 5 is a similar View of the collar and pad with one of the fastenings in place.
Heretofore these pads have been held to the collar by means of clips of sheet metal riveted or permanently attached to the pad and adapt- .ed to clasp a collar.
The preferred form of the safety pin and hook is shown clearly in Fig. 1. It is madeentirely of steel or other elastic wire, curved in the form of bows b b, connected by a continuous part at a. One of the bows b is continued to form a pin, 6, which catches into a hook, f, on the end of the other bow b. To
give proper elasticity to the pin, a loop, (I, is formed at its junction with the end of the bow. The pin serves to connect the devices to the (No model.)
pad, beingattached thereto by passing the pin through the pad or the covering of the pad in the ordinary manner, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
These fastening devices may be modified, as shown at e and e? of Figs. 2 and 3. All the forms shown are readily attachable and detachable, and may be shifted from one place to another on the collar. It is attached to the collar in the manner aforesaid, with the bows b b tightly clamping over the collar-rim B, as shown in Fig. 5.
The safety-pin may be very cheaply made, and is easily and conveniently applicable to the pad and collar, and at the same time is adjustable thereon.
I claim as my invention 1. The described safety pin and hook, formed of wire, consisting of the bows b b and the part a, connecting the bows with suitable integral devices for attachment to the collars formed upon the ends of the bows, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the pad A and the collar B, a safety pin and hook, consisting of the bowsb b a, formed of wires, the pins 6, and the hook f, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificationv in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN SOI-IERLING.
