SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. zeaosadteu May 6; 18'84.
Appnetion ined Jufy 27, 1883. (No model.)
@ZZ whom, t VVmay"concern,: Be it known vthat we', H ARvEY A HoLLo- MAN and WILLIAM R. GREEN, both of Kingston, in the county of Huntvand'State of Texas,
have invented a new and Improved Picture-l Case for -Tombstons, of which -th'e following is a full, clear, andpeXact description.
Reference is to be hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in o which similar letters of reference indicate cor'- responding parts in all the figures. l Figure 1 shows in front elevation our new and improved tombstone case or frame as it appears when setF in theitombstone, and the.
5 lid or door of thecase closed. Fig. 2is a sectional elevation of the same, takenv on the line x fr of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken on the line g/ g/ of Fig. l.
This invention relates to the general cono struction of the frame or case A, and to the method of ,securing the case inthe tombstone B. f The tombstone B isl first recessed, as shown at B', atthe spot where it is desired to have the case AJ placed, the Vrecess `B being 5 made of such size and form as to receive the case A, so that its outer surfacewill stand iiush with the face of the stone B, as shown in Fig. 3. Iii-the-side'surfaces of the recess B are formed in the stone B the grooves a a, and
the recess B', the sprue.- holes b b, through which the metal or cement d d may be poured, for holding the the recess B. Y 5 The case or frame A is cast of any suitable metal in box form, with thesurrounding iianges c'c, and with the ledge or jambe, againstwhich the flange c2 of the lid or door C is adapted to shut, asshown in Figfl3.
4o The door or lid C is also cast of suitable metal,
door C, as shown. Y
For furnishing-a hold for the metal or cementd d upon the case or frame A, for holding -the spaces formed by hollowing out the said case or framerAin place inv fectly protect theA picture or memento, and
the frame inthe recess B, vthe side surfaces, c c', of the case A are grooved or hollowed out, as shown in` Figs. 2 and 3, and the lower edge of the flange c' of the case or frame A is cutaway, as shown at h h, to admit the molten metalor cement from the spruefholes b b into surfaces c c', and also into the grooves c a, so that when the case or frame A is placed in Ythe recess B', andl molten metalor cement is cast around the case or frame,byV cooling in the grooves a' and concaves a', it will effectually lock the case in the recess B in the stone B.
j represents the memento or picturephotograph or other picture-of the person deceased. The memento or picture] is placedin the case or frame A upon the cushion i, which protects the picture from the metal back of the case A. Over the picture or memento j is placed the glass k, which isfheld in place, preferably, by the strips z" c" Vof putty. Upon the inner.sur face of the door orrlid C is placed thecush' ion Z, which protects the glass 7c from being broken by the lid or door C, and when the'lid or door G is closed effectually excludes the light from the picture onmemento. The door or lid C may be provided with anysuitable lock operated by a key, by which the door or lid may be securely locked, if desired.
Constructed in this manner` it will be seen that the case is cheap and strong, and will perthat when in place' in the tombstone its outer surface will stand iiush withthe outer surface of the stone, and by securing the case or frame in the stone by means of the metalfor cement d, cast around the case, it kwill beseen that the case cannot be removed from the stone without breaking the stone, so that there will be no dangerof the memento or picture being meddled with' or taken out ofthe case or frame.
- Ve do not Vabandonor dedicate to the public any patentable feature set forth herein and not hereinafter claimed, but reserve the right to claim the same, either in a reissue of any patent that maybe granted upon this application or in other applications for Letters c c', of which the latter is out away at lr, and 1o Patent that we may mnke. the grooved side surfaces, a a', whereby the Having thus described our invention, what ease may be cemented in thestone, as dewe ela'iin :is new, and desire to secure by Let scribed.
