UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB KLAR, OF RODNEY, MISSISSIPPI.
DESK.
SPEQIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,940, dated April 29, 1884.
' Application filed October 10, 1883. (Model.)
justing the same vertically to suit the requirements of persons of different heights, and for sitting or standing at the desk or table, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a verticallyadjustable desk, with top broken off, arranged in accordance with-my invention, and being elevated for use by a person standing. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same adjusted for a sitting person. Fig. 3 is partly a front elevation and partly a sectional elevation, and Fig. 4 is a detail in plan View.
The permanent bench consists of the legs a, cross-bars b, and connecting-rod c, which may be made in any approved form, and constructed of suitable height to support the desk or table top d sufficiently low down for use by a person sitting in a chair.
On the center of the cross-bar b of each end of the frame I fix an upright standard, 6, having a slot, f, extending nearly the whole length, and also having a toothed bar, 9, attached to one side and ranging along the slot. These standards 6 rise about as high as the table or desk top is to be elevated, and extend through vertical openings of the same, for guides and supports to the said top in shifting up and down.
To the top of each post a, I pivot a curved arm, h, making a pair of said arms for each end of the table or desk, which overlap each other, and the said arms have a curved slot, 2'. The shaft j passes through all of said slots, said shaft extending from end to end of the desk or table, and also passing through the slots f of the vertical supports 6, and gearing at each end by a toothed pinion, k, with the toothed racks g on the standards e, so that with a crank applied to one end of the shaft the desk or table top may be raised or lowered, according as the shaft is turned one way or the other, and the pinions are made to run up or down the toothed racks, thereby carrying and swinging the curved arms h, on which the desktop rests. A hook-pawl, Z, is pivoted to the desk-top to drop into the notches of one of the pinions k, to hold the desk at any desired height. The pawl is to be raised out of the notches by hand when the desk is to be shifted. When the desk is raised to thehighest position, the top extends a little above the top of the standards e, so that it is desirable to cover the openings in the top for said standards in case the desk is to be used much in that position,
for which I have .provided the hinged covers m up through the openings.- The arms h are connected across the bench from end to end by stay-rods n, said rods connecting the pivoted ends of the two arms of the respective sides of the bench, so that the arms are more substantially fixed and the action of the arms is more uniform than it would be if not thus connected.
An important advantage of my improved desk constructed as above described is the facility with which the parts may be disconnected for packing away in small space, and for transportation, and the ease of assembling them again inoperative connection.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination of the curved, slotted, and jointed arms h, shaft j, and pinions 7a with the desk or table supporting bench, the top (1, and the vertical slotted standard 6, having toothed racks g, substantially as described.
2. The bench consisting of legs a, crossbars b, and connecting-rod 0, and having the curved slotted arms h pivoted to it, and the vertical slotted standards 6 attached to the cross-bars, in combination with the desk or table top d, and means, substantially as described, for shifting ,it and supporting it thereon at any desired height, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the supportingbench provided with standards e, of the table or desk top d, provided with vertical open- Too ings at each end, extending through the same, posts a, and the stay-rods n, in combination and formingrgnides for the said standards, and with the slotted standards c,'desk-t0p d, shaft 10 the covers an, hinged to the upper surface of j, pinions 7c, and the toothed bars 9, substansaid top, substantially as herein shown and tially as described.
5 described, wherebytheopenings may beclosed JACOB KLAR.
when the desk is raised to its highest posi- W'itnesses: tion, as set forth. JAMES H. Bmnss,
4. The slotted curved pivoted arms 71, the HENRY L. WIN'rEns.
