Description

(No Model.)
J. N. DODGE.
INHALER.
Patented Apr. 29,1884.
mlnesses: 1520 1 101,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES NAPOLEON noncn, or srnrnerrnnn, MASSACHUSETTS, n'ssrenon F ONE-HALF TO SOLOMON J. eonnon, OFSAME PLACE.
IINHALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 297,769, dated April 29, 1884-.
Application filed October 25, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, J AMEs NAPOLEON DODGE, of Springfield, Hampden county, State of Massachusett-s, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Inhalers, which is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an exterior view of my improved inhaler; Fig. 2, a front end view of the same; Fig. 3, a longitudinal cut section thereof Fig. 4, a side view of the absorbing conduit; Fig. 5, a rear end view of the inhaler.
This invention relates to that class of apparatus for administering anaesthetics in which the absorbent material is inclosed in a case, through which the patient is caused to inhale, a suitable reservoir being connected with such inclosing-case for supplying the anzestheticin regulated quantities to the confined absorbent I its cap-screw; R, the hinged cover; S, its securing catch-spring; T, the slide-frame that operates it; U, its push-pin.
Over and under each rib of conduit 0 flannel is wound in the form of a continuous strip, which leaves an open space, thedepth of a rib, between the upper'and under surfaces. WVithin this spaceI place a card of thin blotting-paper. The flannel and the paper form a simple, convenient, and most effective saturating apparatus, easily renovated at trifling cost. Feltanswers the purpose well; or any absorbent material may be used to take up the fluid and diffuse it over an extended surface, to retain and gradually impart its properties to the air contained in the inl1ali1'1g-case,which the patient is to breathe.
The action of my improved apparatus will be readily understood. Reservoir B is filled with the ether or other insensibility-producing agent, and its mouth lVI closed by cap N. Elevating the rear of reservoir B brings its pipe J within orifice K of case A, so that the fluid, escaping from the end of pipe J ,will be brought into immediate contact with the flannel encircling ribs I I of conduit 0,-0r whatever absorbent material is employed in the conduit as a surface-distributer. Tightening thumb-screw L secures reservoir 13 at any desired angle, to facilitate the escape of the anaesthetic, and opening air-inlet O by thumbscrew P promotes the flow, if necessary- If to regulate the admission of external air by.
openingand closing gate F by the little knob seen thereon in Fig. 2, and the inward aspiration of the patient will draw the desired influence from the saturated absorbent material on the ribs of conduit 0 by the natural action of the lungs.
If preferred, reservoir B may be dispensed with. Pressing push-pin U relieves, through slide-frame T, the catch of securing-spring S, and hinged cover R flies open, and the M1268- thetic agent may be dropped from a vial directly upon the absorbent material of conduit 0, and cover R closed.
Vhat I claim as my'invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, substantially as before set forth, with the case provided at one end with a flexible mouth-piece and at the opposite end withan adjustable air-gate, of the removable saturation-conduit, which consists of a ribbed cage and a strip of flannel wound back and forth across the cage around the ribs and the adjustable hinged anaesthetic-reservided with a drop-tube passing through a slot voir provided with a drop-tube. in said hinged cover of the case.
3. The anzeesthetic-reservoir provided with v I 4 a drop-tube and an adjustable vent-va1ve JAMES NAPOLEON DODGE 4. The eombination, substantially as before \Vitnesses: set forth, of the case containing the satum- CHAS. (J. SPELLMAN, tion-eonduit, the hinged cover thereof, and the A. H. G. LEWIS, adjustable hinged anmsthetic-reservoi1' pro- S. B. SPOONER.
