Be it known that I, JESSE W. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Pencil-Holder and Inhaler, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement 1n combined pencil holders and inhalers, and particularly to inhalers of the portable or pocket type containing a medlcament for the cure of catarrh and kindred ailments, or such other inhalant as may be desired; and it consists in the novel. and simple combination and construction of a pencil holder and inhaler, and in the new and novel arrangement and combination of its parts, as will hereinafter be more fully described and set forth.

The further object of my invention being to provide a convenient, simple and effective device which may be closed when used as a pencil holder and out of use as an inhaler, so as to prevent the evaporation of the volatile medicinal substance with which the device is charged, and which may be readily opened when desired to be used as an inhaler, so that when applied to the anterior nares for use, an inflow of medicated vapors will be caused.

With the foregoing objects in View, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal view of the inhaler, the same being in closed position; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l, but, with the parts in position to be used as an inhaler; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the medicated cylinder and plunger attached thereto; and Fig. 4 is a View partly in elevation and partly in section, showing a modified form of medication.

A, represents an ordinary pencil, slidably secured on the end of which is provided a tubular barrel 1, forming the holder; the barrel may be made from any suitable material, but preferably of metal; and is provided with an opening 2, in the upper end thereof. Within the wall of the barrel, lo-

additional opening 3. barrel a predetermined distance from the upper end portion, by frictional contact with the inner walls thereof, is a cylinder 4, made from any suitable absorbent material, but preferably of paper pulp, adapted to absorb and retain a medicament.

Secured within the cylinder and reciprocable thereof, is provided a rod 5, on the ends of which are provided disks 6 and 7 respectively, the disk 7 having a packing 8, made from any suitable material, such as a piece of felt, secured thereon, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.

My device is operated as follows: As shown in Fig. 1, the barrel 1 performs the functions of an ordinary pencil holder, the use of which being so well known to those skilled in the art to which it appertains, as to demand no further explanation here. As shown in Fig. 1, the pencil A, is inserted within the barrel 1 a predetermined distance, engaging with the disk 6, on the lower end of the rod 5, thereby forcing the rod upward, and causing the disk 7 on the upper end thereof to close the opening 2 in the end of the barrel, the packing 8 on the disk 7 serving to insure a tight closure. At the same time the pencil A, being extended past the opening 3 in the barrel serves to close the said opening, thereby sealing the barrel and preventing the evaporation of the medicament of which the cylinder may be either composed or sup lied.

When it is deslred to use the device as an inhaler, the pencil A is withdrawn from the barrel 1 past the opening 3, the pencil at 'the same time disengaging the disk 6, causing the rod 5 to descend, and release the disk 7, from the opening 2 in the barrel, as shown in Fig. 2, and when in this position the medicated vapors from the cylinder will flow through the opening 2 in the barrel, the inhaler now belng open and ready for use.

In Fig. 1, I have shown a modified form of cvlinder, indicated 9, the cylinder in this instance being composed of a medicament, some medicaments owing to their solidity being capable of being formed into a cylinder suitable for this purpose, while others owing to their insolidity, are not capable of such formation.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

An article of the character described, comprising a barrel having an opening at one end coextensive in diameter with the interior diameter of said barrel, having a reduced opening at its other end, and having an opening in its side intermediate its length, a cylinder secured within said barrel between said reduced and side openings,

a rod reciprocable within said cylinder, disks on the ends of said rod one of which is adapted to close said reduced opening in said barrel from the interior, and means removably inserted in the other end of said barrel and adapted to shift said rod by contact with its disk at that end to cause its other disk to close said reduced openin said means also adapted to cover and uncover the side opening in said barrel.
