IcUFF-l-IOLDER.`
SPIllCIIEICA'I'IONv forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,744, dated April 29, 1884.
Application tiled March 10,1884. (No model.)
To all w/wm/ t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMON D. BISHOP, of West Hampton, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cuff-Attaching Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a device of novel constructionfor attaching and adjusting cuffs to shirt-sleeves, which, while cheap, simple, and efficient, admits of being` easily manufactured, so as to present a neat or ornamental appearance, and provides for both quick and ready manipulation, substantially as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gurcs.
Figure l represents a side view of the attaching device applied. to a shirt-sleeve, shown in part, and a cuff in part section.. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section upon a larger scale of said cuff-attaching device, on the line xa" in Fig. 3; and Fig. a face view of the same.
AB indicate two'thin strips or pieces of spring metal, each constructed at their Opposite ends to iformconcave jaws a b, brought to an edge at their points 'of contact-that is, thejaws c of .one strip with the jaws b of the other strip. The one or outer Strip, A, is `of corrugated shape on its face intermediately of its jaws a a, forming swells or protuberancesv c c on opposite sides of its center, where it is united with the other strip, B, at its center. A simple manner of thus uniting the strips is to construct the strip B at its center with side wings or projections, that, when turned overupon the other strip, A, from opposite sides thereof, will form clips d d to hold the two Strips together. The dotted lines in Fig. 3 showthe clip projections before they are bent over. Said strips may, however, be riveted or otherwise united at their centers, and with or without the clips may be readily They may considerably vary in shape or design, according to the pattern or style required. Both strips should be of Suitable stiffness or strength, and the outer Strip, A, be properly tempered lto l retain its bent shape, and to return to that shape when released from pressure, and its spring-be strong enough to hold the sleeve and cuff between its jaws aa and the jawsb b of the strip B, but so as to be easily opened by pressure applied to either of its swells or protuberances c c. Pressure on either of 'the swells o causes the depressed portion e of the strip A at a point beyond the swell to impinge or bear on the strip B, thereby opening the two jaws a b next adjacent to the swell, and allowing of the cuff C or shirt-sleeve D to be gripped between said jaws.
The device may be attached to the sleeve at different points, thus adj ustingthe cuff to any desired distance below the edge of the coatsleeve. It maybe applied almost instantaneously, and does away with the troublesome operation of buttoning the cuff, when stiff, to the shirt-sleeve, and soiling or creasing it.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A device for attaching and adjusting cuffs to shirt-sleeves, composed of two spring-metal strips orpieces forined'with meeting jaws at their opposite ends, and united intermediately of their length, and constructed to open at either of said ends on pressure being applied to bring the strips together between such ends andl the point of attachment of the Strips, Substantially as specified.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the cuff attaching and adjusting device, consisting of a corrugated spring-metal strip, A, having opposite end concave jaws, aa, with swells or protuberances c c between said jaws, and a spring-metal strip, B, having like concave jaws, 0,17, at its opposite ends, and united with the strip A between the protuberances c c, essentially as described.
The spring-metal strip B, havingjaws b b at its opposite ends, and constructed with central side wings, forming clips d d, in combination with the corrugated spring-metal strip A, having jaws c a at its reverse ends, sub` stantially as Shown and described.
