AUGER HANDLE.
N0. 296,873. Patented Apr. 15, 1884.
WITNESSES. 1 I
UNITED STATES PATENT @Fricn.
DAVID M. PARRY; or n sHvILLn, INDIANA.
AUGER-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,873, dated April 15, 1884. Application filed February 15, 1884. No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID M. PARRY, of the town of Bushville, county of Bush, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auger-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention consists in an improved construction of that class of adjustable augerhandles wherein the auger-shank is clamped in its socket by screwing the two parts of the handle togethenas will be hereinafter more fully described. 1
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is an elevation of an anger I on the dotted line 2 z, and Fig. 3 a horizontel section of the same on the dotted line y y. In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the auger; B, the main portion of the handle; B, thepart wherein is the nut, and (l the sleeve which surrounds the inner ends of the two parts where they come together.
The anger or hit A is of any ordinary construction and needs no special description. The handle, when together, is of any desired size, and is not dissimilar in appearance from ordinary auger-handles. The main part B is preferably a little more than one-half of the handle, and has the socket for the augershank. A clamp-bolt, B is set in an aper ture in ,the handle, it being secured to the part B by a rivet, b, which passes through a longitudinal slot, b, in its end. Said bolt is enlarged, and provided with a hole in its center for the admission of the auger-shank, said hole being arranged so as to register with the socket in the handle. Its other end is screwthreaded and adapted to screw into a nut set in the part B of the handle. The part B has a longitudinal hole in the end which abuts against the part B for the admission of the screwthreaded end of the clamp-bolt B. A nut, b", is set in this hole, with which said screw-threaded portionengages, as before described. The sleeve 0 surrounds the center of the handle, appropriate holes being formed in the under and top sides thereof, which form a part of the socket for the auger-shank. It is secured to the part B by the rivet b, which passes entirely through the handle. It is fit ted to the end of the part B loosely, thus per mitting said part to be turned therein, in order to allow the adjustment of the clamp, as will be presently described.
My improved handle is operated is follows: The several parts being in position for use, the shank of the anger is inserted in the socket in the handle, passing through the hole in the center of the clamp-bolt. The part B of the handle is then screwed up tightly against the part B,which operates to draw back the clamp bolt and clamp the auger-shank firmly between the side of the socket next the part B and the side of the hole in the clamp-bolt next the part B. This makes a very handy and durable handle, and one which can be applied to any anger, as before described.
vHaving thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An auger-handle constructed in two parts, having an aperture formed in its center, one
of said parts having a clamp-bolt adjustably secured in its portion of said aperture, and the other of said parts having a nut set in its portion which engages with ascrew-threaded end of said clamp-bolt, whereby the same is oper' ated, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
2. In an auger-handle, the combination of the part B, having a socket for the admission of the auger-shank, the clamp-bolt B adj ustae bly secured in said part B, and provided with a hole in, its center, which forms a part of the socket for the auger-shank, the part B, having a nut, If, set therein, which engages with a screw-threaded end ofthe clamp-bolt, and the sleeve 0, surrounding the center of the handle, substantially as described, and for the
