SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,536, dated April 8, 1884.

Application filed March 3, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Jesse A. GRANDALL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby dcclarc that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the let'- ters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front View of my improved toy. Fig. 2 isaback view, showing the clacker and its gravitating arm. Fig. 3 is an edge view. Fig. l is a section looking forward, the disk being removed.

This invention is a toy; and it consists in the combination of a rotary disk with a clacker, with or without a figure on the outside of the disk, as will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.

A d signates a disk, which is applied on a spindle, A having a handle, A, so that it rotates freely. On the back of this disk is secured abatten, to which is applied a pulley, a, which has a belt reversed and passed around another pulley, c. This pulley a is keyed rigidly on the spindle A and it is flanged to prevent the belt from running off. On this spindle I also key a ratchet-whceLC, which is between the bifurcated ends of a loaded arm, B, to which is applied a wooden or metal spring, B. This loaded bifurcated arm and the spring, together with the ratchet-wheel,

constitute the clacker, or what has been termed a watchmans' rattle. The shaft 9 of the lower pinion-wheel extends through the disk A, and has keyed to it a short crank-arm,

I contemplate applying any figure to the face of the disk. For instance, I show in my drawings the figure of a man in a cart driving an animal. The man has in one hand the rein, and in the other handa whip. Now, I desire to have the arms and legs of the man vibrate,

also move, representing a man driving a team on the face of the disk.

The wagon I and a thill, together with the body I of the man and the body 1 of the beast, are made of one piece of wood or other suitable material. The arms J of the man articulate about the pivot j, and the lower legs articulate about the pivot Both legs of the man are made of one piece. The legs, arms, and the head of the man, and also the head of the horse and its legs and tail, vibrate synchronously. This is effected by the following connecting-rods, all of which are clearly shown in Fig. t: The rod Ii-connects the head to the body, the rod It connects the body with the posterior partof arm of the man, the rod R connects the said arm with the legs, the

. rods S S connect the legs with the fence, and

the rod Si connects the fence with the pivoted head of the beast.

It will thus be seen that by simply rotating the clacker the several parts of the figure are put in motion, representing a man driving a horse on a race-track.

It is obvious that any other automaton may be substituted for the figure herein described.

The disk A may be actuated by a spiral spring applied on the spindle of the handle A. which spring would be inclosed in a case and provided with a key-postto be wound up at pleasure.

It is obvious that when a spring is employed the clacker may be dispensed with, or both may be used on the same toy.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

I 1. The combination of a clacker having a disk applied on the spindle and an automaton on the face of the disk, substantially as described.
